Me and my partner stayed here after a trip to York to see a friend.
We paid £100 for the room and breakfast, which we thought was pretty reasonable, given it’s only 15 minutes from the centre of York.
The hotel grounds are beautiful, there’s a large car park, and the pub next door is very handy for food or a quick drink.

Check in was easy, and the room was nice enough. Clean and tidy and with plenty of amenities, such as tea and coffee, free biscuits, hair dryer and ironing board.
The rooms were also really quiet - I didn’t hear a peep from any other guests or staff, despite being near a door to reception, so that was good.

We actually ate at the pub next door, The Fat Abbot, which was lovely and would highly recommend for dinner. But we did have breakfast at the hotel, which was very nice. Served in a lovely room with old pictures of York and with plenty to choose from, including full English, plus continental and things like soya milk.

We didn’t have time to use the gym or spa, as it was a short stay, but both looked lovely and the gym seemed larger than most hotel gyms. The spa also seemed well equipped and had Elemis options.

Overall, a lovely stay if you’re looking for a hotel outside of the city, and/or enjoy a spa break.

We booked a 2 night stay not knowing what to expect, upon arrival we were greeted at the reception by a pleasant young lady who was very helpful.
Our room was very big and spacious, but a bit cold as the heater works on a key card system.
I asked at reception and they gave us a spare card which we left in all the time of our visit.
The breakfast was possible one of the best I have ever had.
We asked at reception about going into York and we were advised to take the local bus into york as the bus stop was just outside the hotel gates, the bus takes you right into city centre and only cost £6 for an all day pass(adult).
We used the spa facilities and the pool and 4 steam rooms were were a nice plus.
We will be returning soon and would highly recommend to anybody to try.

Visited for 2 nights in February. Hotel is standard, not 4 * but adequate. All the staff in hotel and spa were excellent, friendly and helpful. Hotel bedrooms in desperate need of updating as are most parts of both hotel and spa. I think the spa is very disappointing. The treatment rooms are on a noisy corridor with phones ringing, people shouting/laughing so it makes it difficult to completely relax.
The main part of the spa (swimming pool) is noisy and busy with not enough sun beds, no chance of quietly relaxing.
There is a broken shower in the changing rooms which was reported several times and the lift in the hotel is still broken.
The spa uses plastic cups for water and there doesn’t seem to be any way to recycle these. The whole place needs a complete overhaul. They could start by replacing the awful plastic flowers with some real ones.

This is the third time me and my husband have visited, we stayed overnight and visited the spa and the fat abbot pub at the side of the hotel.

We really love the spa, it was so relaxing and we both had a massage which was lovely. All the staff were really lovely, everywhere was really clean, nice spa and gym facilities. I relaly like the pool area with the loungers and the view, magazines are provided by the spa and it's just such a nice calm relaxing atmosphere.

The hotel itself is lovely, I love the old Victorian building and surroundings. There are a few different areas to sit in, all nice and relaxing. They do bar snacks mostly sandwiches and platters from the hotel, however we didn't visit the hotel restaurant which do evening meals. All the staff we saw were really nice and helpful. The buffet breakfast was nice and you could also order items such as pancakes from the menu and have them cooked fresh.

The only real negative point about the hotel is the rooms, they are rather dated and could do with some work on them. We've stayed in alot cheaper hotels with much nicer rooms. However the bathroom was obviously brand new in our room and it really stood out compared to the room, it was lovely and had elemis products. I found the bed quite uncomfortable, however my husband thought it was comfy, not your usual hotel quality pillows unfortunately and the duvet was rarher thin. Luckily there was a heater in the room. Rooms also had a hairdeyer and ironing board with iron.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, paid £150 for the room which is the most i think we have paid here, will most likely come again though as the spa makes it worthwhile.

We had an absolute superb time, food excellent, accommodation excellent and Staff extremely helpful. We decided to book a superior room and for only £20 per night extra it was certainly worth the money. The only thing I would have changed was the quiz night, think a tribute band would have been better, the live music on Boxing Day evening was excellent. Thank you for a super Christmas. Mel T.

My partner and I was quite disappointed with this stay - our first time to York. We felt it wasn’t worth £125 a night.

Upon arrival we were greeted by quite a cold and unwelcoming receptionist. None of the facilities were explained to us upon checking in i.e. swimming pool/spa. I feel these facilities should be explained and we shouldn’t need to ‘ask’.

We arrived roughly 15 mins before check in time because we were travelling. We were told our room hadn’t been cleaned yet and so was directed to the outside patio where someone would come and offer coffee/tea. No-one came and offered this. We noticed that there was only 1 waiter dealing with a number of ‘afternoon teas’ and we presumed from the receptionist that this was the waiter to ask us about refreshments. This waiter was doing a great job and we could see she was stressed with having to serve so many people - we felt quite sorry for her. On the other hand, the scenery was fantastic.

When we checked in after the 15 minutes we were handed our key and directed in the location of the room. Upon entering the room we felt it was very dated, basic and, the bathroom lights were faulty. However, the beds were comfortable. We didn’t bother with breakfast as £20 per person, per day was a bit expensive and from what we read it wasn’t worth it. We didn’t eat at the pub next door so we can’t comment on this.

We really enjoyed our visit to York but we wouldn’t be staying here again nor would we recommend it.

We have just returned from a one night stay celebrating our anniversary, overall we were impressed with the hotel - lovely grounds, nice size double room with good facilities thanks to ‘Donna’ that left her Netflix logged in on the tv ;), we had a double room with breakfast included. Was impressed with the choice at breakfast we had a lovely fry up. We both had a lovely neck & shoulder massage at the spa, one of the best massages I’d had at a spa. Pool was lovely, we managed to get a lounger each but some guests struggled to find anywhere to sit & relax. My only niggle was we wasn’t offered a towel at the spa and I was only given a robe, towel, slippers when I said my treatment was booked for that evening (my boyfriends wasn’t until the next day) when I went back and asked for a towel for him as we was sharing one towel the lady said I’d have to pay £1.50 :/ didn’t really like that as everyone else around us had a towel each, I doubt they all had to pay £1.50 a towel if they were not having a treatment.

After a 4 day tandem bike ride of 150miles plus this hotel completely took us by surprise! From booking the room with Katie who gave us a professional service including booking our dinner reservation ( which was hand as it was full by the time we checked in!) Natalia who was professional reception and was very helpful. Finally Janet who was our restaurant host as well as in charge of housekeeping made sure we had a fantastic stay ( especially as we were celebrating my partners birthday). Just want to thank all the staff who were all fantastic. Great spacious rooms and fantastic spa facilities. I definite one to revisit again in the future! Well done 👍 12/10 Nila &Jeff The Tan Travellers

The room was over the Restaurant The Fat Abbott. It was modern, cold, no heating was on and the piped music from the restaurant could be heard throughout the room.
We were given another room which was clean if rather tired. In the morning there was no water at all as it appears there was a burst water main nearby. I requested a refund as clearly this was not ideal but was informed there could be no refund. No mention was made of offering to supply a bottle of water to at least wash and do our teeth. We left immediately not even stopping for a cup of tea.

On first sight it looks splendid and that it is going to be as excellent as star rating suggests.
Car park a short walk from reception, but an unloading area would be useful - raining and car park dark, puddles and slippery leaf debris everywhere. Some lights enroute to reception not working. Reception very swift but lacking information and greeting.
Room in new annex area a long walk from reception with 2cases.
The room is very modern and quite spacious. But the bathroom door can’t close - wood expanded?
The next door room speaking and showering clearly audible even though they are not talking loudly.
The alleged restaurant isn’t open but linked adjacent is the Fat Abbot for lunch and dinner, however in 8 nights we could only get 2 dinner bookings!
Nearest restaurant is Thai and closed until Wednesday so evening meals mean driving miles!
The room servicing is a bit hit and miss.
Staff at breakfast are helpful and friendly but not wearing face coverings. Some staff were young. Not much sign of COvid awareness - we wore face coverings to walk into breakfast area but not many did and no request to do so. All so much more lacking in COvid awareness than in Norfolk.
Reception sanitizer is empty!
Not worth the cost. Will not go again.
