We've just had the most amazing meal at The Horseshoe. Perfectly cooked by superchef Craig, who has great imagination and clearly values the best ingredients. Not silly prices either and the staff are super. Love the decor and open fires as well!

This is the first time our dog Cleo has enjoyed a hotel stay as much as us. The Horseshoe Hotel is a great little find for those wanting to take their dogs to hotels. It’s definitely rustic but that’s what gives it the charm..and the friendly staff! The room was clean and the bed super comfy - we loved the cheese, bread and traybake treats. We didn’t have an evening meal but spent a great evening in the bar chatting to other guests and Craig. We loved his dogs, especially Fern. 🐶 It was all decorated for Christmas which, with the log fire, made it feel like we were in the middle of The Holiday film 🎥 Thank you for making us all feel so welcome 🤗 and we will definitely be back.

The Horseshoe is a lovely country pub in the Esk valley. Location is fantastic, especially if you like walking and is well run and offers a good standard of accommodation. You have to appreciate that it is a pub steeped in history and that the bedrooms will have some quirky elements. The evening meal was excellent with some superb cheeses on offer as a dessert. Have been looking forward to staying there for some time and we weren't disappointed.

My wife and I stayed here during November 2023. First impressions were the welcome was a bit muted, the rooms were upstairs and we were asked to follow a young man to our room, no offer to carry a bag, just let us struggle, both in our 60s, my wife fell over a small step with her case going upstairs and hurt her knee. The lad just stood and watched and still didn’t help. The room was small and looked nothing like the photos on trip advisor. It was a gloomy room even with the lights on. First impressions were not good. The coffee machine was filthy, the shower head was black with dirt and the shower tiles were also filthy. The tap for the sink was loose and the toilet flush button was missing. There was also so dubious wiring connections on the heated towel rail. I went to the owner and asked when the room was last cleaned, apparently everyday, I exclaimed “Really”. Never had that room had a proper clean in weeks. The bed was so soft it was like a bouncy castle, only two of the four pillows had pillow protectors, the bed did have a mattress protector. The bar was very cosy with a roaring fire and some excellent ales. Breakfasts and evening meals were, I must say, excellent. Be warned. We purchased this stay using a Buy a gift voucher, be warned, it cost more than booking direct.

Room Tip: Don’t bother. Abrupt unfriendly owners, no pleasantries, dirty rooms.

Stayed over for 1 night whilst spending a couple of days in Whitby. Very rural location, I would imagine it is very picturesque in Spring/Summer, on the Riverside and with beer gardens and farm shop. Hotel is very rustic, great room, cheese and cake in room was a great touch. Bar is superb, friendly, good beer, open fire. Evening meal was really good, we had venison and beef, big portions. Breakfast was superb, worth going back just for the breakfast. Would definitely stay again.

Stayed for 2 nights ( Thursday & Friday ). Welcomed by Simon on arrival and given room5 ( overlook stream) room1 ( overlook drive , front beer garden. Rooms are double but small. Have tv and kettle. Staff , Sharon, Tony & Craig, hospitable and keen to help. Breakfasts , filling and tasty. Eve meals a varied menu and dishes full of flavour - take your pick pork, lamb, venison & more. The bar area cosy and open fire is a cosy feature. Car park secure. Egton Bridge is very rural, and we did enjoy the stay. Clean & an area to explore. Much enjoyed. Thank you all.

Another fantastic stay! We stayed last year, in the deluxe suite, and booked again. Unfortunately this place gets booked up quickly, and our usual suite was already booked. We opted for the double with ensuite, room 3. We arrived Friday afternoon, unfortunately in a heavy down pour🌧 we were greeted by a lovely roaring log fire, in the bar, and craig offered to help us,with our many bags (whitby goth weekend). We were checked in promptly. The room was smaller than our deluxe, but perfectly cosy and adequate, once things were put away! Room 3 has the chimney breast wall running through, so was lovely and cosy. The room has tea/ coffee facilities, more can be obtained by asking at the bar :-), a little welcome snack tray, consisting of bread, cheese, and this time for roll slices (last year was scones), tv, ensuite bathroom bath/ shower, complimentary toiletries. The bed was very comfy, and I never sleep well normally, but I did. Breakfast was delicious as always, both mornings we both had the full english, and fruit or cereal from the self service continental. I'm coeliac and require gluten free, however as previous, this wasn't an issue. My breakfast was cooked separately, and only the black pudding and sausage wasn't gluten free. My only niggles were: *The bathroom, could do with a little corner shelf, as i had nowhere to put my makeup bag/ toiletry bag. *The bedroom has one bedside table, on the left side, I am a right side sleeper. Unfortunately as a glasses wearer, I had to take chance with them on the floor😬. A little flip down self or some would've being useful ). As I say, only little inconvenience, but We love staying here so much, that we've booked for next year, however in our deluxe suite. Thanks for another great stay, and wonderful hospitality Craig 🌟

A lovely stay in a lovely little pub! I am slightly late writing this review but we enjoyed our stay immensely so happy to write one. We chose this hotel as we were booking a trip to Whitby, although the distance to Whitby itself requires a drive but we knew this prior to our stay. First impressions were good; the pub is lovely inside and has a rustic feel with some modern touches which we liked. We met the owner, Craig, quite early on and he and all the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed a drink or two in one of the reception rooms on arrival and the wines were pleasantly surprising for a pub. Needless to say we enjoyed the bar a little too much during our three nights there! The food was fantastic at The Horseshoe and we travel and eat out a lot but we would say this is some of the best (if not the best) pub food we’ve eaten. The evening meal was definitely more restaurant standard than pub meal, in our opinion. The breakfast was lovely too and there were plenty of options ranging from a delightful full English or more continental style food in which you helped yourself from a buffet style set up. They also allow dogs in all parts of the pub which is nice as a lot of places claim to be dog friendly but are quite restrictive. We had our two dogs with us and we always felt welcomed by the staff with them…even though one of the dogs has a hatred for most people! Our room was small and I recall a conversation with Craig in which he told us we had the smallest room in the hotel but we did book quite late. It was a squeeze with luggage, two dogs and dog beds/bowls (both of which were provided) but we accept that we were staying at a pub with rooms and not The Ritz. If I was being picky the furniture and bathroom could do with a modern upgrade but we literally did just sleep and shower in the room so could live with it. When we stay again - which we will - we will make sure to book a bigger room. The farm shop was fab and we bought plenty of pastry laden goodies for our trip home and we loved the outdoor bar area but the time of year we visited meant it wasn’t open. We would love to come back in the summer months and enjoy it and a pizza from the outdoor pizza oven. We were there three nights/four days in total and had a fantastic stay. I’m really surprised at some of the reviews of The Horseshoe and think people need to be realistic; it is a pub with rooms so does not have the advantage of ample space which can be sound proofed against people enjoying themselves in the bar or a busy kitchen. If that is what you want then go to a big hotel where you are miles away from anything but other hotel rooms. Cleanliness wasn’t an issue for us at all and we were actually sad to go apart from the fact that our waistlines would have probably forgiven us for going! We will definitely come back, this time with our new baby, and apologies to Craig for taking so long to review the hotel. The Durhams (plus Dougie and Skittle the doggos)
