Detailed Reviews
Our golf trip to the Lancashire towards the end of October was cancelled at very late notice due to Covid. We decided to visit Norfolk instead and having booked rounds of golf at several north Norfolk venues were in need of a suitable hotel to use as a base. A number of the hotels in the area were either already fully booked or very expensive. With a little trepidation and rather at the last minute, we decided to try the Kings Head Country Hotel in Great Bircham. We need not have worried, as the hotel far exceeded our expectations.
Traditional looking from the front, the hotel has a large modern extension to the rear. The common rooms; reception, bar and dining room are modern, light, airy and stylishly decorated. There are around ten bedrooms, most of which appear to be located upstairs. Our room was again pleasantly decorated and furnished with a large comfortable bed and plenty of wardrobe space.
We ate in the restaurant for two nights. As you might expect in a small hotel, the menu was unchanged from night to night, but offered a surprisingly wide and interesting selection of starters, mains and desserts. Our meals were excellent; tasty, good portion sizes and very good value for money. There was also a comprehensive wine list, again at reasonable prices. Residents at the Kings Head also receive a breakfast. As well as the ubiquitous ‘full English’ there were a number of more interesting and unusual offerings available. Due to the Covid environment this was table served, although that is probably the case under normal circumstances. For all our meals the service was prompt and friendly.
We had a very enjoyable stay at the Kings Head. It is in a great location only a few miles from Hunstanton. The staff at the hotel could not have been more friendly, welcoming and helpful. For a hotel of this quality, it represented extremely good value. Tip – try booking direct, rather than going through a booking agency as you might find you can get a better deal.
This is a well-priced, well-run, stylish hotel in a great location in north Norfolk and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Check in was simple and straightforward with all the covid requirements covered. Our room 10 overlooked the car park and fields beyond, it was generously sized with an extra large bed, soft chairs, desk and dressing table. We spent a pleasant time in the very comfortable bar waiting for a friend to arrive for dinner. The menu is varied with I'm sure somethig for everyone. The scallops to start were plump, cooked perfectly and served on a crackling base with sauce - most enjoyable. Main course duck again cooked perfectly with crispy skin accompanied by fresh vegetablesand sauce. Breakfast, the menu was wide ranging with something for everybody's taste. The egs royale were superb and can be thoroughly recommended as can the English breakfast with quality sausage and real bacon. The village store over the road prvides papaers and has a wide range of produce as well as being the local coffee shop.
Great Bircham is a perfect base for visits to North Norfolk and the Kings Head highly thought of.

We went for Afternoon Tea at The King’s Head, Bircham, Norfolk this afternoon to celebrate my husbands 74th birthday. The staff were very welcoming and friendly serving up a delicious afternoon tea.
There was a minor issue in that I had ordered the afternoon tea with Prosecco, expecting a glass of Prosecco with our afternoon tea. The young man brought a bottle of Prosecco in an ice bucket and left it at the table so I assumed rather than a glass of wine the bottle was included in the package. I was unprepared and surprised at this as my husband will not drink more than one small glass of anything when he is driving. However as it was left at the table I didn’t want to waste it so continued drinking it over a 2 hour period. When it came to paying the balance, 50% deposit on booking which I have no concern about at all, the lady apologised explaining the lad who served us was new and should have only poured 1 glass of wine rather that left the bottle at the table. Hence the bill was £14.95 higher than expected. The experience was so different, for us, and immensely pleasant that I am not really complaining BUT it would have been nice if when the lads error had been noticed we had been told. TBH I struggled to finish the bottle but thinking we had paid for it within the agreed price I wasn’t going to leave it on the table.
Never the less we highly recommend afternoon tea here, but if they leave the bottle on the table don’t be tempted to drink it, and we will be returning. The food is excellent and the surroundings arevvery pleasant. My husband rated his birthday treat as 20/10 so all in all a lovely afternoon thank you.

We decided to do a staycation walking holiday and wanted nice hotels rather than apartments. One of the hotels we chose was the Kings Head Country Hotel even though it was more expensive than others in the area. I wanted to book an evening meal and tried to contact them the day before arriving but was difficult to get in hold of them, I called many times as well as emailing and finally received a call back at 9.30pm.
The informed us they do not clean rooms every day, we had read their COVID policy before booking and those facts were not included. We were paying a lot for 2 nights stay in a hotel that was not cleaning the rooms every day, not what we would have booked if we had known and they were not willing to acknowledge the inaccurate advertising on their website or the Pre-arrival email they sent us before our stay that again did not mention the lack of cleaning. As they were not willing to refund the booking we did stay at the hotel, had to ask for a change of towels/toiletries ourselves and had to go up to our room to find the cleaner to provide them. The hotel is on a B road but used by HGVs which we could hear in our room, as well as the person who was snoring in the next room. The hotel had no atmosphere in the evenings, the only good part was the breakfast was fine. All in all, overpriced for what they provided.

+1
We recently spent four nights at this friendly hotel. Our deluxe room was large and equipped with everything needed to ensure a comfortable stay. The bathroom was also nice, especially the heated towel rail! We appreciated the daily replenishing of room and bathroom items, i.e. coffee, tea, shampoo etc. No problems with WiFi, worked efficiently. We had dinner in the bar each night as the food was very good. However, evidenced by a staff shortage, the service unfortunately was hit and miss. There was a lack of coordination in who did what, where and when! We frequently had a lengthy wait, either to order our meal or wait for it to make it to the table. Still, we were patient and the food both at dinner and breakfast was worth the wait. The staff work hard and are very friendly and polite which made our visit enjoyable. We travelled with our little dog and she was able to be with us for meals in the bar. All in all we enjoyed our visit and thank management and staff for making us feel welcome.

Faultless on arrival check in was smooth, personally shown upto room, (not just your rooms up the stairs, turn left walk to the endof the hallway etc etc). On walking into the room we were both blown away, simple but very very spacious and comfortable, we hadnt booked evening meal but they were easy able to accomodate.... if you like a drink prior or with your meal the bar is extensive (gin has three shelves alone). The menu has ample choice, but not so much that your lost for what to have, and the actual portion and food quality was impossible to fault, so good that we rather than looking elsewhere ate there all three nights - then breakfast ive spent much more £££ on hotels and the breakfasts have disapointed - not here, its not a get up and fumble for bowls etc... rather sit and order and the choice, quality and attentivness is not skipped.
overall i would highly recommend this hotel, Sandra the owner is on hand and with the support of her staff made our stay perfection.
Disliked · WIFI was present but not perfect - however this is likely due to being shared by many and villae location

Stayed for 3 nights at this hotel in a quaint little village .
Friendly staff , very clean and follows COVID regulations very very well !
Breakfast was great with a good selection of dishes I
Had 2 evening meals which were about the average price of the area . The Sunday beef roast was plentiful and cooked perfectly ! Highly recommended!
The home- made raspberry cheesecake was served in a glass and was delicious . However the chocolate brownie was a small portion with toffee ice - cream but I thought expensive at )£ 8.50 !
Overall we really enjoyed our stay and the staff made us feel most welcome and nothing was too much trouble .
Would recommend this hotel as it’s location is excellent to explore North Norfolk . Thank you to all staff at The Kings Head 😊

I wasn’t going to write a review & just put my awful experience down to bad luck, but seeing the response to my friends previous reviews I feel I need to, especially as the person responding from the hotel was not even there during our stay.
After a long day walking I had to have a cold shower. I get it, things break down but an apology wouldn’t go a miss.
We were asked to come down for dinner at 8:15pm and no earlier as we were a large party (of 7!), to go to the bar area (smart!) where our order would be taken. We arrived there on the dot (I was ravenous!) We took a corner table out of the way next to a lovely young couple who I said , oh no I think we’re about to spoil your quiet evening and they replied no problem, you’ll add some atmosphere!
We ordered cocktails & our food but not once did any member of staff suggest we were late (as implied later.)
The food was mediocre. The atmosphere was like an old peoples home (no offence, I love the elderly, & have relations in lovely homes but they’re quiet) If the 2 other tables thought we were noisy then that’s because there were 7 of us & we were trying to have fun on a Saturday night in a hotel. We were not swearing or drunk just happy to be together.
There was definitely only 3 choices, cheese, brownie & something else, I can’t remember it was so uninspiring. The brownie looked like a cow pat on a plate & according to the waiter it collapses under its own weight!
We were asked to go up our rooms by 11.30 as the hotel is not manned at night & the staff wanted to go home. Plus one of the rooms key didn’t work so it needed the master key held by the manager. It didn’t work, several of us tried it including the lad on duty who I seem to remember not being very surprised that it didn’t.
Breakfast was a disaster! I arrived at 8:30 on the dot and noted other tables had guests as well as our group because I thought I was late! We asked a few questions…sorry about that! If the kippers were fresh, if there was any fruit and yoghurt, if there was any marmalade?? The answers came back from the sweet but first timer waitress. No the kippers were frozen, yes to fruit & yoghurt but no to marmalade. We then waited a long long time for breakfast, so long we felt we had to say. The manageress was so rude I left without eating breakfast, I just had to get out of faulty towers. The staff were so stretched, even the cleaner was fed up she had been given the upstairs rooms. Bless her, she was over 60 & struggling.
As I said I wasn’t going to write the review but the response from the hotel is hostile, no apology and Sandra who has spoken with one of the group wasn’t even there during our stay.
If you are part of a group or want a bit of fun avoid.
If you’re a couple looking for quiet & query nothing it’ll be fine. Good luck.

Recently stayed two nights at this charming hotel. The rooms were spacious, well equipped and clean. A great breakfast is included and we had a tasty evening meal too. The hotel has an ideal location, in the country but within easy reach of the many North Norfolk attractions and beaches. The hotel has put in place many measures to make you feel safe and welcome at this time and all the staff are attentive and friendly. A lovely stay and would definitely recommend.

I really want this place to succeed as the general aura is one of helpfulness and well meaning.
They just need to up the game with attention to detail . The reception area is a bit lack lustre . A local person on the front desk and couldn’t tell me the best beaches !!
The room had issues . No bathroom radiator and the TV was wobbly in the wall. The remote needed new batteries , the bath filled up when showering . If you want to advertise Deluxe rooms , they have to be just that . The room was quiet and the bed comfy so all good there .
The food was very good. Especially the Brancaster mussels !! But again little glitches . Had to ask for salt and pepper . The table needed wiping before putting down cutlery . The waiting staff need to be able to answer customer questions with confidence.
The decor is actually quite bland, an injection of colour would be nice. Bit silver and grey. But that’s my opinion.
Being dog friendly was a great advantage to us.
These comments aren’t made with malice. Only with intention of making constructive criticism .
Good luck the King’s Head.

I don't believe there is any accommodation on the ground floor.
If you are asking for disabled access purposes, there is good quality self-catering accommodation nearby at Church Farm Barns (Norfolk Disabled-friendly Cottages) only about 1 mile away
