Detailed Reviews
Having stayed at this hotel a few years ago we were looking forward to returning. Post Covid and with new owners it was not quite the same. We had booked a superior room, we were given room 9, but were surprised at how little space there was between the bed and the walls. The bath/shower required a young and athletic occupant as it was so high, it was not a safe design.
Their Covid practice was not to enter the room post guest arrival. This meant that the bed was not made, the towels were not replaced, the coffees etc were not replenished and the rubbish bins were not emptied. I did collect fresh towels from reception. Luckily this is not standard practice for other hotels we have recently visited where you could request staff did not enter your room if you wished.
The restaurant staff, although pleasant, were totally disorganised with either great delays in service or three people asking the same question within a few minutes.
The quality of the food was disappointing and not good value whereas it had been outstanding during our previous visit. This is all a pity as the building is attractive and well positioned.

Arrived for a 1 night stay on a Saturday afternoon at 1pm, no welcome on arrival just a lady sitting behind the desks who looked like she didn’t want to be there. Told her we wanted to check in to be told rooms won’t be ready until 2pm she pointed towards the bar area and said we could have a drink whilst we wait or come back at 2pm. She did show us to the bar.
We booked in for lunch during our stay, food and serve was really good, though some dishes on the menu are expensive for example supreme of chicken with vegetables & potatoes was £24!
Drink are also expensive, large white wine & a soda & lime was £11.
As I agree with previous reviews, the whole bar area dining room lacks atmosphere.
Bedrooms are dated but clean and have everything you need.
When we went down for breakfast we sat in the bar area as we thought that’s where breakfast was served, no one about to direct us, then a lady came over and said we could sit there but would make it easier for them if you went into the dining room, maybe someone should be greeting guests and showing them where to go. Breakfast was very nice.
Check out was the same lady who saw us for check in, no smile didn’t ask us how are stay was, just total lack of interest, we paid our bill and left.
£135 for a 1 night twin deluxe room- not sure what part of the room was deluxe,
I wouldn’t rush back

It seemed rather odd that we paid a 28% deposit when we booked 4 nights back in the spring and then even odder on arrival when were asked to pay the balance immediately. Two days before our stay when we had lost our cancellation rights, we had received a welcome email saying there was no lunch or dinner available for the duration of our stay, So we were paying hotel prices for a B&B, We were told they could book us a table at a brasserie they owned in Hunstanton called Chives Two days later we found ourselves driving through Hunstanton and Chives was closed that evening.
Our room was good so was the bathroom but climbing in and out of the bath was precarious because it was so steep sided. Housekeeping was poor. My bedside table was not dusted in four days, and bathroom toiletries were not replaced for three days until we expressly asked.
Breakfast was the highlight and truly excellent and the breakfast staff friendly and helpful, but it was sad and not a good thing to see one arguing in public over her hours.
We think the hotel is maybe going under or maybe they just have a lot of drive offs? They were expecting a wedding at the weekend and the garden was getting a quick makeover presumably they had booked outside caterers?

Response from The Kings Head Hotel, Other at The Kings Head Country Hotel

After reading your review just would like to mention we take the 1st night deposit and the remainder nights on arrival. There is a 48 hour cancellation policy prior to the day of arrival, with a complete refund. You are actually paying for purely bed and breakfast, lunch and dinner is not included within your stay. As you state in your review we could book you a table at our sister restaurant, we did not realise you would take yourselves without a booking. Moving on the baths, these were installed prior to us taking over the hotel, as for the housekeeping I am so sorry at the time of your stay we had two house keepers off with covid and obviously did not want them to come in with the virus and we needed to keep everybody safe. No the hotel is definitely not going under as you have stated and as for the garden it is always maintained and obviously having such intense hot weather we needed to water our lawns and borders. As you remarked using outside caterers for the wedding, we actually used our chefs from our sister restaurant. As you probably do not realise there is a great shortage of staff in the hospitality industry and rather than not serve good quality food we made the choice to close our kitchen temporarily.

Check in was easily carried out and we were fully advised of all precautions that had been taken to comply with the coronavirus situation.
Our room was small but very adequate for an overnight stay. The bed was extremely comfortable and the en-suite facilities were very good.
Excellent bar with a great selection of both beers, wine and a large choice of gins!
Dinner was also excellent from a varied but restricted menu but was beautifully prepared and cooked. Service was friendly and efficient.
All the staff and owner were a delight to chat to and made our stay very enjoyable.
A beautiful external courtyard and garden that was set off with subtle lighting making use very inviting.

our 2 night stay was brilliant from start to finish, huge car park, so no problem parking and getting luggage from car to hotel. check-in was smooth and hassle free, lovely friendly receptionist, we were shown to our room. we stayed in the deluxe room no 1, it was big and spacious with a huge comfortable bed, the bathroom was big and the shower hot and powerful. the first night we dined, choosing to eat in the bar, my husband chose the duck, i chose the sea bass, both were 1st class, cooked to perfection, for dessert my husband chose summer pudding, myself choosing the creme brulee, again perfect, we decided to share a cheeseboard to finish the meal, this too was superb, after returning to our room, we both slept very well, in the morning breakfast was served in a very professional manner, nothing too much for the staff, you can have copious refills, continually being asked if we needed anything more, the breakfast choice was staggering, my husband choosing the traditional english, myself the eggs royal, both were cooked to the highest standard, my poached eggs being on point, a signature of an excellent chef. we spent the rest of the day exploring norfolk, burnham market being a favourite and only 8 miles from the hotel. we returned and relaxed before heading down again for dinner this being as good as the first. the next morning we enjoyed another hearty breakfast before returning home. we cannot wait to return to this hidden little gem in norfolk, nothing to fault about this place, would recommend in a heartbeat.

Delightful to return to the Kings Head. Our 1st with Sandra and her Team at the helm.
Gives access to the best parts of North Norfolk. Norwich, UEA (My Alma Mater, '68-'71), Holt, Kings Lynn and Brancaster.
We booked for 4 nights (Room 2), but an extra day to catch Thornham Creek @ High Tide (it was too windy!) and another to avoid travelling thru Storm Eunice stretched our stay to 6 nights.
Kings Head probably best known for its superb cuisine. There is a Set Menu Monday to Thursday but A La Carte only Friday to Sunday. All excellent but the latter understandably more expensive.
Special mention should be made of the excellent Coffee (my blood has a high caffeine quota).
Lisa (Reception), Julie and the rest of Sandra's Team work extremely hard to make your stay most enjoyable.
Post Covid, balancing Staff with Bookings, can mean service on the slow side. But it's not done to hurry in Norfolk so sit back and enjoy it.
The complex, just 12 Rooms, is being gradually updated and refreshed.
If you are a light sleeper, avoid Room 2. The property was built in 1860 so some of the floorboards creak. In Room 2 they are exactly over the entrance to the Ensuite Loo. So any nighttime loo visits will wake your partner!
But the Bed, a King or Super King, is wide enough for 3 or 4 - not that we put it to the test!
We will be back.
"Thanks to Sandra and her hardworking Team"

We have just returned from our yearly visit to the Kings Head. As we expect from this hotel, the staff were fabulous. Shame Sandra was poorly, but Lisa and her team looked after us very well. They all deserve a big bonus for looking after everything so well during holidays and illness of other staff! In these times of extortionate inflation, prices have gone up, but frankly one can’t expect anything else as hotels are suffering with the rising costs of absolutely everything. We stayed in room 8 and our only criticism is the bed, it’s time for a new mattress as we both slept badly and ended up with back pain. The room could do with a lick of paint, but we know from our visit last year, that Sandra is in the throws of doing up the bedrooms. She did such a good job with the redecoration of the bar and restaurant, we look forward to seeing the bedrooms when they’re freshened up. Well done Kings Head for helping to make my birthday mini break special. Will also thanks you for providing his favourite Eggs Benedict each morning and his favourite Wherry ale! See you again soon. Geraldine Thompson 👏👏👏👏

We have just returned from a wonderful night stay. Booked in by a charming chap ( I guess the owner) who then showed us to room number 10. A spacious room overlooking the car park and fields beyond. A lovely view and very quiet. We quickly left our bags and retreated to the outside area where we were able to enjoy a glass Merlot and a nicely chilled Chardonnay in a sun trap of a courtyard area. There was also plenty of garden space.
We had a very enjoyable evening meal. Difficult to choose what to have as the menu had so much choice. The sword fish was delicious and so was the sea bass. There was a good ambience in the dining room. The waiters were very efficient, and made sure we were happy. Even The chef came out to see us all to make sure that we were all enjoying his food. Everyone was full of praise for him. Definitely an asset.
His breakfasts were amazing. So much choice again. Kippers , smoked salmon, scotch pancakes, full English etc . You name it. We enjoyed a long leisurely breakfast. Not rushed at all which was nice as it was raining.
The quality of the ingredients were top notch. The black pudding was 1st class. Sausages were really meaty and there was a good choice of eggs.
Tea, coffee and toast was plentiful, and readily replenished.
THE HOSTESS WAS AMAZING. She made sure that everyone was looked after. Nothing was too much trouble.
This was an amazing stay. We only wished we’d stayed longer.
Thank you

Looked forward to staying in this attractive looking hotel for out wedding anniversary, but on arrival we found it to be a soulless place, devoid of any kind of atmosphere. What was once obviously a lovely period building, had been turned into a boutique styled hotel. The room was large with a good view over the fields & a lovely seating area outside. The bed was large but had a grubby quilt cover on it covering a thin, cheap looking quilt. The cover was changed for us when we highlighted this. The dining room felt like a canteen, which was off putting. The food was at best average & over priced. Some of the staff were clearly inexperienced...which is the sign of the times, due to covid unfortunately. But the quality of the food was the hardest to swallow sadly. I asked for smoked salmon & scrambled eggs for breakfast. The egg was like rubber, which I am sure was cooked on a a greasy hot plate & burnt underneath, then placed on one slice of toast, for the oil to soak through to complete it's appeal. We ordered the chicken supreme for dinner the night before & was served a chicken Sunday roast, minus the Yorkshire pudding. The chicken was tough. We highlighted this to the waiter, but was met with an awkward smile & a sorry & that was it. Other complaints from other guests that night were evident, but we were unsure of exact details. Our trip to Salthouse & Sandringham church, were the saving grace from our weekend being ruined. We certainly won't be returning to the Kings Arms. It needs to up it's game.

I spent two nights 29/02 and 01/03 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
My room, there twelve luxurious rooms, was spacious, fine linen, olde worlde with a modern touch. Everywhere so clean and inviting.
Because of so few guests breakfast was a leisurely pleasant engagement with a great choice of fare. From the normal suspects, cereal, porridge, full scrumptious English breakfast to a vegetarian/vegan offering.
Apart from inviting food the other common thread running through the hotel was the staff.
From Lisa on reception, an absolute credit to Sandra and her high standards to Richard in the bar. While I name just two of the quiet professional and friendly staff I can say all staff are a fine example of Human Capital being a company's main assets.
Dinner was another great experience and I would suggest anyone staying at the Kings Head will wish to return, as I do.

I don't believe there is any accommodation on the ground floor.
If you are asking for disabled access purposes, there is good quality self-catering accommodation nearby at Church Farm Barns (Norfolk Disabled-friendly Cottages) only about 1 mile away
