We stayed for a night so we were local to visit The Raby Hunt for dinner and booked the Lord Gainsford Suite for my husbands birthday. The hotel is lovely, the room was fabulous and I had treatments at the spa which were very nice too. Breakfast was good. A great location for this visiting the Raby Hunt restaurant - beware the taxi service was 15 mins late and cost £30 return for a 5 min trip!

The best spa treatments I've had bar none, and I've had a few in most north east spa's. A special mention must go to Lyndsey (therapist) an absolute miracle worker! I found the pool a little small but nonetheless perfectly formed. I imagine it could get a rather crowded when its busy but fortunately it was pretty quite while I was there. If you are sampling the spa facilities be sure to bring flip flops and a pound coin for the locker both of which caught me unawares. I had lunch in the brasserie and while nice the choices were rather limited. That said I couldn't fault what I had. I also stayed the night (spa Snuggler break) and before booking into my room realised I had forgotten my phone charger. I mentioned this to the gentlemen who showed me to my room and he came back soon afterwards with a charger in hand - top marks from me. I have to say I found this level of customer service was a theme which was repeated through Headlam which is a credit to them. My lunch in the main Hall that night was excellent too. This was my first stay but it definitely won't be my last.

This hotel is outstanding on every level. The staff go out of their way to help wherever possible. We had two cocker spaniels staying with us and they treated so well. Allowing us to eat outside in the sun terrace, bringing a fan to the room as it was so hot in the evening, never complaining at my whim of grey goose vodka with 3 lime wedges served on the side with soda water. Everything was first class our favourite to date, in fact it will be hard to beat! Thank you for making our stay special.

To celebrate my daughter's birthday four of us went to Headlam Hall Hotel for three nights, just half an hours drive from our home.
We had not been to The Hall before, but it looked good on their web site. We were not disappointed. Arriving about an hour before check in time we expected to wait in the lounge with a coffee - but we checked in and were shown to out rooms straight away. A good start.
The dinner that evening was really superb, the chef seems to specialize in fish dishes which were as good a fish as I have ever tasted. My wife, daughter and Daughter in law each agreed with me saying how good all the food was. The starters were varied and the desserts excellent. Everything, including the bread rolls were home made and beautifully fresh. My compliments go to the Chef and his staff. I found all the staff, waiters, barmen, cleaners et al to be extremely attentive, friendly and efficient.
Our room was up one flight of stairs from the lounge and was very comfortable with a bath, shower and large wash basin and a supply of top quality soap, shampoo, body lotion and shower gel. also on hand were flip-flops, bath robes and large bath towels.
The hotel's setting is very good, with nice little walks around the grounds, tennis courts and 9 hole golf course complete the break.
My three female guests enjoyed a spa experience, and remarked that it was top quality.
My only downside was the wine list, which appeared to be excellent wine, but closer to the top end of the market and consequently a bit on the expensive side,
and as my three fellow guests do not partake of alcohol a bit too much to pay for just me. Not a complaint, but an observation. Also no lift was a surprise.
All in all and excellent place to unwind and spend a few days living a life of luxury.

We absolutely love this place! Our first visit was in July, and this was our second visit (and it certainly won’t be our last). Previously we had stayed in a room in the main hall which was beautiful. Spacious and well-equipped, with the most wonderful large bathroom. This time though we requested one of the Mews Cottages (we were in Willow). The main reason was that you can wake up in the middle of the night (as I often do – I’m old!) and sit on the bench outside your door with a cuppa and a cigarette and just admire the beauty that surrounds you. I know, smoking is dreadful, but when you get to my age it’s nice to be able to do what you want to do! Despite being smaller, the cottage was perfect for us. The most comfortable bed ever, lovely Molton Brown toiletries, a bath (with a shower over), tea, coffee, iron etc. Fabulous. The Covid situation means that at the moment rooms aren’t serviced daily as they would otherwise be, but that is no problem. You only have to ask for new towels, or tea/coffee supplies, and they are there.
What I love most about Headlam Hall is the ‘away from everything’ feeling you get as soon as you drive through the gates. It really is a special place, and a taste of luxury for us normal folk. The grounds are absolutely stunning, and the buildings are beautiful. There are lots of interesting places to visit nearby - Barnard Castle is wonderful for a trip out, the Bowes Museum etc - but all I want to do when I’m there is forget the normal stresses and strains of everyday life and just chill. My partner always has a session in the spa, but I prefer to find a lovely place where I can just sit and read a good book amid beautiful surroundings. It is heaven.
The food is fabulous, and what I look forward to most is walking into the dining room in the evening to be greeted with relaxing tinkly music, and candles on every table. I’m talking new candles every night! How special is that?
The owners are lovely too, and very approachable and friendly. On our last visit in July I suggested that there should be a covered ashtray on one of the outside tables so that smokers would know it was OK to smoke there (I spent a bit of time picking up other people’s butts from the floor and putting them in the nearest bin, I’m like that). Lo and behold – there’s now a covered ashtray on the table, and Mr Robinson (Jr) even remembered it was me who requested it. His mum and dad are equally friendly, and the bonus of each of our visits has been meeting one or other of them and having a little chat. If Hector is with them it makes it even better. You can’t miss Hector – the most gorgeous little dog you’ve ever seen. All in all, just a wonderful experience which I hope will be repeated very soon.

We had a lovely few days celebrating my birthday here. It was our first visit, having been recommended here by a couple friends. We stayed in one of the spa balcony rooms- quiet, comfortable bed, and directly above the spa, which made it easy for us to access the facilities and our treatments. As someone else mentioned, they do not clean the rooms daily because of covid but you can request this if needed, or additional toiletries etc. Water pressure in the shower could be a little better but manageable.

Our spa treatments were excellent and although the spa is on the smaller side, was still relaxing.

We had the breakfast and dinner package. Food was superb on all days and service was generally good. The main host on the evening was very welcoming and charming. The service was a bit slow at breakfast on our last day because of a wedding party staying there but nonetheless, was still fine. (Speaking of, there were weddings on every night of our stay! But didn’t really hear any noise from our room or in the main hall).

Grounds are beautiful and tranquil. A great place to get away from it all.

I would definitely return.

We’ve just checked out of Headlam Hall following a long weekend stay using the ‘Winter Escape’ offer. Everything on this offer was value for money and we can’t wait to return.

Everything from arriving on the grounds and being showed around the site to our room, the food, the staff and the rooms were just amazing!

I do however have to say I don’t think the photos of the rooms online do this place justice, the rooms are so big and contemporary or traditional if staying in the main hall.

All of Headlams facilities on site are top notch, with Molton brown washing facilities and hand sanitisers through out.

We hope to come back soon and check out some of the other rooms.

Went for a birthday treat and was a brilliant choice!
The massage was very relaxing and I felt comfortable immediately with the masseuse, the spa facilities were fabulous, however the hot tub and the steam room were out of action, which made the spa a little restricting, we understand this is not their fault due to a leaky pipe but I wouldn’t have booked if I knew this. We stayed in a spa room, the bed was very comfy and very spacious with lovely soft sheets. The room was super clean and quiet as it was above the spa and not in the main hotel area.
The food is amazing, very well presented and very tasty too! Service was fabulous, staff are friendly and were very helpful. Had a fabulous walk around the beautiful grounds before we left. We will be returning.

On arrival an older lady checked us in, was the worst check in I have ever had, a few grunts, sign here, your rooms not ready even though we had arrived after 4pm, their check in time, no apology and so that was it. Saw her later with an elderly couple, terrible not even a word to them, felt really sorry for them. Check out was not much better, felt really uncomfortable the whole time. Cleaning staff not friendly not even a hello when you pass them. The breakfast was not very varied and unfortunately quite unpleasant due to a cleanliness issue. In general, the place was not very clean, plates etc were often dirty, room was not so clean with a lot of dust, dead insects, dirty window, kettle filthy etc.
My mother was put in the Lilac room in the Mews, on the ground floor, at first she really liked the style of the room and the great bathroom but when we returned in the evening there was a terrible sewage smell in the bathroom which spread to the bedroom. It really was impossible to stay and could be potentially dangerous, we went to the reception and they changed the room immediately to a more basic room, which took forever to get to. No discount was offered or much apology. This room should be repaired before being offered to paying guests, as I am sure they know about this serious problem.
It is a nice place and very relaxing, the spa is small but very pleasant as well as the spa staff being friendly. A nice cafe too and beautiful gardens.
It could be improved if they trained their staff to be polite and friendly and cleaned a bit more.

Responded 27 Aug 2021
We are sorry to hear of these problems during your recent stay. We have had no issues with smells in these rooms and it is certainly not something that we are aware of and have had no other comments from guests. We will, however, investigate this to see if there is an issue and will address your other points.

The hotel and spa are well run, relaxing and friendly. We have used the hotel, restaurant & spa several times over the years and we always experience the same high standards .
We were in a Spa room for the first time- we were upgraded to a suite which was great-and really enjoyed it.
It was bitterly cold but sunny weather for part of our stay, & using the outdoor hot tub & terrace was fun!

I’m not sure best to check direct with the hotel. They are intending, I was told, that refurbishment was planned and this may well be the case for January 2020.

Headlam is not an obvious choice as a base for visiting the coast. It will take approx 45 minutes to get to the coast and longer if you want to go further north or south.

There is no dress code as such but the food and service is very nice and having eaten there many times I would suggest smart casual. If you want something more relaxed book a table in the bar. You can get the same food but my wife I find it more comfortable
