The Grade 1 listed Chilston Park offers one of the most exclusive hotels in Kent. Set back from tree-lined lanes, the manor house at Chilston Park Hotel in Kent is set in 22 acres of parkland and features a two AA rosette restaurant. One of the most best loved hotels in Kent, over the years Chilston Park has been a home to eminent politicians, writers, Lords and Viscounts. Today it is a classic British country house hotel with plenty of style and charm and one of the most perfect wedding or leisure destinations in Kent. But perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this 4 AA red star hotels in Kent are the antiques and history that surround it. The hotel has many interesting artefacts that date as far back as the 17th century manor house.

While many find the service to be attentive and professional, occasional delays have been noted. The hotel's cleanliness is a consistent high point, with its well-maintained and traditionally decorated grounds and buildings.

Detailed Reviews
This small luxurious hotel is a lovely place to stay. We visited in mid-week and this combined, presumably, with Covid meant the hotel was relatively quiet. The hotel boasts many original features and to stay here is to get a window on how it would have been to live in a country house in times gone by. The bar area, dining room and library all feature antiques, paintings and period furnishings. There is a more modern bar but this was not in use. We were upgraded to a lovely feature room overlooking the lake. The 4-poster bed was very comfortable and the bathroom luxurious. Breakfast is currently all table service, with nicely cooked items and good choices for vegetarians.
The hotel takes great care to ensure everyone's safety. Our temperature was checked every time we returned to the hotel, we had to wear masks in public areas, staff wore masks constantly and there was lots of sanitiser. Many soft furnishing, newspapers etc have been removed which makes sense, but loses a little of the finishing touches.
All of the staff we encountered were very professional, and my only minor quibble is that we could have been checked out with a little more warmth - "hope to see you again" would be the norm.
Lots of interesting things to do within about 30 minutes drive.

Dear SB01 Thank you for sharing your wonderful review of your recent stay at Chilston Park. I am particularly grateful for your very kind observations of the steps that we are taking to keep our guests safe and healthy during this period of Covid-19. All of our guests are very impressed with the measures that we take the second that you walk through the hotel entrance. We hope that you understand that taking the small touches out of our public areas is necessary and we really do look forward to the day when they can return and our valued guests and friends can once again all the splendors that Chilston Park has to offer. We very much look forward to being able to welcome you back. With kind regards and very best wishes Simon Barker General Manager

We had a lovely family afternoon tea at Chilston Park. We were looked after by Charlotte and Jack who made us feel incredibly welcome! With a baby in tow I was impressed with the safety standards for COVID-19 with a spotless baby change facility and masks worn in public areas, we felt very safe! We also met the head chef Adrian who was lovely- his cakes were brilliant! The little cheesecake and eclair were absolutely delish! The staff on the front desk were also incredibly warm and inviting and took our temperature on arrival, so impressed with the level of care taken. Overall we had such a lovely time at Chilston Park and I cannot wait to come again. Thank you!!

Lovely hotel, great setting. The staff were chatty without being intrusive. Due to COVID, temperatures were taken on arrival, sanitiser was readily available, the staff had masks on and the tables were well spaced. We felt safe. Thank you very much

It was a lot of money £26.50 each plus a compulsory tip, for not a great service and not very good food, the sandwiches were slapdash with not a lot of flavour and the cakes were dry, the little tarts were nice and the scones were delicious but the lack of loose leaf tea was a let down for my berry tea I was given a tea bag. We had to call people over every time we wanted something, we weren't offered any different teas or replenishments and weren't given a new plate once we had finished our savoury options or messy scones. There were a lot of little touches missing that make an afternoon tea special. The staff were all very friendly once you had their attention, and when they were in the room

Dear Marianneeve1992 Thank you for your review of afternoon tea. I am disappointed with the teams performance and have requested an immediate investigation into your experience. Our service charge is completely discretionary and this is stated on all bills, had you not wished to pay this charge, our team would have removed it, without question or hesitation. I have requested that our new operations manager takes this feedback and ensures that our usual high standards are fixed immediately. I am sorry that you had a less than stellar experience but please contact me directly so that we can ensure your next visit is a far better visit for you. With kind regards Simon Barker General Manager

We celebrated my birthday in the restaurant here last night with some friends. The first sight of this handsome hotel as you approach it with its elegant fountain and colourful hanging baskets is very impressive. Sadly, as soon as you step through the door that impression changes.
We met our friends in the rather shabby hotel lounge for a pre dinner drink. The service was slow at best and eventually we had to ask for the menus, as the time we had booked to dine had come and gone. We ordered a bottle of wine which we were then told ten minutes later was not in stock. The waiter suggested another one. We ordered that, but again after ten minutes, we were told that wasn’t in stock either. The waiter brought another wine suggestion with him which we agreed to, but when we asked if there was a difference in price, we were told it was about £20 more expensive! To be fair, the waiter did agree to give us it at the same price as the one we had originally ordered, but I wonder what would have happened had we not queried it.
We were shown to our table in the elegant restaurant and the food turned out to be delicious and plentiful. We did wait a long time between courses but we spent the time chatting with our friends so it wasn’t too much of a problem. However, there were very few diners in the restaurant so I dread to think what the service would have been like had it been full.
At the end of the meal my friend and I used the ladies loo. There was toilet paper on the floor of the cubicles, and the paintwork on the back of the toilet doors was decidedly grubby. The paper towels were so thin they tore as you tried to get them out the holder. Beside the entrance to the loo was a set of open shelves which had some folded linen and a haphazard pile of old baskets in full view. There was also a dishwasher basket full of glasses adorning the reception desk while some members of staff stood around idly chatting.
These points may seem trivial but they all serve to give the impression of a slapdash ethos to the hotel rather than the attention to detail which separates the mediocre from the excellent.
To add insult to injury, when we got home we realised that we’d been charged for 2 bottles of wine instead of one, bumping up the not insubstantial bill for a meal for four to £313. (The price of the extra bottle was refunded this morning)
We were disappointed, not just because our experience was bad, but because this could be a beautiful place to dine and stay if the management was tighter, the staff more motivated and there was more attention to the small things which matter.
The hotel is part of the ‘Handpicked’ group. This is not an example of a handpicked hotel!

I found this hotel by chance when searching online and would like to encourage others to visit. Firstly, the staff are so friendly and obviously happy working at the hotel. Tamara was particularly good, she was very efficient but also had time to stop and chat. A real
Asset to the hotel. The head chief also took the time to stop and speak to us which we really appreciated. The food was exceptional beautifully cooked and good sized portions. We particularly recommend the scallops, grilled chicken and steak which were perfectly cooked. Even the coffee was delicious. The hotel itself is full of character with themed rooms - we stayed in the oriental room with Japanese style decor. The lounge and central staircase and corridors were covered in antiques and artworks, it makes such a change from the corporate feel of most hotels. The are lovely grounds for a stroll and lots to do in the area. The Covid measures made us feel safe without being intrusive.

The Chilston Park hotel in Lenham is set in 22 acres of some of the most picturesque landscapes of rural Kent between Maidstone and Ashford. We enjoyed afternoon tea with champagne in a luxurious large room adjacent to the fine gardens. This was a romantic setting which I can highly recommend. Just imagine polished marbled floors, an enormous fireplace framed by a couple of oil paintings who stared out at the immense crystal chandelier suspended above comfortable sofas. It was if we had been transported to the private recess of our very own stately home. Jayden our waiter was excellent, he catered for our every whim, even to the point of sourcing and obtaining some oats milk at very short notice. Jayden kept the tea flowing and in a very discreet manner intermittently enquired if everything was to our satisfaction. Such was the dedication of the whole staff that we felt as truly valued customers. The high quality fare was delivered on the usual tiered platters, the porcelain was spotlessly clean and the champagne flutes sparkled to compliment a wondrous stream of golden bubbles of our champagne which tasted first class. This was followed by a stroll alongside the lake which was teeming with life, with fish leaping and ducks diving. The sound of trickling fountains and the gentle baas of the nearby sheep was almost hypnotic. In short this was more than afternoon tea, it was a veritable emotional experience, a memory to treasure which was worth every penny. The added plus is that being part of the Handpicked hotel group, it is also dog friendly so I will be inclined to return and book a room with our Border Collie so that he can sample these delights for himself too lol! Book up soon as spaces can be scarce.

This was our first visit to a 'Hand Picked Hotels' and it won't be our last. As we have been in lockdown for so long we treated ourselves to "the best room in the house", the Queen Anne Suite. What a fabulous room! Had an air of pure opulence, very comfortable four poster bed with feather pillows (though extremely high to get into, foot stools provided) dinning table and four chairs plus a two seat settee and two arm chairs with coffee table. What was outstanding was the service throughout our stay. Most of the restaurant staff were very young but they were well trained and all staff were happy to talk with you and what was very pleasing was they remembered your name and referred to you by name when booking in for meals.
The food was good and my only criticism would be that at the price we were paying I did not appreciate having to pay extra for side dishes as with some orders only one vegetable was included.

Property was near a nice village which had a fab seafood restaurant. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful.
Disliked · I feel I was missold this accommodation. It’s described as “luxury” this is not luxury! I failed to find anything luxurious about this place. I simply cannot understand how this is even categorised with this label! Arrived at the hotel and a sign states do not enter until attended, no one arrived so we walked in. Reception staff greeted us at the desk and gave us our key for the room. We booked the executive room. Rooms are very very basic with tired and worn out furniture. TV in the room is small and old and not even a SMART TV. The bathroom was spacious but very old fashioned. The shower wasn’t great and was over the bath. The bed was two single beds joined together so felt the join as we slept, might has well booked two single beds as we couldn’t sleep together. We was having our first weekend away having been locked down with the pandemic and decided to treat ourselves to a luxury weekend away, truly disappointed and feel I have been conned out of my money. Tried to complain and told the duty manager wasn’t available. Had we not travelled a fair distance to the hotel, i would have left straight away but we was tired from our day out and travelling so we had no option to stay. It ruined my mood and evening as I felt truly disappointed. We had drinks in the lounge area, again, this is very tired looking and worn. Dust on the items on display. We didn’t dine in as I wanted to spend as little time there as possible. We had breakfast and was left waiting 15 mins with no offer of a menu or offer of coffee, we had to ask staff to be served. The breakfast table was wobbly and reminded me of a see-saw as we each leaned on it, the other side went up. When I checked under the table cloth, it’s just basic plywood on a stand. Breakfast was nice but the whole stay was ruined and a waste of money.
Asked to speak to manager, told no one was available but they would call me. When I tried to call was advised manager working on nights so call back after 11pm as manager works from 11pm - 7:30pm. Very y helpful indeed.

We had the most wonderful stay at Chilston Park Hotel on Saturday 11/7/20.
It was so safe and clean and well organised that we had the most relaxing and wonderful weekend.
On arrival before entering the hotel our temperature was taken, hand sanitiser was outside for us too to use before entering the hotel.
We were warmly welcomed by reception staff and there were Perspex screens up for safety. We were shown to our room by the manager Mark who couldn’t do enough for us.
Our room was beautiful and very clean, remote controls were wrapped in cellophane etc.
It was very quiet at the hotel so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Mark looked after us beautifully the whole time. We had a glass of wine in the orangery before dinner and a walk around the hotel using the one way system.
We had a delicious 3 course dinner, all served to us by Mark.
The next morning we had the same lovely experience in the restaurant and enjoyed a beautifully cooked breakfast. We got to meet the chef (socially distanced) and thanked him personally .
We then enjoyed a stroll around the beautiful gardens at chilston park, it was the perfect end to a perfect night away.
I would highly recommend Chilston Park and will be revisiting with my children soon for lunch and a walk around the grounds. I will be bringing my nana here too for an afternoon tea.
If you’re thinking of visiting here go for it! It’s safe and clean and a lovely experience.

No pool or sauna unfortunately. Can't answer the query about meeting the management team as I don't work there however I have always found the staff very accommodating and friendly.
Dear Guest
All of the places that you wish to visit are semi-rural and thus there are no direct public transport links from Chilston Park to them. The village of Lenham is approximate 1.5 miles from the hotel and can easily be walked to. Harrietsham is slightly further afield and would be best travelled to via a local taxi which we can arrange here at the hotel, this journey will take around 10 minutes. Hawkhurst and Tenterden are further afield but could be reached by catching a train from Lenham station and changing at Ashford.
I hope this information helps.
Best wishes

Dear Guest
We are in an ideal location to visit each of these destinations, Tenterden would be furthest from Chilston Park at around thirty minutes traveling time by road.
Best wishes
