The Dog & Bear is in the lovely market town of Lenham, the accommodation has clearly been updated as everything in the room was spotless and well decorated, The bed was extremely comfortable although we had to ask for extra pillows but this was dealt with immediately by a very efficient lady on reception.
The bar area is very comfortableI but I must say it was extremely quiet throughout the hotel. Social distancing was properly observed and hand sanitisers were freely available all around the public areas. The 2 course meal in the evening was very good, we were taken care of by Chrissie in the restaurant area, she was very welcoming, helpful and obviously enjoyed her job.
The bar area closed at 9pm but this was not a problem as we finished our drinks in the charming little courtyard.
Breakfast was excellent although the pot of tea was lukewarm but drinkable.
All in all a lovely stay.

We are happy to give The Dog and Bear our highest recommendation, and our thanks for making our short stay so enjoyable.

The single room. is to be avoided at all costs. It was tiny, dirty, stuffy. The shower was dirty, the washbasin leaked water all over the floor - the entrance to the wing was filthy and worn. I paid £101.50 for this room for one night. This was daylight robbery! Fortunately, after complaining to the manager I was offered a superior double room, which was acceptable for the price, but did not compensate for a lost night's sleep in this disgusting single room.
Later I wrote to the managing director of Shepherd Neame hotels who agreed a refund of part of the cost.
The breakfast was inedible - I chose smoked salmon and scrambled egg - the egg was completely dry and inedible. The next day we had porridge which was sweet and runny.
We ate in the pub on Sunday night and had a very good meal in a pleasant atmosphere.
Just avoid booking a single room! And if you are a single person occupying a double room you will be charged for two breakfasts!!
We also clearly hit a very bad evening in the restaurant. We were not in a good position right beside a large family group with very young, "lively" children. We felt we were intruding on their private party. Several items on the already quite short menu were unavailable, apparently due to Covid-19 and being short-staffed. We waited an hour for the starter as the function had priority for food. The waitress did apologise for the wait and the staff seemed to be trying their best in a difficult situation. The steaks we had for the main course were good, however it wasn't the relaxing "gastro pub" dinner we had hoped for and the general atmosphere in the front room we found unpleasant. Having to leave early in the morning we were unfortunately unable to give the restaurant a second chance and sample the included breakfast. A pity, as reading other reviews it sounds good.

The rooms sizes were large enough for the 5 of us to sleep comfortably & they posted a couple of items I had left behind too.
All in all, the Dog & Bear was a great place to stay, eat & have a few beers. I could not fault them at all.
"Lots of parking at hotel. Big fluffy white bath sheets. Water, tea, coffee, chocolate and biscuits replaced each day. Restaurant food fabulous"Read full review
