Went up north to try an spot the orcas. Found this Bnb on trip advisor with glowing reviews and thought I’d give it a shot.

It’s set a a very quiet village of Mey. The hosts, Graeme and Eileen were everything that the reviews said they were. On arrival they made you feel very welcome to their home. I had booked a room at the back with the garden view. The room had a double and single bed in it. The room was clean and tidy and the hosts provide tea and coffee making facilities as well as a mini fridge stock with fresh milk.

They also ask you to complete a breakfast list, which is a wipeable a4 form. This allows you to let them know from the choices available what you would like and when.

The room has an en-suite consisting of a toilet, sink and shower unit but was more than adequate for my needs I’m 6’6” and quite wide so if I can easily fit into the shower then anyone can.

The bed was very comfortable and I had two nights of undisturbed sleep. Bliss

Eileen is in charge of the cooking and her fry ups were hot and delicious. Graeme is more front of house and will provide you with tips/local knowledge of the area.

This is a little gem of a guest house run by a lovely couple. I stayed for two nights and although there were other guests in the house you wouldn’t have known. It was all very quiet, relaxed and peaceful.

If your worried about COVID-19 don’t be in this Bnb. Everything in the dining area was disinfected and wiped down after each client had left the breakfast table. COVID rules were followed with ample hand sanitizers available to, and both guests and the owners wore face masks as required

If your up that way give this Bnb a shot, you won’t be disappointed. I know when I go back up that way this Bnb will be my first choice.

My wife and I decided to take a trip to the far North of Scotland for New Year. We wanted to try and glimpse the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) without having the expense of travelling to Iceland! Sadly, they Lights didn't show for us but that was the only down side of our trip. We stayed at the beautiful Hawthorns Bed & Breakfast in Mey. We arrived on 29th December and were greeted by the owners Graeme & Eilean. They showed us our room and told us they had upgraded us for free as we were the only guests booked in at this time. The room was spotless, comfortable, warm and welcoming. Bed was very comfortable and of a very good size. The en suite bathroom/wet room is large and well appointed. We had a very comfortable 4 nights stay in this B&B at a very reasonable price but what sets this B&B apart from others we have stayed in is the owners, Graeme & Eilean. They are both lovely people, showing a genuine interest in what we wanted to do & see while we were on holiday. They also provided fantastic breakfasts each morning from a fabulous multi choice menu. And whatever you choose it was cooked to perfection by Eilean. Also, they left the breakfast time up to us, we could state what time we wanted it! How good is that? Don't know whether that was because we were the only guests that week but even so, it shows how tuned to their guests the hosts are. There was nothing that was too much trouble for them, including giving us information on places to go and visit and even booking us in local restaurants for evening meals at their own cost! Graeme even taxi'd us to and from a local hotel on New Years Eve so that we could enjoy a few drinks that evening without worrying about driving. We just covered his fuel there and back. Talk about going above and beyond...
We had a super trip and saw some wonderful things while we were there but it is the hosts of the B&B that made the trip for us and if we ever went back to the area again for a stay we would certainly not look anywhere else other than The Hawthorns!
Thanks, Graeme & Eilean, you made a great holiday even more memorable!

Thank for your comments. It's great to know you had a good stay. We are always flexible on breakfast times for the guys with earlier ferries to catch or just those on holiday and in less of a rush. I just wish we could have arranged the Northern Lights for you.... Regards Eilean & Graeme

We stayed at The Hawthorns for 2 nights. Very rural, quiet and in a good position for getting around.
Aileen and Graeme welcomed us and explained about the Covid guidelines for their lovely B&B. They were not able to freshen up our room each day but emphasised that if we wanted new towels or more tea and coffee, then we only needed to ask. Nothing was a problem.
Our double room was a good size, comfortable bed, coffee machine, kettle , small fridge for fresh milk which was a nice touch. Lovely en suite with excellent shower.
We were asked to choose our breakfast the evening before from a good selection of items, we had Smoked Salmon with scrambled eggs which was delicious.
We would definitely stay here again when next in the area. Recommended.

The Hawthorns is a purpose built B&B with reasonable sized rooms and double glazed windows which make them snug and cosy. The bed was comy and we had two restful nights. The whole property is very neat, tidy and clean. The room had an en suite bathroom with a compact shower. The shower unit is Mira but has only a medium flow rate which is a pity. The batroom could do with a heated towl rail.
Graeme and Eilean are excellent weloming hosts and have recommended good quailty eating establishments in the local area.

Hi Thanks for your comment. Our Rowan and Hazel rooms have electric towel rails while the other rooms all have radiators in them. The shower heads are adjustable and normally give a pretty good flow, we will investigate. Regards Graeme & Eilean

After a rather long road trip my husband and I had the friendliest of welcomes. We were shown to our room which was just perfect with a picturesque view. Eilean and Graeme were extremely helpful with all aspects of our stay. We couldn't have chosen a better place to stay... 4 nights, 29th Dec til 2nd Jan. Eilean cooks the tastiest of breakfasts, her homemade bread is delicious and you can see that they care and are attentive to their guests needs. They even welcomed us to share a "wee dram" of whisky just after midnight /New year's eve. They have an abundance of knowledge of the area and gave us great information of the sights to see. We even got to see some seals because they told us where to look. I highly recommend this B&B to anyone who is looking for something homely, very clean and welcoming. Thank you Eilean and Graeme for just being you... First-class. Best wishes from Ann and Graham xx

I had such a wonderful stay with Eilean and Graeme. They made the stay feel safe (with regard to COVID regulations) and extremely comfortable. The breakfast was fantastic and they were both extremely friendly hosts and very helpful providing local knowledge on walks and where to spot seals! I would definitely stay at The Hawthorns BnB again and would highly recommend this BnB!

What a lovely B&B. Graeme and Eilean are so friendly and made me feel so welcome. The room was large and spacious with all the amenities you could ask for. Very clean, comfortable and great attention to detail. The mini fridge in the room was also a bonus for chilling the food I was carrying along the way. As a solo traveller, they made me feel comfortable straight away and also gave me some great advice for seal spotting, scenic roads, Northern Light spotting and fuel stops etc in the area. Also as a vegan, I don’t expect lodgings to always be able to accommodate this, which is absolutely fine, but they went out of their way to ensure I had a great cooked breakfast, dairy free yoghurt and had bought dairy free milk etc. They even left me three vegan snack/chocolate bars in my room instead of biscuits (the first B&B on my trip so far to consider this) which was great as I was able to take them with me on the next day of my journey. And they kindly allowed me to meet and have cuddles with their dogs Clova and Molly after breakfast, which was a great start to my day having lost my old lab last year. Would highly recommend this lovely B&B, it’s in a great location for Mey, Dunnet Head, Duncansby Stacks etc. By far the best B&B of my trip. Thank you!

Thanks for your lovely comments. We always try to have a selection for vegan , gluten free etc however as you mentioned this on booking ( ideal!) it was easy, thanks. The dogs, especially the lab, are always up for a cuddle especially as they are normally kept away from guests and were delighted to meet you too. Thanks again Eilean & Graeme ( Molly and Clova too)

Excellent b and b. Our room was very comfortable with great attention to detail eg fresh milk in little fridge and slippers provided. Good hot shower. Breakfast was terrific. Eilean and Graeme were very welcoming. Exceptionally dog friendly too! Very handy for the Orkney ferry and we were glad we had time to visit the lovely Castle of Mey, just down the road.

This was a warm and welcoming place to stay whilst travelling on the NC500. Rooms are a good size and give you everything you need for a few days stop or longer. Breakfast is provided in a separate dining room where the food is great and the owners are friendly and happy to chat and offer advice on places to eat or visit. The accommodation is accessed directly off the road but is orientated so that you get great views across the adjoining fields and woods - in our case it was the field of sheep! Would recommend this as a place to stop in this part of the Highlands with easy access to most places along this part of the north coast.

Graham and Eilean fitted in our booking with only 2 hours’ notice after we decided to leave another hotel not to our taste. Together with our little dog Jess we were given a warm welcome and a comfortable room with enormous windows looking out to the enormous Caithness skies. Great position for Castle of Mey (when it’s open) and John O’Groats. Hearty and delicious breakfast.

Hi Jenny. I wrote a review about the Hawthorns a few months ago and Trip Advisor sent me an email asking if I can answer your question. I can't but I thought it best to alert you that your travel details and home address were included in the question and I wonder if all the reviewers were also sent the same info. Am concerned this might be a security risk for you. I hope this is helpful. Alan Fletcher
