Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The welcome from the owners was superb. They went out of their way to ensure we had a fantastic experience - overnight it was very windy & everyone was checked on in the morning to see everything was OK. The scouts completed their Expedition Challenge and I’m sure we will be back for further challenge hikes. Many many thanks. 5th Heswall Scout Group.

Never been out camping where I was self sufficient before. Always had the backup of a touring caravan with family nearby so this was a bit of a risk for us to be fair! Had a great time though, site was great, well laid out, loads of space and facilities were spot on. Even had the use of a wood brazier of an evening which was superb to sit around after dark and would thoroughly recommend them to anyone who goes here. Loved it and will definitely be back again.

Absolutely lovely campsite.
Nothing is too much trouble for the lovely owner.
Facilities nice and clean ( we saw them being cleaned often)
Will definitely visit again
We took a camper van with bikes lots of lovely countryside to see and a bike track not too far away.

I usually don't bother writing reviews, but after the downright miserable experience at this campsite, I feel compelled to warn others—especially those who dare to actually have a bit of fun while camping.

We were a group of six, spread out over three pitches—just some dads and lads looking to enjoy a weekend outdoors. But boy, did Christine, the owner, have other ideas.

Let’s start with the positives. The site itself is clean, and the facilities are in decent shape. Plus, it’s only five minutes from One Planet, which is about the only thing going for this place.

Now, onto the negatives. The electric pitches are right along the front of the site, meaning the traffic noise is loud. But that was the least of our worries.

After spending a couple of hours setting up, we were still the only ones on our side of the field. The lads, being kids, decided to kick a football around. Within seconds, Christine swoops in like a hawk, telling us to move to the back field. Not ideal, since it’s uneven and littered with sheep poop, but fine, we moved. She also set a hard cutoff time of 8 PM for football. Right at 8, Christine shows up again—though she let us play for an extra 10 minutes.

As the night settled in, we gathered around the fire, cooking dinner and roasting marshmallows. But by 11 PM, Christine came over, clearly flustered, telling us we were too loud. We apologised and agreed not to add more fuel to the fire, letting it burn out.

Come 11:40, the fire was down to embers, and we were quietly chatting, trying to enjoy what was left of our evening. That’s when Christine stormed over, furious, and dumped an entire watering can of ice-cold water over the fire—and us—soaking everyone in the process. It was cold, and frankly, downright hostile. She claimed she had no other option after giving us "multiple chances." Excuse me? Dousing 12-year-old boys in freezing water on a cold night is your only option? Absolutely not.

We could have lost it right then, and honestly, maybe we should have, but we didn’t. We just packed it in, changed out of our soaked clothes, and went to bed, only to hear another group on the opposite side of the field being even louder than we ever were. Christine, of course, was nowhere to be seen.

The next morning, Christine half-heartedly apologised, admitting that soaking us might not have been the best move. She then told us that “this campsite probably isn’t for you” and that we should leave. After a heated exchange, she actually said, "It’s not for your kind." Disgraceful doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Finding a new site on such short notice was a nightmare, but we managed—except for one of our group who was so put off by the whole ordeal that they decided to just go home. Thanks to Christine, our lads and dads trip, something the kids had been looking forward to for a month, was utterly ruined.

So if you’re looking for a place where you’re treated like a nuisance for daring to enjoy yourself, by all means, book a stay here. Otherwise, steer well clear of Christine’s joyless little patch of land.

Response from Christine Hughes, Owner at Llyn Rhys Campsite
Responded 8 Sept 2024
I would like to think that I always do my best to accommodate and make everyone’s stay at Llyn Rhys Campsite a happy and pleasant one. On arrival, the 3 fathers and sons were made aware of how the campsite works, as I do with every small group that arrives. Unfortunately, the times when I expected the games to stop, be of no disturbance to others, and the fire to be extinguished by 11.30; at least a quarter of an hour after each time set, they had to be reminded to stop. All these few rules are stated in the Terms and Conditions that they agreed to when they made their booking. I offer fires as I feel it makes for a great camping experience but I do not go to bed until all the fires are out, it's imperative to make sure every fire is fully extinguished as the wind can easily reignite the fire and embers can land on anybody's tent and they would not be aware of it. At 11.45pm I could see they were not making any attempt to put their fire out or lessen the noise so I decided to put the fire out myself. It goes against my grain to have to be so firm, but I felt I was constantly being challenged. A splash of water was preferential to the possibility of having flying embers around the campsite. Next morning I suggested they find somewhere else to camp, and I would give them a refund to use for their second night. Initially they challenged me again and refused to leave but on my insistence, they left with their refund.

The campsite closed and cant get a refund. Tried numerous times on different contact platforms but being ignored. Very poor customer service! Even though a nearby event was also cancelled I would still have stayed but the campsite has been closed for the whole season.

Just returned from my third visit to this site within the last year, that says enough in itself but I’ll continue to write because this place and its’ owners deserve the due credit. If you like quiet and peaceful with no late noise, no overcrowding but still allows groups, fires and large pitches then this is your place. Lovely views, spectacularly clean site and amenities pristine 24/7! Christine is a wonder woman, nothing is too much for her and goes out of her way to make you welcome, chat and get to know you. Hope your daughters wedding is perfect! See you soon!

Stayed 2 nights in our motorhome with electric hook up. Lovely field with great views. Close to main road but the noise dies off at night with hardly any traffic. Toilet and shower facilities were spotless.
Very handy for Llandegla Forest which is 2 miles away. Would certainly stay again.

Had a wonderful weekend (despite the weather). Llyn Rhys Campsite is clean, tidy with plenty of space. If you enjoy simple camping, you can't go wrong using here as a base to explore the area!
The local pub is also good (for drinks, it was fully booked for food). I'll definitely book again.

Excellent campsite with lovely hosts Christine and Louis who are keen that everything is ok for you and good with local knowledge/advice.
Really pleased to have found and used this as a great base for 8 days on our charity Offa’s Dyke trek.
The campsite is well maintained. Facilities are clean and showers lovely and hot!
Very happy to recommend and, hopefully, return to!

How do I get to ruthin.
Answer from Christine H

Hello, So sorry for the very late reply, I have only just realised how to answer the ?'s. Ruthin is very easily accessed, if you are travelling by car, you take the A525 striaght there, which is 8 miles and takes approx 15 mins. There is also a bus every hour from the end of the road which takes approximately 20-25 mins.
