Craigengar Lodge was a brilliant find for my friend's hen party - it was the perfect combination of comfort and space for a group stay, with lots of essentials provided. G was incredibly helpful answering questions and making suggestions before our stay, and was on hand with any of our questions during the weekend of our visit. We would definitely recommend and stay again.

I have been staying at Orlege End for the past month, and it has been a delight. I've done a fair bit of traveling and holiday letting, and I can honestly say that Orlege End will be my top recommendation to friends and family from now on. Inside, the cottage is bright, spacious, spotlessly clean, and very well-equipped throughout—especially the kitchen—and very modern. Yet, it still manages to beautifully capture the charm and serenity of its surroundings. The underfloor heating has kept me toasty throughout some pretty stormy weather in the past couple of weeks! A huge part of this experience has been Geraldine's incredible hospitality. She strikes the perfect balance between being warmly welcoming and respecting my privacy. Getting to know her has been a joy, and she has ensured that my stay has been not just comfortable but truly memorable and special. I've loved it here and will definitely be booking again in the future.

Excellent stay with scenic views. The space is fantastic for a getaway or event with the space to host many people. 9 of us and two dogs stayed for my mums 50th birthday and it was perfect. Definitely recommend and hope to go back. The house was equipped with everything you would need and scenic walks are close by.

The worst experience of my life and it ruined our wedding. We informed Geraldine that the heating in the two largest bedrooms wasn't working on the first night, but she said we were the only ones to complain and that we were probably used to high temperatures. The main bedroom fell to 14 degrees during the night and two babies had to sleep in there. Well, they didn't sleep but it was our fault for "being too soft" on our children. She eventually admitted that previous guests must have broken the heating - she pins blame on anyone but herself - but claimed she couldn't get an electrician before we left, 4 days later. I ran an Airbnb business myself and had review scores of 4.9/5 across various platforms and over 2,000 reviews, so I know how hosting should be done. The 8 month old baby who was meant to sleep in the downstairs bedroom was forced to sleep in a shower room, as it was a bit warmer. There were cobwebs flowing from lightbulbs, many of which didn't work, and two of the four speakers in the ceiling don't work. There are many more things I could add, like a shower that didn't run hot. Upon leaving, I took issue with having to pay an extra £200 cash for guests staying one or two nights, but Geraldine refused to look at the photo of the thermostat at 14 degrees, insisting that we had left the place in a "mess" and that she had too much to do to get ready for the next check in. We followed instructions from a sheet she left, which said we should put waste in an outhouse but this was incorrect and Geraldine said "that sheet must be old". As such, we disregarded it, so failed to follow the instruction to strip beds, a task which would have taken five minutes. As an experienced host, I would have been extremely grateful if guests left the place as we did and that's assuming they were able to sleep and didn't have all the issues we did. A horrible experience and a thoroughly unpleasant host, who thinks broken heating isn't an issue because she was brought up with single glazing and no central heating (she is 82). Life expectancy has increased and cases of SIDS have decreased because of things like central heating. I have photographic evidence, as well as dozens of witnesses, so her response to this will be interesting. Are you going to blame us or claim I am lying, despite the evidence? I note from your other negative reviews that you blame your guests so let's see what you can conjure up in response to this.

Response from Geraldine Hamilton, Owner at Crosswoodhill Farm Holiday Cottages Near Edinburgh
Responded 3 days ago
I am really saddened that what should have been a 4 night memorably happy stay up at our large lodge has turned into, in the reviewer’s words, “the worst experience of his life and it ruined our wedding”. Marred by something that as host I could not have foreseen (the discovery on the day of their arrival of two faulty heat wall controls for the underfloor heating in 2 of the 5 bedrooms ), I acted promptly to address and rescue the situation by providing alternative heating. Prior to their arrival there had been a very happy collaboration between the bride-to-be and myself over the course of 44 email exchanges and 2 viewing visits from the time she first enquired about an intimate wedding ceremony in the house during a 4 night stay from Easter Monday. And hopefully she still appreciates all the help I willingly gave. Back in October she completed our booking form for 12 guests staying and up to a further 26 daytime guests on her wedding day. She paid the £1850 in advance for the 4 night rental for 12 guests and the amicable agreement was that she would pay, at the time of their stay, the £10 per person for any daytime guests over and above 18 when she knew numbers. On the Monday arrival date I went up to welcome them. As she was busy feeding their 9 month old twins I showed the groom round the house and highlighted a few useful things as I went round, including copies of pre-departure guidelines and the note attached to the 3 waste bins explaining about waste disposal, advice to stagger showers and how to avoid not triggering the smoke alarm (which they did ! ) . I decided against mentioning that they hadn’t asked about a dog staying ( which normally attracts a £20 pet fee) but was worried to see it jumping onto one of my luxury leather settees and that they did not have a dog basket with them but was assured this would not happen again. The atmosphere was relaxed and good. The next morning I received a friendly email from the groom, telling me “the rest of the house is amazing and the heating in the other bedrooms seems fine “ but alerting me to the fact that two of the bedrooms had been on the chilly side at 16 degrees for their 9 month old twins and they had moved to another of the rooms which they said they found too hot and cramped with the wooden cots taking up too much space ( they had chosen these in preference to the travel cots we also supply). He offered to collect a radiator from their house ( fairly close ) and I emailed back, apologised and tried to allay concerns with various suggestions and said I would take up an electric radiator I keep for emergency use . Which I did that morning. I checked the heating controls and felt they could have developed a fault earlier (the design is not guest friendly) but explained that special order online replacements would not arrive in time before they left on the Friday and it would need an electrician to fit them. It was perhaps a mistake to say that no previous guests had mentioned these 2 bedrooms as cool. The next day, Wednesday, was their wedding day and when I went up on the Thursday to collect loads of waste from the wedding the previous day, I met his Mum who said what a lovely wedding day they had had despite the rain. On departure day on the Friday I arrived up a couple of minutes before their scheduled 10 am departure time but was aware that the babies were still mid-feed. Change-over days can be a bit fraught with a deadline hovering to get everything ready and welcoming for the new group of guests arriving at 4 pm, so I headed for the bedrooms and was dismayed to find my pre-departure guidelines had not been followed, the first cot I saw had not been dismantled as promised and walking into the kitchen I realised it had been left in a messy state. And that I would need to ask my cleaning helper due to arrive any minute if she could spare me extra hours, which thankfully she could offer me. As the guests were about to head towards their car I reminded them they had not paid me the £200 owed for the 20 extra guests. The husband was quite rude, said he had an issue with paying it, but with the pressure on to get the house sorted in time for the next guests, I was reluctant to get into a discussion. He gave me the £200 folded notes from his pocket before getting into their car. Sadly tensions subsequently mounted and I have since received 8 emails from him, the first one saying “I was incensed by your decision to take the £200 after having us sleep in an igloo.” He has addressed me as “Nurse Ratched” and writes : “ The fact that you are a nurse astonishes and worries me” ( I am a staff nurse, though not the age of 82 he claims ) and “ Unless we can sort this out between ourselves, you will be taken to court and we will seek a full refund of all monies paid to you, as well as legal costs.” The tone of a flurry of his 8 emails since they left I found upsettingly belligerent with frequent talk of court action and reporting me to various authorities . I felt it was time to end the unpleasantness and I offered him a goodwill gesture of £100 which he refused and he then posted his displeasure on various review sites. Some of his grievances here I would question, but have already taken up too much of your time reading this. But perhaps worth mentioning that when I emailed the new guests to ask if they would like the heating controls replaced in the 2 bedrooms they emailed me back to say “Rooms are fine and everyone was happy with the temperature, in fact we turned down the heat in most rooms, so no need for the electrician.” And the two sets of guests that stayed in Craigengar just prior to the wedding party have posted wonderful reviews on Trip Advisor. Admittedly they did not have 9 month old twins who perhaps need a warmer bedroom. I feel sad that these parents have gone away with tarnished memories of what could so easily have been a cherished time at Craigengar.

We have just left The Wing after a 5 week stay whilst our house was being renovated after we unfortunately suffered a flood due to a burst pipe. The place exceeded our expectations and we loved every minute. The property was homely with loads of nick-nacks at every turn which I think people will find interesting! You really had a feeling of the traditional home whilst staying there! Of course we made good use of the wood burner fire place and roasted lots of marshmallows, had cosy nights in and played the vast collection of board games within the house. I stayed with my partner however we made good use of the ample space by hosting our friends and family who all absolutely loved the place too. G was so welcoming and warm to us especially since we had to arrived very last minute, late at night and in a bit of a guddle to say the least. She always made sure we were getting on ok and had everything we needed, whilst giving us our own space too. The wing was very well equipped and although we had brought some belongings we really didn’t need to bring a thing bar our own clothes and food. Thanks to G for a great stay- we are now home in new beautifully renovated house however made memories at the The Wing to last a lifetime.

Wonderful spacious home - a real find in the middle of beautiful countryside but only a short drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Stayed at Craigendar as a family get together - 3 families with a total of 12 guests - and everything we needed was there. Lovely open plan space for cooking, eating and relaxing in comfort. Extremely well equipped with home comforts as well as games, toys, books. Only wish we had come in warmer weather as the deck area offers fabulous outdoor space too. Thanks for letting us stay.

I almost always recognise guests who have been kind enough to post a review and email them directly to thank them. This is the heart-warming response I received from this kind guest: " You are very welcome. Lovely house. We’ve stayed in many so have a bit of experience with these things. Very happy to recommend - nobody will be disappointed if they come and stay with you. Thank you so much for letting us stay." I hope this explanation in my first sentence helps if viewers wonder why I don't tend to respond to reviews.

We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend G’s Orlege! We stayed as two couples (and a small dog) over new years and it was a very comfortable stay. The accommodation is larger than expected and was super peaceful and quiet in a beautiful location. It is within very easy reach of Edinburgh and takes only about a 30min drive. G was very friendly and helpful and set everything up and also gave recommendations for going into Edinburgh. There is also lots of information about what to do for pretty much anything in the house that you may need which we found helpful.
