Another great week at Buxa Chalets - our 5th. As ever high quality, thoughtful decorated, well equipped accommodation with brilliant views of Hoy and Stromess at a very reasonable price which includes an on-site laundrette, BBQ area with equipment and outdoor games and play area. It even has an EV charger. Kathy’s welcome hamper includes wine, cheese, oatcakes, Orkney fudge and more. It’s very family friendly and comfortable.

Travelling from Stromness we found the chalet easy to find and Kathy was there to meet us and show us round the chalet, laundry room and outside. The welcome pack of Orkney goodies and bottle of wine was a lovely touch plus everything we needed was provided. The lodge was very warm when the sun was shining so we didn’t need the heating on, the bathroom radiator is very hot personally I loved, water pressure is good for the shower and bath. Plenty of storage and towels provided in the bathroom. The beds were comfortable and plenty of space provided for clothing.
The main attraction are the views over Hoy Sound and Scapa Flow plus Stromness, we were obsessed with the beautiful sunsets and the ever changing views over to Hoy. My husband loved the wildlife, male and female hen harriers, hares and the short eared owl which put in an appearance most evenings.
The only issue we encountered was sound proofing between the chalet and the laundry room but it wouldn’t put us off booking again.

Dear Jacqueline Thank you so much for your wonderful review! It was a pleasure to welcome you to Buxa Farm Chalets, and I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay. I'm glad the welcome pack and Orkney goodies were a nice touch, and that the chalet had everything you needed to feel comfortable. The views over Hoy Sound and Scapa Flow really are something special, and it’s lovely to hear how much you both enjoyed the sunsets and the local wildlife – especially the visits from the short-eared owl! I appreciate your feedback about the soundproofing between the chalet and the laundry room. We'll certainly take that into consideration to ensure that all future stays are as comfortable as possible. We look forward to welcoming you back for another visit in the future! Warm regards, Kathy Bichan Buxa Farm Chalets & Croft House

This is an excellent place to stay. We had two couples and enjoyed two fabulous evenings there. The sunsets are breath taking from the cottage set next to the sea.

We had the "Croft", which is fully remodeled, up to date, with a full kitchen with laundry.

The three bedrooms were spotless and the kitchen well stocked with dishes, pans, and utensils.

Look at the video that Kathy has out there on the web. It will give you a sense of the property.

Other than the small chalets next door, there is no one around you when you're there. It is very quiet and peaceful. An excellent retreat.

When I come back to Orkney, this is the place I'll return with friends.

Our third stay at Buxa Farm Chalet was as wonderful as ever. The location is perfect for easy access by car to anywhere connected to the Mainland, plus there is ferry service just minutes away. I continue to be amazed at how thoughtful the owners are in providing the amenities and information resources that made our stay smooth, comfortable and totally stress-free. Delighted to find there are more kitchen gadgets than in my own home and the shower water pressure was fabulous. Views from the windows and patio were absolutely magnificent and ever changing. Kathy was exceptionally responsive from initial inquiry, to accommodating us when our flight plans were unexpectedly changed, to responding to a message during our stay, to providing great info on current happenings in Orkney. The chalet and grounds were exceptionally clean and everything worked as intended including WiFi Added bonus is that we were pleased to find the game of Scrabble on hand as we traveled very light. I highly recommend Buxa Farm Chalet and hope to return again in future years. Thank you Kathy and Keith!

Wow, we love when our return visitors notice our attempts to constantly improve things to enhance their stay. We upgraded our Wifi a few years ago and it makes such a difference for our visitors as they can now watch Netflix on their devices, play online games and upload all those gorgeous photos of Orkney during their stay. Thank you for visiting us again and hope to see you next year!

This was our second trip to Buxa Farm Chalets. The chalet was, as before, very comfortable and the hosts were as friendly and welcoming as ever. The chalets are in a beautiful location, very close to the coast and facing across the sea to the spectacular scenery of the island of Hoy. The most special aspect of the chalets, in my view, are their full length windows which allow visitors to appreciate the lovely scenery and the local wildlife. During this visit we were delighted to see a pod of orca just offshore from the chalets and a short eared owl regularly hunted in an adjacent field. If you are planning a trip to Orkney, which, I think, is a special place, Buxa Farm makes a great base for a visit.

The location of the Lodges is amazing, the views spectacular. Even though the weather was poor during my stay, the ambiance of this magical location was wonderful. A short walk to the water’s edge to bird watch or take a bracing dip, incredible views across the water to Hoy etc and equidistant from Stromness and Kirkwall.
The Lodge is very well equipped, well insulated against the driving wind and rain that I experienced and a lot of thought has gone into all aspects of this top notch retreat.
Being well off the main road, the peace and tranquility adds to the overall experience and I would recommend Buxa as a first rate choice for a very enjoyable stay.

Wow, thank you for such a complimentary review despite the horrible weather you experienced! The weather you endured due to Storm Gerritt affected all of the UK and caused quite a lot of damage. Thankfully, not to our properties. We are delighted that you have chosen to book again this summer and I am sure you will have an even more enjoyable experience with better weather!

Our 3rd stay at Buxa and 13th holiday on Orkney, and yet every time we are just blown away by the beauty of the islands, and of the view from Buxa, which in our opinion is the best on Orkney.
We were a family of 4 staying in the 3rd Chalet for 3 weeks. The beds are extremely comfortable, and the Chalets well appointed- the large fridge and freezer are particularly useful for a long stay, and the dishwasher was a luxury we are not used to at home. The attached laundry room is really useful- clothes dry overnight on the airer, so although there are tumbledriers provided, we didn’t need to use them.
Little touches like the books and dvds supplied being different from those in our previous visit to the same chalet, show the level of attention to the guests comfort during their stay. Kathy was always available should there be any issues, and greets all guests in person.
Definitely pack some binoculars, as the wildlife spotted from the chalet is fantastic. We regularly saw hen harriers, hares and a multitude of seabirds, but also spotted a short eared owl, and some harbour porpoises.
We enjoyed some fabulous walks straight from the chalet, the children loved all the outside space for kite-flying, and also the swings and golf/croquet provided. We hired some bikes from nearby Stromness, and new for us this year was a trip out with sea kayak 59degreesnorth, which we highly recommend.
We couldn’t imagine a more perfect base for an Orkney holiday, and are already booked for next year.

I don't get folks staying three weeks very often but you surely found plenty to do! I loved watching the kids flying their kites one day- wide open space and nothing to get entangled in. Keith and I must try the sea kayaking too so we can recommend to our visitors. ! Some of our visitors visit the RSPB reserves and comment that they see more wildlife right outside the sliding glass doors at Buxa. We are so thankful our short eared owl is back after a few years absence. Thank you for your lovely review and we look forward to welcoming you back again next year!

Buxa chalets were perfect for our 3-person stay on Orkney for a New Year break. Rye beds/bedrooms are really comfortable, the kitchen has everything anyone could ask for, and the sitting area has incredible views over to Hoy. We didn’t see any orca but they are known to frequent these waters. Plenty of bird life though - bring binoculars.

Thank you for your kind review! We’re thrilled to hear that Buxa Chalets provided the perfect setting for your New Year break in Orkney. It’s wonderful to know you found the beds so comfortable, the kitchen well-equipped, and the views over to Hoy as breathtaking as we do. While the orcas were elusive during your stay, we’re glad you were able to enjoy the rich birdlife in the area—binoculars really do make all the difference for spotting our feathered visitors! We hope to welcome you back to Buxa Chalets in the future, perhaps for another chance to spot those orcas!

Buxa Farm Chalets are absolutely exceptional. The welcome from Kathy is very friendly and she remains easily contacted, available and helpful throughout your stay. (She rushed to help with the one problem we had, despite the fact that it was entirely of my own making.)

The location is stunning, with panoramic views across Scapa Flow to Hoy and Graemsay and, being approximately half way between Kirkwall and Stromness, extremely well placed for touring Orkney.

The chalets are unbelievably well and thoughtfully equipped and extremely comfortable. There are lots of very generous touches in terms of the provision of toiletries, DVDs, CDs and so on, and there is a welcome hamper with wine and local produce.

If you like roughing it on holiday, Buxa Farm Chalets are not for you!

We recommend the place unreservedly and would return in a heartbeat.

Thank you for such an exceptionally good review of Buxa, especially heartwarming since it is your first time staying! We are delighted that you enjoyed the facilities and the panoramic views. Your observation about roughing it on holiday made me chuckle, I tried to furnish Buxa with more luxurious surroundings! Although you managed to do a great deal during your stay, I hope that you will be back to explore even more of what Orkney has to offer!

Buxa Farm Chalets are perfect for any stay on Orkney. a mere 30 mins from Kirkwall (on a slow day) and only 15 mins to Stromness and it's delight of a museum. You are 5 mins from Houton where you get the ferry to the Scapa Flow Museum, a really worthwhile trip.

IMHO, the chalets have the best view in Orkney, looking out over the Scapa Flow towards the Hills of Hoy, Stromness and it's lighthouse. You have an amazing 270 degree view of the channel, with Gannets and Cormorants diving for fish. It is a short distance down to the shore where you can walk along the beach.

Whilst we stayed there was a 40 mph storm from the Atlantic. We were warm and toasty in the chalet, with underfloor heating and a log fire, (which we did not need to use). The wind was fierce but the noise in the chalet was minimal. No rattling of shutters or windows. The kitchen is very generously fitted with every contraption you might need, as well as washing machine and iron.

There is excellent wifi, good TV and even a TV in the kitchen. The bathroom and showers are equally well provided, clean and hot water plentiful. Kathy and her husband (proprietors), are first rate at re-cycling and give all left over food to the local foodbank in Kirkwall. Kathy is very efficient, with e generous welcome pack of local goodies.

In conclusion, I cannot recommend them highly enough and will definitely use them again when we return to the Islands.
