Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We usually stay at The Old White Hart in the village but were unable to as they don’t take dogs, which the Marquess does. We arrived to a less than enthused welcome and it almost seemed that it was a chore for the manager to book us in. The rooms were ok but no plug for the sink and a weird plastic suction plug for the bath. The mattress on one bed was like sleeping on bricks, on the other it had collapsed. The lady running the bar and young waitress who served us were great and really pleasant. The Indian food is good, the English food not so much. Not sure how you can get scampi wrong but the kitchen succeeded. The breakfast was just awful. No tea offered just a weak lukewarm substitute from a vacuum flask. Two slices of toast and one pat of butter, no condiments of any sort. The actual breakfast was dreadful, a picture tells a thousand words..

Room Tip: Don’t have the English menu and stick with the Indian menu. Take a sink plug.

Visited here a couple of times previously and could find no fault. However, on our last trip mid-September we found that the restaurant has changed the ordering process for food. Previously, rice and naan bread were included in the price of the meal. This time round you had to order these items separately for an additional charge. To be charged £17 for a tiny dish of chicken. Jalfrezi is certainly not acceptable when there were only five small pieces of chicken in my meal. Although the food is completely fantastic, I hate being ripped off and charged over the odds. Will definitely not return here. Word-of-mouth spreads very quickly and considering we live locally we have made other people aware of the bad experience. Marques staff need to reconsider the portion sizes. Some dishes like the korma was far bigger than the jalfrezi and much better value for money. Alternatively, include rice OR naan in with the smaller portioned main meals.

The owners here were extremely attentive, welcoming and gave great service to ourselves and our dog. Yes, it's a bit tired in places and needs money spending - no doubt. But look beyond that and for what you pay it's good value, friendly and I'd come back.

If I could award this place zero I would. Absolutely disgusted. The pictures do not reflect the reality of this supposed hotel. My student halls was 100% better than this tired, damp stained place. We checked in saw the film, asked if there was an alternative, the guy at the desk lied and said they were sold out and then took us to what they called a superior room, it was not. We left as we had been truly fooled by the pictures on their booking page. They refused to refund us so I finally managed to get 50% back by called Expedia to complain. The place smelt damp, the carpets were stained, no wallpaper on the walls, tired furniture, a broken blind on the window, damp and peeling paint on the walls and the guy didn’t understand the problem. They had all the windows open to try and mask the damp and musty smell. Didn’t even bother with the pub part so can’t review that. Don’t book this place.

My husband and myself plus two dogs , had a very enjoyable stay and we were made very welcome. .Our room ( no 11 ) was perfect for us as door opened straight into garden . Beds were comfy and everything was very clean . TV could have been bigger though ! Evening meal was excellent and cooked breakfast was equally as good . The garden could do with a bit of TCL and new benches too . Lovely village and lots of wonderful walks . Definitely recommend and we 'll certainly visit again.

Hotel is looking a bit tired and outside is very overgrown. Breakfast very limited- cooked or cereal only. Came back to hotel at 4.55pm on Sunday to be told we shut at 5pm so no service of any kind available even to residents. Went to other pub in the village but had to sit outside as it is not dog friendly . By 8pm it was cold so returned to Marquees but everything shut so were in bed by 8.30! We should have been told that the pub shuts on Sunday when we booked so we could have made other arrangements . We weren’t asked on checkout if everything was ok so had to resort to Tripadvisor. Just not good enough, such a shame!

Upon arrival they moved us to a dog friendly room. However the room hadn’t been prepared for us and wasn’t cleaned properly. Fruit had been left in a drawer which I gave them during our evening meal , they didn’t apologise and shrugged it off and it made me feel uncomfortable. We also didn’t get any house keeping during our stay and when I raised this at breakfast again no apology and towels just put on bed . The room was sub standard with a shower that didn’t get hot , plastic plug to use between bath and sink as both fixed plugs where missing , dirty and paintwork disgusting , lacked ventilation, only one window in the bathroom. Noisy from upstairs occupants ( could even hear them using the loo !). Garden area was a disgrace Tiniest TV I could go on !

I booked a Groupon deal to stay in the Maquess of Exeter with wine and breakfast as a treat fir my husband for our wedding anniversary . We arrived around 17.00 and after a bit of a problem with our booking which was sorted after a while we were shown to our room which was nicely decorated with a view of the garden uts just a shame that the garden is a bit overgrown ... After we were rested we got changed and went across to the restaurant for our evening meal We decided on the Indian menu as I read great reviews on it and we wernt disappointed .. I had the butter chicken and my husband had a lamb curry with a pastry top both of our meals were absolutely gorgeous well done chef ! The next morning we had the full English breakfast with coffee , juice and plenty of toast all good. So I like to thank the owners and staff for a enjoyable night stay in the Marquess of Exeter.

We had a two night stay on a Groupon offer. A really lovely hotel in a pretty village location. The host greeted us on arrival. Our comfortable room was in the block at the rear. Nice touch was two bottles of water and glasses with the tea/coffee facilities. We ate from the extensive menus both nights. We asked to be seated on the bar area as the atmosphere was nice and casual. The breakfast, with plenty of choice, was served in the restaurant. There were tables and chairs at the back of the hotel which was nice as the weather was warm and sunny. A big thanks to all the staff for a really lovely relaxing weekend, with lovely food. We will definitely return to enjoy another stay.

Very nice stay at Marquise of Exeter in the beautiful Rutland village of Lyddington. Our newly decorated room was spacious with comfortable bed and quiet. Both our evening meals were delicious in the Indian restaurant and bar, as were breakfasts. All staff extremely pleasant, especially Gaurav, who made sure we were happy with everything. We would definitely recommend and hope to return.
