Milton Hill Abingdon Hotel boasts a prime location for exploring the city and enjoying scenic views, which numerous travelers appreciate. The hotel's ambience is a mixed bag, with some areas exuding charm and others perceived as needing an update. Guests speak highly of the clean and comfortable rooms, though there are recurring mentions of dated decor and maintenance needs. While the service garners commendable mentions for friendliness, criticisms of inconsistency and delays are not uncommon. The amenities, including a pool, are popular, but some have pointed out maintenance issues. Regarding value, the hotel's dining experience often falls short of expectations, with the food quality being a common point of contention.

Milton Hill House was well prepared for social distancing as there were clear markings around the hotel directing people, contactless payment, sanitised rooms and carefully prepared breakfast. The bar was well organised to serve drinks and order food in a safe manner. The bar staff was friendly and helpful. The house was lovely and well presented. Our room overlooked the terrace and fields. It was comfortable with a large bathroom. The iron and ironing board had been removed due to the COVID-19 restrictions, but when requested this was provided. Tea and coffee in the room was organic, a nice touch, with styrofoam cups and stirrers replacing ceramic due to hygienic reasons.

Breakfast was organised by preordering the night before and collecting at timed slots. We decided to have our breakfast on the terrace in the sunshine. There was the option to take it to our room.

It was so sad that I didn't have more time to spend there and due to the circumstances (COVID-19), the spa was not open. Will definitely return.

I would have liked to have lunch in the grounds, but there was no option for lunch due to the reduced facilities. However, the staff kindly allowed me to stay on the terrace and enjoy the sunshine in the stunning grounds.

First the good bits - The main hotel is a very impressive building and it's grounds, are absolutely beautiful. My room in the Garden Wing was very comfortable and spacious as well as being extremely clean. The bar staff and the restaurant manager are very friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant for evening meals was freshly prepared and generous in portion size. I'd recommend the DBB package as it works out to be very good value. Alcohol is pricey but that is to be expected in a hotel; expect to pay 10% to 20% more than you would in the pub. The pool and gym are small but very well maintained; I made use of both. I would make a recommendation to provide paper towels and cleaning spray for the gym equipment so that guests can clean down before and after use.

The niggly bits - Breakfast service is a bit confusing. Let me explain. There are tea and coffee machines for self use which is fine. There is also a toaster for guest use....but no bread which I found odd. Where you queue for your hot breakfast is also where you have to queue and ask for bread, cereal, pastries and cutlery. This is unusual. If you're going to put a toaster out, please put bread, cereals etc next to it. It's quicker for guests and also eases pressure on the one or two staff members behind the counter. If they could concentrate purely on serving hot breakfasts it would make their life easier and reduce the queue which could be seen extending into the corridor. Some of the reception staff are, I assume, fairly new as they are not particularly knowledgeable or helpful. The final niggle is for ladies like myself who find themselves "caught short" with monthly 'issues'. The machines in the ladies toilets are not stocked which resulted in my taking a drive to the nearest village to find a shop. Not the biggest issue on earth but having some stock on site of sanitary items, toothpaste, nappies and so forth is pretty standard in hotels of this level nowadays. It is an added extra which would make guests more comfortable.

Recommendations and compliments - The two recommendations I've already made for cleaning spray in the gym and 'extras' on site for guests would make for a more comfortable stay. Rethinking the self service options for breakfast as mentioned above, makes everyone's life easier.
My special compliments to the bar staff, particularly the young man serving on the evening of Friday 13th, the gentleman who I assume is the restaurant manager who cannot do enough for you and always has a cheery smile despite the long hours he works and the housekeeping staff who were extremely polite and helpful.

We stayed for the weekend and must say. The hotel was very organised. The staff were constantly wearing masks and there was sanitizers on every table and in every area. The dinner was lovely and cooked to perfection. And breakfast had a great selection. Overall with the current COVID situation the hotel was extremely well organised.

We stayed for four days. First we were given a very average room in the very ugly building next to the house. We were not too happy about the beds not having mattress protectors with cheap pillows and quilts, but thought, you get what you pay for! Having then been kept up all night as you can here all other rooms around you toilet activities and the heating pipes hissing all night, then the noise of banging and drilling at 8.45am was not pleasant. When this happened again in the 2nd night and morning, we complained and asked to be moved to be told ‘management tell us not to tell customers we are having work done’ and ‘the hotel is completely full so we can’t move you’. I asked to speak to the manager who looked in to it and found us a room in the main house which was much better, but still not even to 3 star standard. The 4th day we came back to the room and to our horror, it had not been serviced. I called and spoke to Sarah on reception who said ‘well the cleaners have gone home now, what do you want?’ Being polite as I am I just said ‘fresh towels and the bed made please’. She said she would speak to a manager and see what she could do. I then walked out of the room to the balcony above reception and heard Sarah in the phone to her manager laughing about the situation and saying, ‘I don’t know if they need new sheets, I don’t know if they want anything else done, they just want towels’ and more laughing. I went for a walk and when I came back to the room there was 1 towel! The bed looked like a child had made it, toiletries and coffee/tea had not been replenished nor bins changed. I went down to reception, asked Sarah why we only had one towel, let her know I heard her phone call (she went bright red!) and I asked her, ‘is it too much to ask for to have my room cleaned as a paying customer.’ She again said she would speak to a manager and see what she could do. We got back later and the room was sorted out. Why did it take all this to have done what I have paid for? Will never stay there again!

Myself and my partner had booked to stay at Milton for a weekend away. We arrived around 3.30pm on Friday 11th September 2020, on entering the hotel there was a station for sanistising hands and signs to wear face coverings, a one way system took us to reception. We were greeted by two ladies, lovely, friendly, polite staff, who did their best to ensure our booking in was smooth and easy. We were offered a time to book for our breakfast in order to prevent over crowding with the current social distancing guidelines, we was then told our room number and made our way over. Our room was 103, in the garden area. On arrival in our room we were pleasantly surprised by a lovely sized room which was very clean and perfect for our needs. We didnt stay in that evening for food as we had already booked a table out. Our sleep was good standard, the bed was comfortable and facilities for a cup of tea or coffee were available in our room. We booked our breakfast for 10am, it runs till 10.30am on arrival down at breakfast which was buffet style we were met by a lovely gentleman, extremely polite and served our breakfast to us, we were given a great choice of food, from fruit, cereal, pastries, cooked breakfast, toast jam, pots of yoghurt/honey. You were given the option to chose more than one item you werent limited to one choice (photo shows the choice we made) our breakfast was absolutely beautiful and filled us so much that we didnt need to eat again till our evening meal. All staff we met at Milton Hill were very polite, friendly and couldnt do enough to ensure our stay was a good one. Our stay was a perfect one, we will defnitely return. Thank you :)

The chef Greg is very enthusiastic and the menu options are varied and yummy, especially the fish and chips and the pea soup. Kitchen adheres to covid guidelines and gives guests individual paper bags with the food and individual disposal cutlery.
Would recommend!

We stayed for a couple of nights for a wedding we were attending close by. After months of lockdown we thought on the appearance of the website that it would be a lovely place to stay. Unfortunately photos and websites can be very deceiving and it certainly wasn’t what on advertised on the label.

Our room was covered in dust when we arrived. We got the fan out of the wardrobe as it was 3000 degrees in the room and we nearly choked with the dust that blew around. There were patches of damp throughout the ceiling from visible water damage.

Then the bathroom….we turned the taps on the bathtub and each spindle fell off one by one. The shower pressure was terrible because all the water was coming through the shower hose.

The gym is not a gym….it’s a room with about 2 treadmills, a couple of bikes and a rowing machine. The pool was alright but small again.

I emailed a few days before our arrival to enquire about taxi services and didn’t receive a response which I thought was rude.

I informed the receptionist of the shower issues and all I got was ‘sorry about that I’ll let maintenance know’.

We had family staying in a hotel called The Bear hotel in Wantage - it was a fraction of the £140/night we paid but it was in far better condition.

Milton is in desperate need of a revamp if it wants to charge those prices moving forward.

A lift wouldn’t go a miss either because finding your room on those staircases is like being in krypton factor!

I have enjoyed my stay in a room in the house at Milton Hill, the room was big and bed was very comfortable. The shower was also great, no one likes a weak noisy shower when you’re getting up early for work.

I have stayed here before and the staff are always incredibly friendly and helpful.

My favourite part of my stay was the food. Since August 2020 the food has really become something lovely and in my opinion is definitely cut above what I would expect from a pub or hotel.

Stayed here on July 20 just as lockdown was easing. Still very quiet at that time. Have stayed here several times and always look to book if possible when working in the area. First class peaceful location. Great outdoor seating areas. Plenty of parking, great rooms and very friendly staff.

Excellent sanitising and social distancing measures. Room was sanitised and sealed when I entered. First time for me to stay in the main house. The good pool and gym were still closed at the time of my stay but possibly opening in August. The usually well stocked coffee stations with fruit, which I have enjoyed several times, were unfortunately closed at this time.

Room is comfortable and spacious, well decorated and above all spotlessly cleaned. Styrofoam cups and no ironing board and iron in the room but they will supply if asked.

The restaurant was open and it was the first time I was able to have a good meal outside of my room in any hot in a while. I had the pea and leek soup to start with Katsu Curry and Rice for main. Food was well prepared and presented by the waitress who was very careful with ppe and cleanliness etc.

The curry was superb, with shallots and carrot grated over the top. I usually go for hot currys but this was tasty and subtle. Plenty of rice, it was very filling and went down well after a long day. I told the waitress how much I enjoyed it and the chef, Greg, came to personally thank me for the feedback. I nice touch that I appreciated. You could tell that they were grateful just provide a good service.

Will always look to book this hotel when working in the Oxford area, or even further away, if I can.

10/10 from me.

The accommodation looks quite inviting from the outside but inside I would say that the food and staff at reception let the place down. It’s quite disorganised and painfully slow. I’ve never known anything like it and staff don’t seem to be pushing themselves to speed things up either. We arrived and were told the room wasn’t ready (we arrived over an hour after the late check in time advertised as it is). We had a drink and sat outside for a good 45 minutes. Came back and queued again and it still wasn’t ready. So we’re told to wait. We then overheard people after us booking slots for swimming and evening meal, so I went back up to ask about that. I asked for 8pm but I was told it wasn’t free. I said I’ve just heard someone else book that time so why didn’t you tell us earlier as we were here well over an hour before anyone else! Again it just felt like the staff weren’t particularly bothered? So we booked what they had. The room was pretty good actually, room 419. There are a couple of wobbly tiles on the bathroom floor which need relifting and fitted into place and the shower door doesnt close, unless you lift it and close simultaneously but it’s quite a heavy door.

The other disappointment was the food. Evening meals seemed like microwave meals that were heated up. The chicken masala curry was awful. It didn’t seem like it was made from scratch. The breakfast was terrible also. Scrambled egg soggy and tasteless, sausages tasteless it was just a really cheap menu .

The gym was tiny and had no weights which was a disappointment. It was only some cardio machines.

Overall we had a pleasant stay but didn’t eat there after the first night and kept breakfast to a minimum as we were forcing ourselves to eat it.

At reception we found the Italian lady with black short curly hair was particularly nice and management should really look at how check in is organised. They should simply observe one day and they can’t come away saying it is a pleasant experience.

Rooms weren’t attended to throughout the stay with the excuse of Covid, which is nonsense we no other hotel had done this. Nothing was ever replaced such as tea, water and we had to call for it every day to sometimes the phone just ringing out with no answer. It’s quite frustrating. It could be a good hotel if management just take heed of some of these points. We paid a discounted rate but when we’ve seen some of the normal rates people have to pay to stay here, there’s no way we’d pay that.

We would return if they improved the customer experience at reception (why not look at self check in like most hotels do now?) And if they vastly improved the quality of the food.

Lovely grounds however And we enjoyed a cold cider with ice playing the large chess which was a good touch. Beer was out on tap also which was a shame.

It was my bday and they left a card and some chocolates which was a really nice touch!
