The owners of this Onsen were thoroughly kind (even delivering our luggage to our next nearby hotel). We were so impressed by the warmth that Senshinkan Matsuya has both in the care and attention to detail, as well as the exceptional meals. We had two breakfasts and each was unique. The building is old but that is part of its charm... please note that guest rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floor and the steps are steep. Although the bathroom is shared it has state of the art Toto toilets and is kept spotless. Now that we have seen some of the other Onsens in the area we can honestly say we loved their private tubs! ( you must reserve a time slot to have private use and they are offered at no extra cost.) The owners were helpful in making recommendations about nearby eateries and getting around town. Additionally by staying here you have access to a specific cluster of 9 other onsens. We loved this place and are already scheming about a return visit.

Absolute perfection. I felt genuinely touched by the heartfelt service provided by the innkeeper and her son. We felt welcomed and taken care of in their home. The room was spotless and you can feel the history and care of this 350 year old property. We understand the son is the 13th generation owner and the pride shows. This ryokan does not have the typical musty smell in other old buildings. Finally, the bath was great. Super hot water and clean. You are allowed to book a private session for the evening and morning you stay. Couldn’t have been more pleased, especially at the reasonable price offered.

Wonderful stay here. The owners are friendly and very helpful! Very good service. They have 2 private onsen in the basement that are available to book at no extra charge. The rooms are tranquil and comfortable (traditional tatami) The breakfast was really enjoyable too. Stairs are quite steep- so keep that in mind if your mobility isn’t great

Staying at Senshinkan Matsuya was the highlight of our trip to Japan. We new we were booking something totally out of our comfort zone but wanted to experience the culture. I am so glad we booked here as I highly recommend the entire experience. We found the staff to be very welcoming. As we arrived after 2.30pm we were picked up from the station. With the key to the onsens we enjoyed 5 of them, thankfully each time we were alone. My husband would go into the males and my daughter and I would go into the females, each time holding our breath to see if someone was in there. The township is lovely and we enjoyed wondering around. We ate dinner at a local restaurant. We booked the breakfast with our stay and again as a fussy eater I was out of my comfort zone but embraced the food and ate it all. I again highly recommend breakfast, it was traditional and the ambiance was lovely. After breakfast we were dropped to the Snow Monkeys and our luggage was stored at a designated spot arranged by the Ryokan staff near the station. Visiting the snow monkeys early was amazing, like truly amazing. We loved every minute of our stay from the rooms, the key to the onsens, breakfast and the assistance provided. I would highly recommend.

A nice little traditional Ryokan in an amazing location and very close to the Snow Monkeys. The rooms are fine, pretty basic but they do the job. The Onsen in the venue is nice and you are in very close proximity to about 8 other public onsens. We did find that there was not much open in the area but this could have been due to the season. The owner (the husband) provides a shuttle bus to see the monkeys in the morning which is pretty handY, but you'll need to take the bus back plus a 2km walk. Unfortunately though I can't give this accommodation a higher rating because the husband was just generally unpleasant and not very friendly - he also just watched my partner struggle with her suitcase up the stairs rather than offering assistance, which is the minimum you would normally expect from any good accommodation. Also, everything is on a very strict shechdule and quite regimented - in the morning my partner found out her family dog was being put to sleep, so she was quite upset and we were a but slow in getting ready for the 9am bus to see the monkeys, however, at 8:50 the owner was knocking our door and seemed quite angry that we were not already downstairs and he told us people were waiting, even though it wasn't even 9am yet. Unfortunately this attitude didn't make us feel any better that morning but thankfully the Snow Monkeys did! On another note though, the female staff all seemed very pleasant so it's a shame that the husband tainted our experience there.

We are a family of five (three teenage children). We caught the train from Nagano to Yudanaka Station. The owner only picks you up from the train station between certain times. On arrival at this traditional Ryokan, which is centrally located in the town, we were seated at the reception with a welcome tea and exchanged paperwork. The owner explained a few things about the town and the onsens. Once the owner dropped us at our room we did not see him again until the next morning. We asked to have one room accommodating all five of us which he did. This was cosy but we were happy to be able to stay as one group. We were given kimono's and geta's (wooden clogs) and the key to the towns onsens. This was a wonderful experience and all the family loved the whole cultural experience, walking down the cobble stone streets in the snow, even saw snow monkeys in the main street at dusk. The next morning we had a traditional breakfast which was amazing, then the owner dropped us at the snow monkey park entrance. I have to rate the service on picking us up and dropping us off, this was extremely helpful. Overall we really enjoyed our night venturing the town.

This is a really traditional (i.e. old, dated, ...) Ryokan with no lift and ensuite toilet / shower room. It even has an ancient VHS machine in the bedroom. :) Hence, there's a unique charm about this place. Do note that this Ryokan doesn't accept credit card, and you've to pay cash.

I stayed here one night and got the half board option (dinner and breakfast provided). Unfortunately, I had to leave for the train station early and wasn’t able to partake in the breakfast. The dinner was great. A sampling of many different things: pork and veggie hot pot, salmon and scallop sashimi, soba noodles, sesame tofu, pickled vegetables, mushrooms with buckwheat, chawan-mushi (egg custard they cooked with shrimp, edamame and mochi) to name a few. And that’s aside from the miso soup, rice and dessert. Usually with that many different flavors, it is difficult to balance them so that they don’t all taste the same or that they don’t overpower each other. The flavors were subtle, balanced and seasonal. It was wonderful to see persimmon in a few of the dishes since it is a fall fruit. The couple who owns the ryokan provided wonderful hospitality and Seiko-san (the wife) was helpful explaining things to me in English. In addition, the Shibu Onsen area has nine public onsen that you can try if you stay at a ryokan in the area. Each is said to help with various ailments (e.g., stomach/digestion, skin issues, acne, gout, women’s issues, etc.). You get a key that opens the doors to these onsen. A wonderful respite from a hectic day of traveling. Thank you to the staff of the Matsuya!

We spent three nights at Senshinkan Matsuya in late September and loved it. We called the owner before getting on the train at Nagano and he came and picked us up. The room was a simple but very clean traditional room. It included a tea making set, sink and wardrobes for clothes. The mats were very comfortable to sleep on and we didn't hear any noise from the other guests. If you stay here, I recommend including breakfast and dinner. Every day we were given something different and uniquely Japanese. The quality of the food was divine, some of the best I ate while in Japan. On the last night they gave us a private dining room. There aren't too many options for dining in the town so eating at the inn is not only a way to experience traditional Japanese fare but also makes it easy. The rooms do not have their own bathroom but the shared bathrooms were always clean and well kept. The onsen downstairs was very hot but beautiful and clean. The owners of this inn are wonderful and very accommodating. They drove us to the snow monkey park and one evening we wanted to go to a local pub and they drove us there! The next day they took us to the train station. I cannot recommend this inn enough. It was the highlight of our trip. The town is beautiful and visiting the nine onsens is a lot of fun. Thank you Senshinkan Matsuya for a wonderful stay!

The town was very small and quaint but still comfortable enough for at least one day just walking around and trying the different public onsen that my hotel gave me access to. The locals were friendly and tried to be accommodating whenever possible. Without snow, there wasn't too much else to do, but I really enjoyed just visiting the onsen and relaxing, and would gladly revisit to do so again.
