We were looking for a ryokan at Shirakawa-go which provides more privacy. I read a lot of reviews of other ryokans in the area had very thin wall, with the exception of this one. Location - it i just directly opposite the bus stop. So, it was an easy 2 min walk to the ryokan, carrying our luggages. - However,...

This is one of the best family run hotels that I have visited in Japan. The hotel building is about 130 years old, but is well maintained and clean. It does not have its own hot spring but this should not deter you from staying in this hotel. The owner would drive you to his hot spring partner which is...

This is Ryokan at it's best. We loved our upstairs Tatami room overlooking the river. There are no shower facilities, but the very-clean sink and toilet area downstairs worked just fine for us. And you should take advantage of the gratis tickets to the Onsen (which is a 2 minute walk away) which has fantastic waters and atmosphere. It was...

We loved everything about his hotel. It's real, authentic with excellent local hospitality. We were greeted by two very lovely daughters of the family. They were warm and friendly, and tried their best to communicate with us in English. It was a nice touch and a good start of our stay. We stayed in room No. 1, which is apparently...

My family and I stayed here for one night and we were greeted by the friendly family who run and live in the inn for over four generations. We had a clean basic room with a beautiful river view with a dual air-conditioning, oil heater and electric mat. We stayed in January so it was quiet cold, but the family...

Since I was the first one to review this place and since I go there every year I need to update my review. This year was a disappointing experience to some extent. They renovated their toilets downstairs beautifully and it seemed to have taken a toll on the food. I would like to also mention that when you do make...

A friend and I spent one night here while travelling in Japan for two weeks. The inn was family run and basic in appearance. We had a room overlooking the creek at the back of the building. At first we were concerned we wouldn't be able to sleep due to the sound of the fast flowing water from the mountain...

I feel bad writing this review, as this is a family ran place, and they are sweet people, but I was not impressed with this place. For 150 US dollars you get a beautiful river view in the cutest Japanese town, but the rest is not satisfying. The room was cold and they asked us to turn the main heater...

Stayed in Shiroyamakan twice already and going there again in November. We go to Japan every year mainly to eat Japanese food which is really not the same outside of Japan. This place has the best food in the entire country. Both times we stayed there three nights and had three dinners and three breakfasts. Each meal had a minimum...
