We stayed here for one night, and were treated as very special guests. The food was the best we had over our entire stay in Japan. Our hostess and family were delightful, despite the lack of a common language. The Accommodation is spacious and the Gassho itself a wonderful building. You can't beat the feeling of staying in a real...

tatami mat rooms, heaters provided. about 6 rooms total. common toilet rooms, sinks in hall, common bath (but one use at a time). Food was great, and ate in common room, with fire pit. Note, our clothes smelled like smoke for a good long time because of this though. Would suggest using Yukatas provided when eating. Good location, off main...

Magoemon was everything I was hoping for it to be. We had a cozy small room with a great view onto the garden on the backside of the house. The food was stellar, probably the best we've had on our entire trip. I'd recommend anyone who wants to experience rural Japan to spend at least 1 night at Magoemon, but...

We booked this through Japaneseguesthouses dot com because the innkeeper does not speak English and they don't have online bookings. It was a traditional Gassho style building that had six other guests when we were there (I think that put them at capacity) and we had one of the two rooms facing the back with a waterfall within earshot and...

Pros: * Great dinner and breakfast meals! * Great location that's easy to find * Rooms have heated floorboards for added comfort * I thought the price was alright. Cons: * Hospitality was so-so. (We reserved the hotel months in advance and requested the room by the stream. When confirmed our arrival time the day before we arrived). When we...

If you want to experience life in the countryside of Japan, this cozy house really makes that happen. The absolutely best thing for us was the food! Up until this hotel we had been in Japan for over two weeks and the food was kinda OK but nothing special...but here! Don't miss it!

My friend and I stayed at Magoemon for 1 night in May 2015. The food and facilities were wonderful. However, I had a horrendous experience with beg bugs which ruined my trip to Japan. So future travellers be warned... The night of our stay, we noticed many small light grey and brown stains on our doonas (or quilts). Having had...

The location is fabulous and romantic. Even if we did not understand a word from the host, but we still felt they were very friendly. But for the quite high price we paid, I find the room very small and the heating was quite complicated. I understood that you could only take a shower in the evening, but I like...

We had a two days tour at Ogimachi last week and stay overnight here. It was a great experience to stay at an original gassho zukuri minshuku, although not all the equipments are from Edo period, of course ^^ The owner are friendly and if you can speak a little Japanese, it will be very helpful. The food was awesome,...

We arrived early in the morning and there was no problem in leaving our luggage until check in, later in the day. A large and magnificent Gassho-Zukuri home with immense character and within easy walking distance to the main walking bridge. Comfortable and clean tatami floored room with large low table and an effective heater. ''Paper thin'' walls between rooms....

“I don't know if all rooms are the same but my room has a nice view over the garden when I open the side door of the room. Although it's too cold for me to step outside, I opened the door a little while at night to see the stars from the room and opened it in the early morning, the feeling was so lovely.”
