IN SHORT : We loooovvved our stay at Sumiyosiya ! The other reviews are pretty much spot on ... Yes, Sumiyosiya is really that grrrreaat :-) SOME DETAILS : Do however take note that ryokans typically have little hanging room and shelves / drawers for clothes, so we had to "live out of our suitcases" for 5 nights ... Also,...

We had a very comfortable stay at Sumiyosiya. Hiro and all his staff were extremely pleasant, and helpful. Our rooms were very warm and clean, as were their various Onsen's. They organised transport for our luggage and ski equipment to and from Nozawa Central. Their food and service was of an extremely high standard. Their breakfast- both traditional and and...

My husband and i stayed 4 nights here recently and absolutely loved Everything about it. From the great location to the snow travelator to the welcoming hospitality of every single person working there. Our stay at Sumiyosiya and Nozawa Onsen was the highlight of our trip in Japan. Everything about our stay in this ryokan was wonderful and felt genuinely authentic - far surpassing other ryokan we stayed in during our travels. We will definitely come back someday. The ryokan is conveniently located very close to the 'travelator' that takes you to the...

Great location very close to main street and Yu tube to the slopes, breakfast excellent, very comfortable rooms, service outstanding, arranged a day trip for me skiing to...

Can't rate this place highly enough. Hiro and all staff are wonderful and the service was exceptional. Great advice and recommendations for eating and sightseeing. We were treated as honoured guests and we greatly appreciated every courtesy afforded us. Guests are encouraged to wear traditional Yukatas and it makes for a wonderful immersive escapist vacation. Breakfast each morning, and the...

We travelled as a family of 4 (2 little Misses), stayed 7 nights as part of our 15 night trip to Japan. Sumiyosia is a fantastic little ryokan, the staff were friendly and tried to help in every way. We wanted an authentic Japanese experience and we truly did staying here. Go for the Japanese breakfast, its different, yummy and...

Fantastic friendly service and great cultural experience. Be prepared to change your slippers often, wear you Japanese robes around the hotel and bath with others au natural (not mixed). You will be asked if you want your bed put away each day (we forgot one day and it is a bit of a pain going over it). Try the Japanese...

Family of 3 for skiing. The host Hiro and all staff were absolutely top notch, with most speaking a little English which helps greatly, as none of us had any Japanese. Ski and gear storage extremely easy just inside entrance. Parking right at the front door, and staff constantly kept clear any snow from and in the vicinity of the...

“If you are a Westerner, don't opt for the "western" beds as the futons are sublime. The top floor rooms are great.”

“If the rooms had a european pillow option, that would be perfect as westerners are not used to the japanese pillows. For 100 yen, leave your skis and skiboots at St Antons ski locker rental at the top of the moving footway at the end of each day! Saves lugging them up and down the hill!”
