After travelling for 2 hours by train from Osaka to Nagoya then to Yunoyama Onzen area, we were rather tired and glad we found this property which is only 5 minutes Taxi ride from the train station. (Later we realized we could have arranged free transportation in hotel)

The Ryokan locates in a very quiet and residential area and is a famous destination for Onzen Bath and beautiful scenery.

Upon arrival, the staff was at ground floor greeting us and brought us up via a lift to the reception check in lounge. 90% of the visitors were local Japanese and my partners and I seemed to be the only foreign guests. The receptionist was very friendly and attentive, his English was also fluent so check-in was smooth and efficient. The receptionist recommended us to pick our own yukata - Japanese Kimono style bathrobe before heading to our guest room which was very nice.

I have reserved one of their larger room with a Private Onzen bath and upon entering my room, I was...

Shikanoyu is one of the few hotels open and running in this little valley. In a walk along the main road, we found most of the buildings were shut down and gutted with broken doors and windows--giving the area a very sad feeling of a good era long past. There is a nice river with some attempts at development and a rope way up to a nearby peak, but there are no easily noticeable trails or other attractions nearby.

The hotel itself is well-kept if not a bit odd-guests need to enter a small chamber area and then take an elevator up to the front desk. The host made a brief attempt to speak English but once he discerned that we could get by in Japanese the look on his face was clearly one of relief, so I have a feeling that some Japanese ability will come in handy...at the very least a reliable dictionary. The room was clean, airy, and had plenty of extra bedding (good for adding to the traditionally hard pillows offered at ryokan). We opted for a special meal which put us in a...

It is an old story. A hurt deer soaked in this hot water and healed a wound. It is said that this is the beginning of this hot spring. The wound of the heart of all of you may heal this hot spring, too. Here is delicious Japanese food and a hot spring, a smile of the tender staff. Come by all means! ... more   less

“We requested a non-smoking room and got one. This is seems to be a new and welcome trend in ryokan since tatami and futon can easily absorb tobacco smell.”
