We had some trouble checking in as my complicated Dutch name had been written down in Katekana, but thanks to help from the local information centre and the Tokyo and Amsterdam branches of the travel agency that booked our stay, eventually we got our room. We immediately forgot our difficulties as this was our first experience of shokubo lodging and...

We stayed here for one night in April 2015. There was a monk that spoke English fairly well and explained to us the rules of the establishment. The room was spacious and quiet. The food was delicious and plenty for our American, meat-eating appetites. We woke up early to watch the prayers. They were simple but we enjoyed them. Overall...

Great food. Enriching prayer service. This place definitely caters to local Japanese who are in Koyasan for religious reasons. It shouldn't be considered lodging. It's above all a monastary and the monks allow you to stay there. The rooms are very cold and austere... But i guess that goes along with the vows that the monks took. Then they whip...

Although the monk that look after us at Saimon-in was lovely and helpful and the food was delicious, Saimon-in is a little run down compared to other lodgings in Koyasan. Considering you are paying around the same amount to stay at all of them I would keep this in mind. I decided to try Saimon-in because the photos looked great...
