Visited River Valley Lodge in Feb, when we first arrived we were briefed by a member of staff, it felt a bit like school camp as we were told what we had to do while we there and weren't really given much choice and i felt a bit insulted, later we attended the roast dinner which was fantastic, incredible spread,...

We stayed in a double lodge, which we found very very small. Upon arrival the staff addressed the group for a good 15 minutes and it was quite confusing as various members of staff spoke over each other with contrasting information which seemed a little odd. The bathrooms by the lodge were lovely and very clean, the shower blocks weren't...

Such a pretty lodge with a lovley river right next to you, in the middle of nowhere and a really chilled place. Staff were all really fun and helpful. We stayed in a private double chalet these were really cute and good if your in a couple and don't want to sleep in the 40 bed dorm! Only downfall was...

Having visited similar setups in Canada I can say the River Valley Lodge exceeded my expectations. We hade a perfect little private room with a big bed and reasonable bathroom. Dinner was a set menu, but far too much food for the two of us to manage. Beer and wine could be purchased (and was). There were lots of Breakfast...

Wow what a fantastic trip my teenager and I loved it. 5 days 6 nights, 80 km of river and amazing scenery. The guides were funny, relaxed and very experienced. This is definitely a hidden gem, amidst the many NZ rafting options. Small group enriched the experience and camping was a breeze even for a novice. Plenty of time to...

Kia ora Alison, Thank you for the lovely review. I have also heard firsthand from our guides about what an excellent trip it was, with a great group of people full of energy. Great advice for other travellers, regarding the wetsuit and jandles options. We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place and love sharing our enthusiasm...

We are a family of 4 from Brisbane and have travelled NZ extensively over the years. This is possibly the best place we have stayed, which is a big call! It's so nice to find something so authentic. It has a few rough edges and eccentricity, but that's part of the charm. For example we enjoyed the evening repertoire of...

Kia ora Jonathan, Thank you for taking the time to review the lodge. There are in fact two particuarly good walking trails from the lodge; one across the river that you have to take the river trolley to get to and it takes you up MT. Aorangi. The other trail follows the river and is particuarly beautiful. We are working...

River Valley Lodge was an amazing experience, a few of the hostels arranged by the Kiwi Experience are a bit dirty and cramped but the lodge was so lovely! You walk into a huge wooden room with long tables and a huge open fire in the middle of the room. The staff are incredibly friendly and want to make you...

Kia ora Alex, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We do have a collection of really wonderful staff here, all so passionate about the company and the environment around us. The kitchen staff are particuarly wonderful; they take such great time and care to make delicious meals using foods we have grown from the land. So...

This was one of the best nights I've had, it gets pretty rowdy at night for a lodge in the middle of nowhere! But it was great fun. However, limited amount of toilets is unhygienic and frustrating. And the "amazing" roast was so overrated. My advice would be to save your $16

Kia ora Tom Thanks for your review. I don't know what happened with your roast dinner as the overwhelming feedback we receive - just check out the other reviews - is very positive. Did you voice your concerns to our staff at the time? If you had I am sure they would have tried to put matters right. You are...

A group of us came to River Lodge for a 40th birthday party, we had an epic rafting trip with fantastic guides! The guides (Derek, Spencer, Kirk & Ryan) read our group perfectly and made the adventure and experience something truely memorable. Our cabin accomodation was simple, clean and comfortable- perfect for the weekend! The food was great and the...

My wife and I spent a couple of nights here in October 2016. Spend the money and get one of the river front deluxe cabins. They are worth it. The cabin was simple, clean, and came with access to the spa. The meals in the restaurant were all very good. While you are here, go for a horse trek and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The basis of the River Valley Experience is what happens outside the Lodge. River Valley started as a rafting company on a family farm, in the back blocks of Taihape. With one of the world's top half day Grade 5 rafting trips literally on the doorstep, it was a natural progression. A horse trekking stables was added over time, and it is these two adventurous activities, rafting the beautiful Rangitikei River, and exploring the magnificent hill country which is at core of River Valley. River Valley Lodge is an Adventure Lodge. It was built as a base for rafting and horse back riding, and this has not changed. What has changed is the clientele! The Lodge caters for young backpackers after an adrenaline fueled Grade 5 rafting trip, through to veteran mature adventurers, with an accommodation mix from bunk rooms to en-suited riverside suites. The Lodge restaurant and cafe serves a selection of fresh country style food, much not only prepared on site, but also grown in the extensive vegetable gardens. If shopping and cell phone reception are critical to your daily existence, then River Valley is certainly not the place for you. ... more   less
