Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Afternoon tea for 60+ guests - room beautifully laid out, staff attentive and extremely helpful. Food delicious with a wide variety of cakes. The balance of savoury v sweet options could perhaps be adjusted. Particular thanks go to Kelsey on reception for his lovely manners and helpfulness. A big thank you to the lady staff member who rescued me from a wine spillage and gave great gin advice - I am so very sorry I did not get your name. You and Lynn were great company and to be admired for your patience and unflappability when the evening meals for 30+ got a touch chaotic. A ‘reet good do’ for my Mum who smiled throughout. Thank-you to all involved from the Mitcheson clan.

Booked for Easter Sunday roast lunch for 5. Understandably very popular but offered 4pm. Our concerns about food and staff being less excellent as they started serving lunch at 12pm disappeared the moment we walked in. Warmly greeted and happy to waited in their comfortable restaurant waiting sofas until the table had been freshly prepared. Other family went upstairs to wait in the bar with outstanding views over Gateshead.
A freshly laid table with clean linens was prepared and attentive un intrusive service by the young staff continued the warm reception.
The roasts were up to our high standards with outstandingly flavoursome freshly cooked veg and home made? Yorkshire puddings to die for. The deserts appeared to be ‘bought in’ and a reasonable selection. Including cheese. Both courses were beautifully presented in white porcelain. Portions were generous but so delicious nothing was left.
The bill was reasonable. Gibside Hotel was recommended by a relative - we can understand why.
We’ll be back!

We booked this hotel for a family wedding .
Pros;
Food was good.
Friendly staff.
Cons;
Beds were terrible.
Decor in rooms dated.
NO LIFT in hotel and access from car park via a lot of steps.
The hotel is badly in need of an update ,180 £ for 2 nights is not cheap outside of a city .
It's living on its past glory I feel.

Minimal parking but opposite a pay and display, which is free after 5.30 saturday abd Sunday. Professional reception
Our room was on the 2nd floor. We wasn't directed to a lift so we trudged the stairs.
Our room made our eyes water with the smell of bleach but the bathroom was spotless so a few flushes and ran sink taps and Our eyes stopped watering.
The room was clean with 90s mahogany woodwork and furniture and green extremely worn and tired carpet
Only lying on fresh white linen my pillows smelled . I never do the 4inabed linen stripping but I had to see why the pillows stank. I regretfully will have nightmares with my findings
The pillows were so extremely stained. One had another pillowcase 8underneath, which was so stained I was too scared. How housekeeping can justify putting clean linen on such disgusting pillows is beyond me
Only halfway toilet roll, luckily I always take tissues
The bath drainage was blocked.
The breakfast brought a bit of redemption
The location is good for local bars and restaurants

They advertise Deluxe Rooms at additional price with photo's from the Family suites and their King Beds are two different singles pushed together. When I raised this I was told 'I see how that's confusing but it's just how it is'. I asked to speak to the Manager but they didn't call me back.

My wife and I stopped here recently and were disappointed with this hotel.
On arriving with several bags and clothing we were told that there was no lifts in the hotel.
This meant we had to physically carry our luggage up several flights of steps ,then return back to the car to get the remainder.
The room was very dated and two beds had been pushed together with one giant duvet spread over it.
One double point in the whole of the room,we went and bought an extension just so we .
could charge our phones, use the kettle , hairdryer etc.
Dark mahogany furniture did not help.
Generally needed updating.
No toilet brush in the bathroom,I was told the domestic staff were responsible for that, bit embarrassing.
The facilities were good although we never had an opportunity to try them.
Parking is hit or miss ,but a car park is available at £2.50.per day.
Lovely views out the wind ,good supply of coffee and tea, staff also very helpful.

Visiting for drinks and Sunday lunch.
Outside seating area was lovely. There was an England match on so we had reserved a seat Outside but went inside to watch some of the match, the service both inside and out was excellent and we went back Outside later to have our Meal. We both had the beef dinner which was the best Sunday dinner I've had out for a few years, everything was cooked to perfection, lots of beef, many types of veg some of them oven roasted, perfect Yorkshire pud, even an extra gravy boat full of lovely thick gravy. Washed down with a nice bottle of pinot grigio. Perfect afternoon

Liked · The evening meal in the Bistro was very good, and there was a buzz in the Bistro. The staff were great and very helpful.
Breakfast was good with plenty to choose from service could have been a little quicker.

Disliked · Our room 201 needed a makeover badly, the décor was tired, as was the bed, there were not enough sockets and only 50% of the lights worked.
The most annoying thing was the toilet, liquids were disposed of but anything else just stayed where it was, I reported this to reception when I went down for breakfast, the lady was apologetic, but in my opinion not bothered.
My wife was quite upset that we were leaving the room dirty, we would not do this at home and would not to expect to have this problem at a hotel either, no amount of flushing or pouring water down the bowl would clear it.
One other point when we were eating our evening meal we kept getting wafts of smoke from the smokers outside some how we were getting the dirty second hand smoke, the table sitting next to ours commented on this as well.
The smoker's should be forced away from the building.

We Visited the Gibside for a couple of days before Christmas staying here en route to Weymss Bay for a Christmas meet up with our Children and their partners,
We had a beautiful room overlooking the back of the hotels car park with stunning lights of the Metro Centre in the distance .
The room was lovely and warm , Clean, and had tea /Coffee facilities too which is a must for me .
We also had our 2 small breed dogs with us .
We have stayed here a few times now and we’re never disappointed,
The service from the staff is always always friendly from reception to bar nothing is too much trouble .

Breakfast is included too which also is a bonus

Big shout out to a lovely lady called Carol who served us Breakfast each morning and again nothing was too much trouble .
Breakfast was a full cooked ensemble with meat or vegetarian choices of sausages . I tried both over the two nights we stayed .
With cereal choices and fruit and fruit juices too.
So thank you to The Gibside hotel . From Mr and Mrs Burn also Minnie and Skye our Westie and Scottie dogs .

P.S We did return on the 27th of Dec for another nights stay to break up our long journey from Weymss Bay to South West France as the weather was atrocious.
