One of our stops on a bicycle ride around the north coast of Scotland. The room was well-sized with an ensuite bath and heated towel rack. The hotel has secure bicycle storage. The living room on the main level has lots of comfy seating, perfect for relaxing after a long day of cycling. The Stag pub has a generous inventory of Scotch to sample and the restaurant food was excellent. I hope to visit again!

I stayed in the Kinlochewe Hotel for 4 nights in early October. The Hotel is in a brilliant location in the Torridon / Fisherfield area among wonderful mountains. Donald and the staff could not have been more welcoming, friendly and helpful. I had a comfy, cosy room. I had my dinners in the Hotel and they were delicious and good value. (Great selection of Single Malts) The breakfast selection was good and very appetising. I would highly recommend this hotel to people interested in staying in this region. It is ideally located for access to some of the most interesting mountains in Scotland.

I’ve been to the Kinlochewe Hotel several times since a first visit in 1977 and always enjoyed the visit. I’ve stayed a couple of times, once in the bunk house and once in the hotel. Things now seem to have changed and there is sadly no longer a public bar. We had a meal in the restaurant which was fine but then we had to retire to the (rather chilly) residents lounge for a further drink. By 20:30 everything had shut down and there was no option other than an early night! All a bit disappointing…

Response from Donald Maclennan, Owner at Kinlochewe Hotel
Responded 5 Oct 2023
Hi Roger and Wendy. Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay however I would like to point out that there is a public bar (which is where you had dinner) but, at the time/date of your visit, there were almost no customers. On the night of your visit we had only two rooms booked and only a further two tables booked in the restaurant. That was a total of 8 customers for dinner and drinks. We cannot drum up business that is not there. Many other hostelries/B&Bs have already closed for the season because of lack of customers. I am operating a small business and costs are obviously involved in keeping a bar open. Staff wages, energy costs, sales are all factors we have to consider. We will remain open until the end of October, however the bar opening hours have to be determined by demand. Sadly, at this time of year, there is very little demand. Re: the chilly lounge. The temperature here in Kinlochewe has dropped recently. Our heating timer was been changed to suit.

Just had an amazing weekend staying at the hotel with my sister. Rooms were comfortable and clean and breakfast was lovely to set us up for our day exploring the stunning surroundings. We ate in the Stag restaurant 2 nights of our stay, food was absolutely superb and a cozy traditional lounge to enjoy an after dinner drink. NB, Pre reservations are essential for the restaurant to avoid disappointment A big thank you to Donald and his team for making our stay enjoyable, many thanks from the Gilbert's!!

We toured the NC500 staying at seven different BandB/Hotels. This hotel was the most expensive of all our stays yet failed to deliver when compared. The lounge area was cold, the settees tired and worn. The bar area come restaurant was pleasant enough until we asked for a slice of lime in one of our drinks. The bar man proceeded to cut a lime before attempting to place it in our drink with his fingers. The manager stopped him, apologised and informed us he was in training. Accepted, we moved to our rooms which were adequate. The website said they were refurbishing the hotel. It was difficult to see where this refurbishment was taking place. We walked through the dining area and noted vacuum cleaners and other cleaning materials left next to the toaster. Evening meal was fairly priced and adequate. Breakfast was poor. We noted the waiter (same person as the barman the night before) was wearing the same clothes. He had a outdoor coat on with sleeves that looked like they had been used to wipe something with. He looked unkept and his hair was dishevelled. We saw a caravan in the grounds and thought he might be living in it. We did not eat our breakfast but took tea and left. On paying our bill it was also noted the manager was in the same attire as the last evening, trainers and t shirt. There was no front of house dress code, Hygiene did not appear to be high on the hotels agenda nor did the etiquette, such as not leaning over your plate to deliver a tea pot. The website and reviews do not reflect what we experienced. Sadly, in this area of Scotland, you tend to be a captive audience with very limited alternatives.…

Refurbishing an old rambling building as a hotel is a challenge. It has charm and compromises. One can see that the previous owners have done their best with good taste to improve and update the rooms. It is to be hoped that under the new management this progress will be maintained. Our rooms were moderate in size with good beds. We shared a good bathroom with family members in the next room. The evening meal was really excellent as was the cooked breakfast. The location is quiet and beautiful with a nature park next door (Beinn Eighe) with marked trails. Parking is sufficient. Wi-Fi is present, but slow. Tips for the owner: have a handyman check out fittings. Update the information to reflect the change in management - it is a little confusing to get emails under the name of the previous owners and an information book which so clearly represents their ideas and taste. That said, we had a pleasant and comfortable stay.…

Me and my mate stayed here for one Friday night recently. We also had dinner in the restaurant. We arrived a little early but were greeted by the owner Donald who was authentically welcoming and let us check in. The room was nice, spacious, clean and comfortable. The food in the restaurant was excellent. The menu was original. I had a chickpea curry which was probably the best of its kind I’ve had anywhere. My mate loved his venison stew. Starters and desserts also top notch. The coffee and whiskey (Ardbeg) rounded off a perfect evening-which was spent in the communal lounge chatting to other guests. Breakfast was also quality and substantial. Donald was an ever present host keeping his eye on things. He also has a really good team behind him. Overall a really good stay and a spot on place providing warmth, comfort, good food and drink in the midst of some of the most spectacular landscapes in Britain. Well done Donald and team-we wish you every success and all the best for the future. …

After several pleasant visits to the hotel bar (the only one for miles around) over the years, dropped in after a hillwalk hoping for a drink and some light refreshments about 7.30pm. Was refused, told the bar was only open between 4 and 6 and advised to go to a village ceilidh if I wanted a drink. This is a shocking way to treat guests in Scotland and I would question whether the hotel should still be granted a licence with this policy. I will never be back.

Response from Donald Maclennan, Owner at Kinlochewe Hotel
Responded 30 Sept 2023
When you arrived at 7.30 we were in full restaurant service with all tables full. I am not sure how you thought we could take more customers when we were already full. There was nowhere for you to sit and all my staff were extremely busy tending to the needs of my customers who had booked an evening meal. However, as we knew there was a ceilidh at the nearby village hall, this was suggested to you as an option. I do not understand how that is a shocking way to treat customers. I comply with all regulations needed for my license. This includes not overcrowding my bar/restaurant.

Stayed in room 5 (single room), definitely improved since my last stay in 2015 - somewhere to sit and work is very welcome. Had simply bed and breakfast, as I ate out during the day; good cooked breakfast. TV, wi-fi, tea and coffee, plenty of drawer and hanging space, all good in the room. The only criticism - mentioned to the owner on checking out - was that the atmosphere in the bathroom was very humid, with a lot of condensation; something wrong with the extractor fan? But I'd be more than happy to come back - in fact, I'm planning a 2024 Highlands tour, and this hotel is on my itinerary, I hope.

Hi Simon Many thanks for your kind review and for informing us about the humidity. On further investigation we found that the hot water pipe was leaking under the floor in that room. It was unfortunate but these things happen in a hotel as old as this (old copper pipes). It was repaired same day by local tradesman. Accept our apologies and we look forward to seeing you again in 2024. Donald and Julia

Nice room at the back of the hotel, which had a little porch on the back, meaning you could come in straight from the car park. Comfortable bed. Small bathroom, which unfortunately had no hooks or rails to hang anything up (I did feed this back to our host on departure and he thanked me for pointing this out). Shower was OK and the room was nice and clean. We ate dinner in the restaurant, which was excellent, but the breakfast service was a bit slow (the room was full though) and things like cereals weren't replenished very quickly. No decaff coffee was available. The hotel is in a good location for the NC500 and we enjoyed our stay overall.
