Detailed Reviews
It’s hard for hotels under Covid when there’s few guests around, but we couldn’t have been made more welcome.
The hotel is charming with tartan carpets setting the atmosphere and a very attentive level of service in the bar and during dinner and breakfast. The food was excellent, from scallops on Stornaway black pudding to haggis-stuffed chicken with whisky cream sauce. Breakfast was varied and filling, just what you need to set you up for the day.
Our room was comfy with a large en-suite bathroom. Despite facing the main road, there was no undue traffic noise when the window was shut. Even the church clock refrained from striking the hours during the night, so all peaceful.
Lovely town, superb bird life seen along the River Esk and out into the surrounding woods. Do visit!

Booked a table and we sat down to attentive staff and a delicious menu, which is slightly different from the norm and gave the impression of quality and lovely ingredients. The wine was delicious and we ordered the fish.
The food arrived and it looked tempting and very nicely presented. It was lovely from start to finish and the chips were home made and really yummy. The waiters were never far away, but the ambience was relaxed and they had thoughtfully put a family with young children in the next room so we could eat in peace. I ordered the cheese board for pudding and was really happy that the cheese was presented at room temperature, so I could enjoy the flavour, rather than blocks of cold tasteless cheese straight out of the fridge. Thank you the Eskdale for a relaxing, delicious Sunday lunch x

3rd year of staying here.
Extremely high standards of hospitality. The owners know their market.
Polite, courteous staff, housekeeping and room service faultless coupled with tasty homecooked food.
No hesitation in recommending this establishment.

A lovely well-kept delightful border town - home of the Armstrong’s with the sound of the clock tower across the street as it chimed at the top of the hour until late, lots of nature walks and hiking, I found definately worth exploring.
The hotel was traditional in style, sits on a very busy road so sadly if your room is at the front then it’s going to be noisy, other guests had room to the rear of the building which was quieter but no view from window. Upon entering my room there was an odd smell, at first I thought it was mould, damp musky type smell but couldn’t quite put my finger on it until I spoke with other guests who said the exact same thing. Spoke with a staff member who suggested opening the only 1 window in the room (which made it even noisier) so I did and indeed helped get rid of the strange smell temporarily though, but when the window was closed the odd smell returned. I felt the carpet was old, dirty and either needed washed or replaced, I certainly did not feel comfortable without shoes or slippers. Thankfully considerate extras like a robe, slippers and an umbrella were provided. Both our rooms just looked tired, and in need of a general refurb. Not sure when the net curtain was last washed either……. Bathroom light wasn’t working on arrival nor was the tv remote but staff very quickly rectified that issue. There are no lifts so anyone with a disability might find the stairs difficult to ascend. The bed itself was big and comfortable and I enjoyed the shower, although it requires a longer screen as the shower spray did end up on the floor or walls at times. Were informed by staff that if out after 11pm the front door would be locked so to take front door key, we would not be and on the 2nd night had gone outside for some fresh air before bedtime, but on trying to enter the hotel again at 10.25pm the front door was locked. Ended up phoning family member to let us in. No staff were around.
We did however enjoy every meal here, the hotel certainly has a well-deserved reputation for first class food and a great banter with the young polite and friendly staff was had by all, the younger members of staff are a credit to this hotel.
Nobody around on our departure so just left keys at reception area. A few tweaks required and this hotel could be worthy of 5 stars!!

Dear guest many thanks for taking time to review your stay with us. We are delighted that the team looked after you well, and that you found the food to be excellent, we are however surprised to read the comments on your room, we have never had any comments on odd smells from our rooms and appreciate that sometimes the road noise may be a nascence, but we are a town centre hotel. We also note that on reporting your tv remote required batteries and one of the spot lights in the bathroom was flickering that the team rectified this for you straight away, we are sad that you didn’t mention the other items you have mentioned in your review as it’s our teams aim to ensure every guest has the most memorable stay possible and they would have happily looked in to resolving these for you. We also note from the picture attached that this depicts a stain on the veneer of a drawer front sadly damaged by a previous guest, and can Suárez you this is not a dirty Mark as you have indicated. Our teams work very hard every day for every guest to ensure they have the best possible stay and will continue to do so even in these difficult times. We do hope that we can welcome you back on your next visit to langholm. Kind regards John

Turned up with no reservation when they were already very busy, but as there was only 2 of us, there was ripple of hurried activity from a few of the staff/management and within a few minutes we were sat at a table in a tastefully decorated and nicely lit dining room and presented with well laid out menus with clear explanations of each dish. Off to a good start and it only got better.
The service was attentive without being over the top and the food was exceptional!!
Stuffed mushroom starter with Stornoway black pudding and red onion marmalade was delicious and devoured in just a few minutes. Followed by dishes of duck breast and lamb cutlets and there respective sauces and accompaniments, all perfect.
All finished with the indulgent delights of a Belgian waffle smothered in a caramel sauce with a generous dollop of a Premium vanilla ice cream and garnished with a fresh halved strawberry(can you tell that I liked this) Forgive me but eating this may have resulted in one or two noises similar to those overheard from a honeymooner's bedroom. Which is sort of appropriate as we had just got married the day before.
To cap all of that the bill for this simply outstanding culinary delight was extremely reasonable.
To the management and staff of the Eskdale, thank you so much for fitting us in. It was a truly wonderful experience and we will be back! But we will book in advance next time ;-)

there are no saving graces about this hotel. The double room was a pokey little space where entry to the only hanging space, was obstructed by an armchair, which couldn't be moved as there was nowhere for it to go. The bathroom though clean was very well used 70s style suite.
We both ordered Haddock as a main course, the fish was undercooked and the chips tasted like they had been reheated. No decent cook would have allowed them out of his/her kitchen. a member of staff noted we had left most of our meal but made no comment as to why.
Breakfast the next morning was no better ,it consisted of greasy fried egg undercooked sausage and overcooked tattie scone.
I'm truely glad that we only booked in for one night. given my experiance I would never consider this hotel again and would strongly advise my friends from going there

Stayed overnight en route to the Lake District. The Hotel is located in the centre of Langholm and has a car park to the rear. The staff are very friendly and efficient with a great selection of beers and spirits in the cocktail bar. Our dinner was first class and the menu has a wide choice of items. Breakfast was also excellent. Whilst the Hotel is old, the decor internally is both modern and well appointed. Would stay here again without question.

Delighted to see standards maintained and even improved on despite the challenges of the pandemic. We were made especially welcome, as always, and it is clear that the guests safety and welfare is uppermost in the proprietor’s minds. Restaurant excellent - the lamb cutlets melted in the mouth and were full of flavour. Breakfast outstanding too!

We popped in here on a Sunday afternoon looking for coffee and were not disappointed. The lounge was small and comfortable with pictures of Langholm rugby greats on the wall ( was JPR Williams and honorary resident?). The coffee and cakes were delicious but what really impressed me was how well the staff treated a very young guest, entertaining the toddler while ensuring that she was safe. I hope some day to return and have a meal as the food looked delicious.

We stayed here for one night and had a lovely time. The hotel is an old building but is decorated in a modern way. Bed was very comfy and bathroom was huge. We dined there in the evening (we ate in the bar) and the food was 10/10 - I had scallops for a starter and duck for the main. Breakfast was also really nice and well cooked, with lots of continental breakfast items available too. Service great too throughout. Not far from the motorway if travelling. Would stay again. Many Thanks.

Yes there is a car park at the rear.
All the rooms seemed to be upstairs. The owners are lovely give them a bell and they'll answer any of your concerns.
Good Morning, thank you for your enquiry, I am afraid the Eskdale Hotel does not have any accessible rooms, The Hotel was designed and built in the 1870's as a coaching in and although we have made many improvements over the years to ensure guest comfort we have not been able to provide a lift to access guest bedroom floors or some of the public areas.
All our guest rooms are located on 1st and 2nd floors, all rooms have en-suite with a range of bath with shower over and some with walk-in showers.
If I can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us direct on 01387380357.
Kind regards
John
