Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I went here with my partner for a meal and possibly a few drinks only to be met by the man behind the bar who was very offstandish. Firstly it wasn’t even that late and we asked about food he said if you hurry up and order I will see what I can do? We then ordered drinks which would be our first and only drink, when the food did arrive he stood the whole time at the bar talking which I would not have minded only I had in mind a nice meal and conversation with my partner which didn’t occur as the whole time the staff member at the bar talked throughout our whole meal. I could not believe the slur which came out of his mouth which was clearly directed at me as a woman! He said the food had been cooked by a male member of staff and also that seem as though my partner was male he would be a great cook when asked how this was so his comment was ‘that is because he is male?’ Which was highly offensive towards me as a woman! He then said at least 3 times google top 10 chefs I can guarantee they’re male! I ended up saying to him I’m not that interested about who is in the top 10 as I only came for food and drinks not to be made to feel highly inadequate for being female! He then went on to say it’s not been disclosed about the whole cost of the queens funeral well what has that got to do with anything? My partner then said well does it matter how much? She is the queen and served our country all her life!! He made us both feel so uncomfortable with us derogatory comments due to this I won’t be returning to this establishment as his comments were wholly unnecessary and totally unacceptable towards myself as a woman. We then left and went over the road to a public house which was the only one open at the time where we were made to feel so welcome by the locals. The member of staff in question certainly needs to brush up on his people skills and choose his audience when speaking like this in public as I did not like the manner in which he referred to women as being inferior! Clearly making a number of managerial decisions which is clearly loosing this business a lot of money which isn’t good in this day and age.

There was no available accommodation in Newcastleton on the night we wanted, so we booked at the Eskdale in Langholm instead. I had previously stayed at the Eskdale in November 1968 when walking from Alnmouth to Gretna. I was not disappointed then, and neither were we disappointed in 2023. The room was quite large enough, the bed was comfortable, meals (dinner and breakfast) were excellent. Good old-fashioned Scottish hospitality!

there are no saving graces about this hotel. The double room was a pokey little space where entry to the only hanging space, was obstructed by an armchair, which couldn't be moved as there was nowhere for it to go. The bathroom though clean was very well used 70s style suite. We both ordered Haddock as a main course, the fish was undercooked and the chips tasted like they had been reheated. No decent cook would have allowed them out of his/her kitchen. a member of staff noted we had left most of our meal but made no comment as to why. Breakfast the next morning was no better ,it consisted of greasy fried egg undercooked sausage and overcooked tattie scone. I'm truely glad that we only booked in for one night. given my experiance I would never consider this hotel again and would strongly advise my friends from going there

Modest aspirations yet well executed, this is a lovely hotel with a high finish and punching above its weight. Good bed, bathroom, dining room, bar areas. Friendly and efficient staff and service, although there were some issues with confirmation of booking through Booking.com... resolved by a phone call to me in response to my direct email. Bravo, person to person interaction, not machine... how refreshing! Food is good, fairly imaginative and well executed; breakfast was better than expected.

The hotel was recommended to us by the guides at Gilnockie Tower as an excellent hotel for a Sunday roast dinner. And it was. John, the Manager welcomed us and we were very pleased to read the menu - Roast Pork with Yorkshire Pudding and fresh vegetables. There are 2 dining rooms which are very cosy and comfortable. We ordered our roast dinners and a drink and eagerly waited for our meals. We were definitely not disappointed as it was really delicious with generous portions of the pork (& apple sauce) and vegetables with a large crisp Yorkshire pudding. We also had the added pleasure of a bagpipe band leading the local children on a parade through Langholm. This was a fabulous hotel for a Sunday roast and obviously they have accommodation too, although we were already staying a short distance away.

Such a gorgeous hotel in the perfect location. Perfect stop to explore the area or stopover on your way. Amazing food (we had scallops, smoked salmon, steak pie, burger AND a sticky toffee pudding) all delicious with great personal warm service in a comfortable friendly environment. The best nights sleep ever and full English breakfast to top it off. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. Thank you

we weren't residents but went for dinner. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was very good indeed - friendly and professional. Food was very good too - for us the portions were too large which meant we had no room for dessert - shame really as some of our main courses went uneaten. The quality of the food is very good and is well cooked. We would certainly recommend the dining room and we will certainly return.

We have just stayed in the delightful Eskdale Hotel for a business trip over the bank holiday weekend. As usual we were greeted and treated with fabulous warmth and consummate professionalism by the proprietors and their staff. The hotel was very busy with some particularly demanding guests but the entire team worked to make guests comfortable and welcome. Wholeheartedly recommend this lovely hotel for a business or pleasure trip in this lovely area

Chloe our waitress was very professional, very polite and very attentive. Although we were told there would be a 15minute wait for food, our order was taken very quickly and starters were on the table in 10 minutes, so no wait at all. We sat in the front room , which was very clean and cosy. Food was very nice and fresh. Will definitely recommend
