I have stayed at the Red Squirrel before as it is the closest hotel to my elderly mother. The accommodation has always been basic but adequate, but I don't know what happened this trip; maybe new staff or less staff, but I said I'd write a review in the hopes they would read it and do better.
My husband and I booked this for the day we arrived in Ayrshire to take my mother out for a much-needed reprise from caring for my elderly Stepfather who has dementia. This involved me staying with my stepdad while my husband took Mum out for a trip to the hairdressers and a couple of big stores which she is never able to do unaided. Afterwards, we said our goodbyes exhausted and headed to the hotel.
We got our room card and headed over. The room was large enough and clean enough but the walls had holes in them as if someone had been in a hammer fight. The bed was comfortable enough and we washed up to go for a quick dinner.
Nothing I could fault in the restaurant except it was slow. The food was good and we headed to the room to sleep, but not before I'd asked about a late checkout option which was £20 to give us 2 extra hours. I paid this as I knew we needed it.
Sleep was fine as the beds were comfortable, but I got up first and had a shower. I discovered the shower curtain didn't reach the bath so by the end the floor was soaked. I also never heard my husband getting woken by a housekeeper banging on the door demanding attention. He opened it to be told checkout was 11 and we were late. My husband told her we had paid for a late checkout and were fine till 1 pm, to which she said she would need to go check that. Surely something that should be done first thing.
Awakened my husband went for his shower, but when finished we realised there were no extra towels. We had a family room that caters to 4 with ONE bath towel. We were furious. I grabbed one from the trolley further up the corridor.
I mentioned all of this when checking out but was not impressed with the reception's complacency hence I'm putting it all down here.
We have to use this hotel again, as I said it's closest to my mother and she needs an operation soon so we will need to be close by, but I do hope Marstons sees this and addresses the issues. At over £100 for the night, I'd expect much much more.

Response from Red Squirrel, General Manager at Red Squirrel by Marston's Inns
Responded 9 Jun 2024
Hi Jamie, Thank you for your review. We are currently undertaking maintenance jobs to fix the walls in our hotel rooms, and I'm sure you can understand that this is not a quick job to be completed. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your meal with us and got checked in quickly enough. I have passed over to housekeeping team in regards to the shower curtain in your room. Regarding the towel portions, unfortunately as you have stated your reservation was made on the day of arrival, our housekeeping team on this day may of been finished earlier, and our rooms are set to standard for one arrival if not booked beforehand. For any further towels, you can contact us using the telephone number found on the desk in all of our rooms. We are very sorry that your late check-out was missed from the list, however the manager on shift has stated that she had refunded this late check-out fee due to the disturbance caused. We are very sorry to hear of your experience with us this time round. And we hope that future stays with us are far more enjoyable and up to the standard we try to set. Thank you again.

This pub/restaurant hotel combi exceeded all expectations. Nice welcome & easy check in at the restaurant followed by a nice dinner. Scottish breakfast was astounding & great value, better value than some bigger chain hotels I've been to. Housekeeping are lovely & friendly when asking for more tea etc. Room was good, comfy bed with nice pillows. Tea & coffee etc came with packs of shortbread fingers, lovely touch, unexpected.
Also unexpected was to come back & find my bed made when most other places weren't entering your room during your stay. All in all a great stay, can't recommend enough.

I normally don’t leave reviews but Iv been looking forward to visit family in Stevenston and had planed staying at my cousins house. They had alerted me that the rules had changed in this area and no other household were not aloud in another house. This made my husband and I panic as this was going to be an exciting trip away. As we looked for a place to stay we booked the red squirrel in hopes we were local and by god we were! It turns out my cousin only stayed over the round about from the hotel itself. When we arrived we couldn’t have been greeted by a much nicer staff member who was called Tia. She took our details for the NHS trace and trace and directed my husband and I over to the reception area. We then checked in with Fiona on reception who couldn’t have been anymore nicer and gave us all the information we needed for our stay. We then entered the hotel as the check in is over in the restaurant and the room was spotless. I Couldn’t believe at such a reasonable price we would be getting such a great room! Breakfast in the morning was great and was served from 7 am till 11 am. This made our day before heading to my cousin. I just want to thank the staff here at the red squirrel for an amazing stay and will be back soon. Thank you.

Helen

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on a bed and breakfast basis. The rooms are clean, serviced daily and the beds very comfortable. Breakfast was of an excellent standard and the one evening meal which we had was again excellent and very reasonably priced. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Highly recommended and would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at this hotel having stayed before and knowing it is a good nights stay and conveniently close to the ferry terminal. Knowing that we were to arrive late we phoned ahead and, though we would arrive after ten pm, the receptionist was happy to take our payment details over the phone and let us know that the night porter would be there with keys. When we arrived the night porter was there within two minutes with the keys and to let us in to the building. This was much needed and a nice easy way to get settled and to bed ready for our early start to get our ferry. We will be back.

We were warmly welcomed on check in and the hotel and pub felt safe in these unusual times. COVID restrictions were clearly explained and set out.

The hotel is in a great location for getting to Ardrossan harbour. We were on the first ferry of the day and got there in just under ten minutes.

We use the Ardrossan to Brodick ferry often and will be returning.

Went with my kids for lunch, ordered kids pasta and side of sausages for my daughter, pasta came but no sausages. When I asked where they were I got told she could go and ask the chef to make them now, said no point as my daughter would be finished her pasta by then. I Ordered a steak for myself wasn't asked how I wanted it cooked as min she had wrote steak down she walked away, steak came very very well done, charcoaled burnt, couldn't eat it. Son had sticky toffee pudding for pudding, thought no way they could screw that up, how wrong was I, it had obviously been microwaved as bowl was boiling and to add insult to it they had obviously tried to dust the top with icing sugar where it came out in lumps and conjealed mess on top. Will def never be back and won't be recommending to anyone.

Beware! The hotel is separate from the Reception and Restaurant which is annoying when its raining!

The accommodation was standard fare for Marstons with an average bed and skinny synthetic pillows. The room was functional but nowhere to put a case except on the floor which I find infuriating.

The food in the restaurant was fairly mediocre although the staff were very pleasant. Just about everything is fried and, as a diabetic, there is little choice. Breakfast was a nightmare with only 1 person on duty. I arrived on the dot of 7am with a view to leaving at 7.30am. In reality, it took ages to get anything and my food finally arrived at 7.30am despite there being only 8 other guests waiting for breakfast. The chance of a second coffee was absolutely zero!

Marston - you could do a lot better!!

Parking, including disabled parking is around the back of the hotel. You then have to cross a road to check in at the restaurant as the hotel is now unstaffed. They don’t tell you this at the time of booking it’s once you’ve gotten to the front door of the hotel. For a relatively new build hotel I’m also shocked it has no lift facilities.

Went today for a carvery Sunday lunch and they asked for any allergies which i explained my dairy allergy and honestly they couldn’t have done more.
Server explained what i could and couldn’t have, then a manager let me know that all the spoons etc were being washed before i went up and then the chef took me through my options again.
Absolutely outstanding service and i was never made to feel like anything was a bother!
