Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I stayed here recently on my way from Calais to my home in France. It is just short of three hours from the ferry port, and then I had another 3 hours plus to my home, so it is a great stop-over when you are weary from driving. I stayed here once before in March 2013, but found it by accident then, in sheer desperation to get off the road and sleep. This time I had the sense to plan it into my journey. It is a truly unspoilt, 'traditional' (whatever that really means) old-fashioned French auberge. My room was very warm, the bed was clean and comfortable and I had a room which was en-suite (room 9 and 11 are both en-suite to my knowledge) - I know that many of their rooms are not en-suite, but I had a nosy into some of the bathrooms on my way round to my room and they were very clean and tidy - not particularly modern, but definitely functional.I was unable to eat here this time, as he was very busy preparing his smoked salmon, fish and cold meats for the imminent festive season - he is a traiteur and his food is wonderful (I ate here last year). So, I went to a local creperie/saladerie, at le patron's suggestion and ate very well indeed. In the morning I had the breakfast of warm fresh croissants, fresh bread, butter jam and very good coffee (€7 extra). I was totally rested and refreshed. I am ashamed to say I did not ask Mr le Patron's name, but a more charming and friendly Frenchman you would be hard- put to meet; lovely man. I shall be booking again for my next return trip, probably in February - it makes so much more sense than trying to battle on with a long drive, and feels quite like stepping back into old France.

Stopped on spec as close to the autoroute. Helpful and pleasant staff and good secure parking for a fully loaded holiday car. Room just OK, though bed a bit saggy in the middle. Right on the Main Street, so on a very hot night, the open windows made it pretty noisy. Food nothing special, hot cheese salad starter spoilt by no dressing and tired bread triangles that were neither toast nor fried. Steak was excellent however as were the fries. All in all, an adequate cheap overnighter, though definitely not worth a diversion.

The rooms are very clean and the facilities ok, but decor is very tired and uninspiring. We had a nice lunch in the garden. Parking is on site, and auberge is centrally located in town. The proprietors were nice enough, but they had a family party in the garden and sat below our bedroom window until 12.30 am, drinking and having a loud drunken conversation, showing no regard for their guests. There was a heatwave, so we couldn't close our single glazed window, which didn't suppress the noise much when closed in any case. We wouldn't stay here again. If we'd been able to get off to sleep at a civilised hour it would have been ok, as it wasn't expensive.

My Wife and I stayed overnight here 1 November. Lovely old French Hotel with a restaurant second to none. We had one of the best meals ever and the staff were very obliging and helpful. On site parking was a bonus. Well worth the visit and highly recommended.

The hosts were very pleasant but the hotel needs serious updating. The evening meal was okay. Breakfast was very traditional in that there was only bread/croissant and coffee.

Secure parking was excellent.

Bed was uncomfortable and not too clean. Staff was very friendly and food was very acceptable except my steak was terrible (tough, stringy). They are renovating outside but it sadly needs more money spent on the rooms and furnishings. It's very tired. Enjoyed the ambience of the hotel but the room wasn't really acceptable. Liked the people.

An impromptu stay on a motorcycle trip from London to the South of France - passing through Brionne we decided to call it a day after driving from London, called in and requested a room. Immediately noticed the extremely friendly staff who were happy to help. We weren't looking for an "all the frills" hotel so the basic and extremely clean room overlooking the courtyard was perfect for the price. Dinner outside in the courtyard enabled more friendly staff and the family to smile, wave, greet and generally ensure we were looked after. Dinner was EXCELLENT - Big plate of warm salad with lardons and poached egg, fresh prawns with garlic, steak and frites, good local cheese board all washed down with local wine. Extra care was taken to ensure garden umbrellas covered us adequately when it started to rain but we wished to stay outside enjoying the view of the ruins and the warm evening. Breakfast was also delicious. Nothing is too much trouble for the lovely people here - take your best school French and with their school English all will be sorted with nods and smiles. Eat in! Highly recommended!

There are only two hotels in Brionne and the Auberge du Vieux Donjon has the ideal location right in the centre of the town. It is however better known for it's excellent restaurant.
There are 11 bedrooms, most of which overlook a quiet leafy courtyard where meals can be taken if desired. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped, also good value for money.
The building itself dates from 1713 and is of course fully modernised. There is a secure locked car park. Dogs are welcome.
The business is family run by a group of very pleasant and helpful people. A good place to stay if you are visiting the delightful village of Le Bec-Hellouin, nearby.

Magnificent setting, super friendly and welcoming staff, excellent value for money as well as the dishes prepared. In addition, easy parking with a large car park right in front. Don't hesitate to stop there if you're in the area.
