We ate alone in the pleasant dining room and could not understand it. The bar was full but there was no-one in the restaurant. The food was good local produce and the chef was clearly talented producing good lamb and fish dishes. We ate pretty well and enjoyed the experience. We were there at the start of September so perhaps the season had ended

My 17 year old daughter and myself stayed for 2 nights at The Spiggie and we will definitely return on our next trip to Shetland. The propierters are warm and friendly and the room clean and comfy. We slept well and enjoyed a good hearty breakfast with plenty of cups of tea!! We ate at The Spiggie our first night and had lovely fish and chips and I sampled some of the local Lerwick brew.
A lovely place to stay with beaches and scenery within walking distance.

The positives first, the chef seems to take justifiable pride in what he is doing. The food is pricier the other places where we dined, but the evening dishes we had ranged from fairly good to great.

All this was completely undermined by the hotel side of things - proper cleaning was definitely not on the menu. There were tissues under the bed in the room from previous guests and dead insects around the windows and behind furniture. The spectacular view of the loch was marred by the murk on the window pane. All this sounds picky, and generally you can forgive a quick whip around with the hoover in a cheap hotel, but it wasn't so cheap and it got worse.

Then the bathroom. This didn't appear to be a case of just one proper clean being missed. There were two pictures in there coated in thick dust. The vanity mirror was coated in some kind of hair trimmings. A different collection of hair adorned the shower unit. The sink had caked on dirt, so that it looked grey until we cleaned it ourselves and brought out the whiteness. The floor had a vast range of hairs and dirt, including brown speckles around the toilet. At dinner I'd also noticed there were crumbs on the table even though we appeared to be the first people in there for the evening. The same crumbs were still there in the morning too.

We reported the lack of cleaning in the bathroom to the owner on the night we arrived, who was apologetic but unfortunately did not do anything about it. We checked out the next day, having spent a miserable night and leaving the room much cleaner than we found it. On reflection we wished we'd had a plan B and left on that first night.

It seems a shame as we had been recommended this hotel by friends who had previously had a good experience, but luckily we found much better value and thoroughly enjoyable alternatives elsewhere.

Thank you for your feedback and the fact that you got something positive from your unfortunate experience. Obviously, the comments on our housekeeping and our response are extremely disappointing. I have already written to you personally, and the person responsible also apologised in person. I fully investigated how it came about the the housekeeping was not finished in your room and the room was not double checked which is our normal procedure. There was no slacking or intentional short-cutting. The housekeeper made a genuine error and did not complete the work before leaving. I have made some staffing and procedural changes as a result of your feedback. I am also extremely disappointed that your feedback to us at the time was not acted upon immediately. In terms of room pricing I would like to comment that you booked a family suite which is more expensive than our Kingsize double rooms which are competitively priced for a small country hotel. It is often a surprise to visitors to find hotel prices are comparable with some major cities. However, this is largely to do with our location and the significant add on costs of transportation to the islands which filters through every product or service available here. Additionally, our season is much shorter than other UK tourist locations and consequently, we have only a few weeks to recover the costs of running a small hotel. You make a fair point and one which I think other travellers should be aware of. Finally, we take Customer Service and feedback extremely seriously. This incident has affected me and my team more than you can imagine. As a team we just celebrated being ranked #1 in Shetland by TripAdvisor but before we did that we talked about this incident. It is extremely tough to maintain a 5 star feedback rating but this incident has also taught how one mistake can be so costly. So whilst it has been a painful lesson, it is one that we have learned from.

Stayed here a week which is plenty of time to get to know the place.

The location is remote but there is a good view of the loch and a very sandy beach nearby. A good base for visiting the architectural sites like Jarlshof and Mousa Broch.

Very much a small country Hotel so don't expect luxury. An evening meal is an experience though. The helpful young lads that take the drink orders always have a smile. Michael then comes and talks to you about the food, island life the tribulations of running the place and why the 'birders' stop coming in July and come back in September. Later the chef appears to discuss island life the food etc. All the meals we had were well prepared and presented. Better than most similar places. Wine was fine but the choice was limited and I am not sure individual bottles for single glasses is the best way to go either for them or the guest. A better quality red and white 'house' wine would probably be a better and more profitable option.

Fresh fish choices offered daily were a bonus as were the desserts. Breakfast was fresh cooked. For those that like a light breakfast tell them to go easy on the portion size!

Our room was smallish but we only use the room for crashing at the end of a tiring days so was fine for us especially as the bed was comfortable.

The hotel is popular with groups of walkers and wildlife watchers as well as locals celebrating special occasions and as all meals are individually cooked by a small kitchen staff it is best to plan eating before or after such a group. Michael usually suggests the optimal times and is invariably right.

They feed left-over toast to the Shetland ponies they keep in the field opposite and there are some wonderfully lugubrious sheep which is the view from most rooms

Definitely not somewhere to go for fast food or if you are sniffy about wine. If you like somewhere a bit quirky where the people are friendly and accommodating and with a lovely view as the sun sets give this place a try. I will try to post a photo taken as the sun set on one of the sunnier days.

We enjoyed our time there.

The hotel gets good reviews and we enjoyed the hotel bar and restaurant which were excellent but unfortunately we stayed in the self catering lodges, ad excision we regretted.
The Lodges do not meet the same standard as the hotel and are in need of some investment. The quality of the furnishing is poor, for example the beds are old and worn out. We thought that this poor standard of self catering accommodation had ended years ago.
The lodge has four beds but insufficient crockery and glasses for that number of people. The kitchen equipment was minimal and looked like it came from a second hand shop and the kitchen has a soiled, stained carpet. The kitchen did have an electric meat carving knife - very useful! The kitchen table was so flimsy you could not lean on it and was just about big enough for two people.
The bathroom is dated with a mouldy bath and the shower that is a tube off the bath taps that is difficult to adjust.
While travelling around we visited the self catering accommodation at Sumburgh Lighthouse, clean, modern, well provided and cheaper than Spiggie.

Thanks for your detailed feedback and sorry we didn't know about your concerns at the time. I appreciate it is quite some time since you stayed but I did take onboard your comments and some were more difficult to fix than others. However, the lodge has now had a complete refurbishment with new heating, flooring and plumbing. so I certainly hope we can meet the same standard in our lodges as we do in the hotel.

We stayed here for two nights. It's a nice wee hotel and the staff are very friendly. The room was comfortable and clean, although the bathroom needed a new floor. The hotel is an old building so the soundproofing between rooms is a bit lacking.

For breakfast everything is made to order so it's not the fastest service, but this is Shetland, nothing moves very fast. The breakfasts were very good, though.

My only complaint was regarding our bill - we were charged the balance without being present to check the bill, which we couldn't anyway as we weren't given the bill, even as we left. Repeated e-mails and phone calls to try and get an invoice (after we were home) were ignored. I had to send a relative to the Hotel to get the invoice sent. This isn't really acceptable, and is the reason I have only given the Hotel a rating of 3 out of 5.

This is probably the friendliest hotel that I have ever stayed in. Added to this, it has a wonderful and quiet location overlooking Loch Spiggie and the sea but only about 15 min drive from the airport. My room was very comfortable and well-appointed and the food was excellent. Wi-Fi is available in all the rooms. I enjoyed the three days that I spent there and can thoroughly recommend this hotel as a good location for exploring Shetland

We spent around 4 nights at The Spiggie hotel on a recent trip to The Shetland Islands, and loved every minute of it. It was friendly, welcoming and extremely comfortable. The staff were fantastic, as was the food and the service...we really didn't want to leave! The location means that there are loads of really lovely walks right on your doorstep...an after dinner wander down to Spiggie Beach was a favourite - I really miss not being able to do that! A massive thanks to Keith and all at The Spiggie - we really can't wait to come back and see you!

Hi, This chalet is adjacent to the Spiggie which can be accessed for meals which would be charged at cost. During the summer months however, I can only let the chalet on a weekly basis from Sat - Sat. The cost would be £495 for the week which is inclusive of linen and electricity. Further details can be accessed from the Spiggie website under the 'self-catering' tab. Sorry that Trip Advisor (TA) does not allow me to include the link in my response but you can access through details found on TA Kind regards, Keith

Hi, sorry our rooms are all upstairs. I do have a chalet at ground level but this is a let out on weekly basis if that is of any interest. Kind regards, Keith
