Nice, relaxed and informal. Excellent as base for hikes in the surrounding highland area. Very quiet, I slept like a rock. If going by car east-west across southern Norway, e.g. between Oslo and Bergen (using the E134 road), this is about midway, but a little off the E134. I recommend this road as at least as scenic as the main road( E16, Rv7) across Hardangervidda. Maybe take the very scenic road around lake Totak, through Arabygdi?

+1
We stayed at Rauland Vandrerheim for two nights as we visited Rjukan and the mountain Gaustadtoppen.
The hostel is nice, the rooms are simple, but clean and newly rehabilated. Not much places in Norway where you can have a double room for less than 1 000 NOK, but here it is possible. And a good breakfast is included.
Normaly they also offer dinner at ok prices. We had one dinner there, and the food was good.
As the hostel is situated beside a branch of the Telemark University, you very often can find folk artists, both in music and crafts, having breakfast with you.
Next to the hostel there is a collection of old Telemark farm houses. And also a museum with statues made by the well known norwegian sculptor Dyr Vaa.

Geografical close connected to a branch of the Telemark University, but an independent hostel, it offers simple, but newly touched up rooms with seperate bath for under 1000 NOK, breakfast included. That's a good deal!!
You can also have a good dinner at the hostal.
If you are lucky you can meet a lot of norwegian folk artist there, who uses the Akademy for short time courses.
Rooms have a nice view to the mountains of telemark

The room we had was somewhat freshly renewed. It was nice and clean, and had a new bathroom. The room did however feel a bit "uncozy" with its white bare concrete walls. But the sleep was good. The communal TV room could do with a little redecoration.
Breakfast selection was basic but very tasty, and a big plus for our stay.
