Rapa, Jim, Juk and the rest of the family really look after their guests. We have been coming here for years and it each visit it gets better and better. Several room options - from rustic garden and ocean view bungalows; and the newer superior poolside rooms. Rapa and her staff run an excellent beach club with plenty of loungers, cocktails, beer, and home-cooked Thai specialties. The beach fronting Utopia has a deep swimmable bay. For a low-key relaxed holiday, look no further! Looking forward to returning again late summer.

This place is heaven! Relaxed, friendly, absolutely worth your money, and with nice Bungalows. The little restaurant offers the best Thai Curry in the World. Been there 3 times now and if god allows will come back for 10 more times.

We didn’t stay at the hotel but came to this place to enjoy the sun at the beach. The staff is AMAZING. They are super lovely, make jokes and take care of you. The only bad thing is that we found this place at the end of our holiday so we didn’t have enough days to spend there. If I ever come back to Koh Samui I will definitely go to there.

What a welcome. The family that owns this place knows about customer service. Top rated for me.
Good and drink is great. . Fab massages too.
But it comes back to the personal touch - kind and considerate. They know we will tell everyone that comes here to visit!

Open friendly welcome, nothing was too hard, very trusting and family run. Attentive and kind. Massage on site which we did every other day and totally feeling the benefits! Good Thai simple food, especially the vegetable spring roll! Would definitely recommend it.

The fact that the staff and owner took great care of me, the linens were constantly changed and room perpetually scoured without me having to ask, and the close proximity to the everything.

In all honesty, Utopia Resort is not the poshest of hotels, but the service was definitely 5 star. Every single time I left my room, and came back, my bed linens had been changed, fresh towels had replaced my used ones, all bathroom surfaces were scoured, shiny, and spot free, and paper products were constantly replenished, as well as bottled water. I know for a fact that I dragged in more sand than there was on the beach, yet there was never a speck of sand after my room had been made up. The owner is lovely, and took the time out of her day to speak to me, and many other guests, to make sure we were doing ok, and to ask if there was anything we needed. The location can't be beat! Utopia Resort is right on Lamai Beach, and is in the midst of all the local bars, massage spots, and restaurants. For the price, this resort truly wins my vote. It feels very much like being amongst family while staying there. I would stay there again.

We love this place so much that we have stayed here 3 times since June 2007.

June 2007 - we were recommended to stay in Lamai Beach by some friends and checked the Lonely Planet for some ideas about accommodation and picked the Utopia as it sounded ok. We rocked up and chose the cheapest room available as we were backpacking and were on limited funds. After 2 nights of not sleeping as the fan wasn't enough to keep us cool, we upgraded to the Super Deluxe Room which had air con and hot water. True luxury for a bargain basement price. The resort is located on the beachfront down what we would consider, the quieter and nicer end of Lamai Beach. What absolute bliss...waking up each morning and walking down to the beachside restaurant for our breakfast before heading off for a swim. We didn't want for anything. We ended up staying for over a week - well over our two night plan. The food was great and the location superb - what more could you want for?

May 2008 - headed back to the Utopia for another two nights and requested our same room as before - Room Number 7. Another blissful time and nice to see that they had built a new reception area which looks very professional. The receptionist remembered us from the previous year which was really lovely.

August 2008 - back again and this time with all of our family in tow as we got married in Koh Samui. We booked 6 rooms for our family and they all raved about the place. They are already planning their trips back to the Utopia. My Dad who is very fussy and usually goes for 4-5 star hotels, thought the Utopia was fabulous and believed that we had found a little gem.

We are firm believers in you get what you pay for and if you want a luxurious beach stay then this isn't the place for you. We just love the fact that we are right on the beach and that "our room" is comfortable and spacious for a very cheap price. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and we will be returning again and again.

Thanks Utopia.

After 4 weeks Thailand, I ended my trip at Lamai in Utopia. To be honest, this accomodation is average. Not good, not bad, just average. The bungalows a build in pairs or tripples and therefore different. Mine was basic and old, but clean, with AC and TV, but who needs TV in paradise? The location is good, strait on the beach and fairly quiet, but in walking distance of shops and eateries. No Pool, but a clean beach with free sunbeds. The garden around de bungalows is tropical, full of flowers and absolutely beautifull.
The management at checking in (streetside) wasn't very friendly, but the staff at the restaurant (Beachside) was wonderfull. It was a real pleasure, having breakfast viewing the beach and sea. All and all I stayed at better places for less, but it all depends on wat you're used to. Lamai is (a bitt) more expensive and more touristic compared to other beach resorts in the southern islands (Samui, Phangan and Tao), but still is a nice place to spend some days. Just make sure this isn't the only place you stay in.

Nice and simple huts just a few steps from the beach and main street, but still very quiet. Good breakfast included. On the beach they provide free deckchairs and wi-fi. The cocktails are just amazing. I recommend everyone on budget.

Is there a safe and hair dryer in each room?
Answer from JoannaAndCaitlin
Swansea, United Kingdom199 contributions84 helpful votes
in my room there was no safe and I didn't find a hairdryer either. I was told that you could put money in the front desk safe but I didn't bother with that as my friends staying at the Jasmine let me use theirs. I read in this weeks Grazia ( Jennifer Anniston on cover) that there is a new backpacker place on Lamai Beach called I hotel ( I think) . it is back from the beach a little bit. I saw it when I was walking from town to the beach and it looked pretty cool. doubles £9 a night.
