Got a room on the 3rd floor, very tired and not very cozy. Discovered that the window had a severe crack/was broken at the top and there were shards of glass in the window frame. Wasn't offered a new room until I asked for it. The new room - in the basement - was brand new - so new that there was neither TV nor soap in the bathroom. Also missed a "salon" where you can relax with your travel companions. The food, on the other hand, was fantastically good, almost so good that it made up for the tired facilities.
The hotel is beautifully situated with a great view over the water.

A stately towering old building, the hotel is about a 4 minute drive outside the city centre. Its past as an orphanage is non-apparent, apart from the stories told by the staff.
Speaking of which, you'd be hard pressed to fint a more accommodating hotel staff anywhere. In contrast to regular ol' buffet breakfasts, yours is served personally by the owners of the hotel (the bacon is to die for) at the time of your choosing.

The commodities are simple, but effective. There are no TVs in the rooms, but a massive flat screen in the common area. Here you can also find a fridge to put whatever food or drinks you might want to bring to the hotel with you, as well as coffee, tea and a microwave.

The room is up to standard. Most noticeable in my room were two images of Little Steven, as well as a bed so massive and soft that I felt like it would swallow me up.

All in all a most excellent experience.

A staff that really gives the impression that just you are welcome! The hotel itself is undergoing renovation and it is probably time, although I hope that it retains its distinctiveness and does not become another chain hotel. Large and airy room with good beds, but sparingly with light and difficult to adjust the heat. Also missing a TV without it being a lack. The bathroom was old but large. The breakfast was very good, but with a limited selection. Still enjoyed the incredibly nice view from the dining room for a long time. I can't wait to see the finished renovation.

We were met with an empty reception. Rang the bell which is supposed to call the receptionist - but the recipient of the call was then left at the reception. So we had to go to find a person who could give us information.
Was met by a nice man who gave us the key to the room and welcomed us.
No info on when breakfast was or check out.

We unlocked the room and were greeted with a cot inside the room as well as trapped air. The beds had been pushed away from where they were supposed to be. It was not washed up nor was it washed/cleaned.
We thought we might as well make the best of it as we were moving on quickly.
Moved the cot away, there we found a coffee cup underneath yes. Moved the beds back where they were supposed to be and there was more rubbish under those beds.
We cleaned up and closed the window, put down our luggage and had to wash our hands. The sink was clogged and it had not been cleaned. Fair enough.
We had to move on, so we went downstairs and told about what had happened to us - but no problem, because if only this could be fixed while we were out eating, then we just want to keep the room.

"No, you change rooms." Okay, move the luggage over to the other room myself (not a big deal, but some service would have been nice with a not so lucky first impression).
The room was much bigger, the beds were still not made up and towels hung a little on the shelf - this is going well.
At least it was fresh air and not a cot.
Tested tv, it only had Youtube as display. No user manual for how to connect streaming services or how the TV was actually set up.
The sink here was also almost clogged, so here it had to be carefully drained.
Insulation hung from the wall by the shower in a crack between the linoleum floor and the wall panels.
The shower had either a warm or cold setting and the water pressure could well be said to be on the lower side.
The double bed was two single beds that slid apart if you approached the middle.
Aesthetically, a very nice walk and a real goodfeel on the outside of the building.
Maybe hang the pictures inside the rooms properly instead of putting it along the floor and on a shelf.
And replaced the lampshades that are broken.

The next day, we go down at a quarter past 10 to hear where breakfast is. "It was finished at 10 o'clock". Yes? Ready breakfast on a Sunday at 10 o'clock... Sounds strange that you don't inform about it in any way. Hot tip, people like to sleep longer in hotels than at home.
It cost NOK 200 extra if we wanted to postpone check-out. Even if we chose it, the door was opened twice by employees who squealed just as much each time.

All in all, a bit inexperienced but nice staff.
Get proper routines in place, fix up all such little things in the rooms - then we'll be happy to make the trip again.

A very nice hotel, situated just outside of Notodden. The rooms are a bit outdated, but with good beds and very clean. Very nice staff and good food, although limited selection during COVID 19. Perfect location for next blues festival at Notodden.

If you ever going to Notodden for a visit you just have to stay here. It has everything you need for relaxation; great rooms with good beds, stunning view, good food in a great dining area, a good bar with many, many kind of beers.
All this toghether with some great people working there make the stay unforgettable.

This hotel is in a great location in Notodden, a small town in the Telemark region. The main reasons you'd come to this area are the Blues festival, the nearby Stave church (largest in Norway), and the canals. If you're coming for the Blues Festival, you'll want to be in Notodden so this is definitely your place, period. If you want to be in the region in general, I'd recommend you consider this hotel as your choice of home base for exploring the surrounding area.

The price is low for Norway. The room we stayed in was huge. Of all the hotels I stayed at in Norway, the room we had at this hotel was the biggest and most comfortable one. The hotel was clean. Breakfast was included and was very good.

I could spend hours explaining the odd set of circumstances that made us pick Notodden as a destination on our trip to Norway and even more time explaining why we almost didn't get to stay there. Point being, it was very lucky for us that we ended up in Notodden and at the Brattrein Hotel.

If I had to travel to Telemark again, I would spend more time there and I would spend all my nights at the Brattrein Hotel.

Finally, it seems like they've done a lot of work more recently to improve the hotel and I believe they're doing more. So, I expect that this hotel will only get better.

The best choice for a stay in Notodden. Very good food. Charming staff. Not central but in nice surroundings with great view. Very good for meetings. Parking is good. This building has an old story worth checking out, say no more. Bikers - enjoy this instead of camping in Notodden.

The hotel is located on the outskirts of Notodden. There is plenty of parking and a view over the lake and surrounding mountains. The hotel room was spacious with a sofa, seating, desk and two wide single beds. The room and shower room were clean and pleasantly decorated. The hotel has a large, well furnished lounge and complimentary tea and coffee are available. The hotel has a bar and restaurant although only the bar was open when we stayed serving a limited bar menu. the breakfast menu was good with a range of hot and cold foods. I would be happy to stay there again. There are many interesting places to visit in the locality including the Kongsberg silver mine and the Rjukan heavy water plant.

We were a group of ca. 30, aged 25 to 75, who stayed here for half a week, for a seminar. The location is nice, with a large park, and benches where one can admire the somewhat mountainous area and Lake Heddalsvatnet. My room was clean, a bit basic, but with shower and tilet, like the rest, and wifi. The staff is very smiling and friendly, and not the least, forthcoming. They took good care of us. The eating at the hotel is in general very good, and we got both local dishes and more hotel standard food, but everything of great quality. Also, the conference facilities are nice.

There's a nice walk (approximately 2 km - 30 minutes) to the town centre. Notodden has great surroundings for hiking, cycling, and skiing (the Lifjell area, the Blefjell area, and Mount Gausta near Rjukan (1883 m). There's a swimming hall, and within short drives there are many attractions, among them Norway's largest, 800 years old, stave church, Heddal Rural Museum (Heddal bygdetun), the Museum of Norsk Hydro (industry), the Telemark Art Gallery, Telemark Sommarland in Bø (amusement park with water activities), and the canals of Telemark. Another "Norsk Hydro-town", Rjukan, with its heavy water-history from WW2, is reached in less than an hour.

Built in 1924, the hotel itself has an interesting history, as a formerly in-company training site for Norway's then largest industrial company, Norsk Hydro, whose main product at the time was fertilizer, sold worldwide. This company was founded at Notodden in 1905, by Sam Eyde and Kristian Birkeland. Eyde and the company more or less built 3 towns in Norway (Notodden, Rjukan, and Eydehavn), and contributed substantially to the expansion of several others.
