I stopped here back in the 80's whilst doing the Coast to Coast walk. My wife and I have just done this epic trip again, and I'd have to say that this place hasn't changed too much.
We had just the one night here, having walked from Robin Hood's Bay, so by the time we arrived, having walked 19 miles in the rain, we were sopping wet, and cold.
We got a warm welcome here, and a decent [and warm] room. Our wet rucksacks, boots, and coats were taken down to the drying room, which was a great benefit.
The pub was warm, the crowd [mainly walkers and cyclists] were nice, the food we enjoyed in the evening, and again at breakfast, was well cooked and tasty.

All of the staff were friendly, but a shout out to Andrew, the cheery lad who checked us in, and Kim at breakfast. So I'd still recommend this place after 30 years since my last visit. The rooms aren't posh, perhaps even basic, but when you're walking then your needs become different, and a drying room, a warm pub and bedroom, and good food make it a must for anyone passing through. And this pub is ON the Coast to Coast route, so a great place to stop.

Arrived at 3pm and everything closed although website stated open from 12pm. When we eventually got in were told no chef and limited menu and not even advised of cost when given options. Ordered wine with dinner and not given a wine cooler. The fire in dining room had a thick layer of dust on it. Our room was very small but functional and beds were spotless although shower very grubby. Needs much more attention to detail.

We booked this as a last minute stay to meet up with friends who were caravanning nearby. As we pulled up it did look a bit tired however really warm welcome from the staff there. Our twin room was quite cosy overlooking the car park but the beds were clean and really comfy and it was really quiet . Our friends met us for drinks and food and on recommendation from the staff 3 of us had the fish and chips and one had steak and ale pie and we all really enjoyed it . Breakfast the following morning was also good , ordered the night before so all ready for us at time we chose. Good value for money

Stayed here on recent Coast to Coast walk, when asked to top up a pint of of beer the smirking barman said just get it down your neck. Later after we left discovered we'd been charged £68.00 for 10 pints of beer. Rip off our what

Dirty mouldy shower cubilcles in rooms we stayed in

However the food was good both evening and breakfast

The pub looks very rundown when parking in the car park. Paint peeling and wood rotting.

We were allocated a room on the front of the pub. Good size room and all tea/coffee making equipment supplied. Unfortunately the toilet and shower needed a proper clean (see photo's), and the wooden toilet seat replacing. We did not use the shower, because of the grime..

Food was ok, but limited choice of drinks on sale.

Stayed here whilst on holiday visiting the area. A bit refurb would probably help, but as we're defo not snobs, it suited us just great. Nice location to tour the area (on foot or driving) staff were 1st class, from the youngsters at meal times, the lovely lass at breakfast, Kim & Katrina & Claire in the bar, and you'll get a great craic and story or two with Neil the gaffer. If you like good old traditional pub life, and friendly people, you won't go wrong. Meals were all fantastic and big portions, and Neil will sort you out with extras at breakfast. On a personal note (and I realise covid plays a part unfortunately) I would like to see stools at the bar, it was that sort of place where you could get a right good natter with staff and locals alike, but being sat at tables restricts this. Many thanks to all we spoke to.....

As mentioned by others this is a great looking cation for anyone walking the coast to coast and is generally the penultimate stop. The room was adequate but on warm evening with the window open you could work out what was on the menu from the smells coming in. The food is good pub grub and the staff worked hard delivering good service with a smile. Breakfast was good as was the packed lunch provided.

Stayed as night 2 of a backpacking trip.
Room was fine, front facing seem quieter, our friends had a rear facing one and there was some kind of generator type noise til 4am from outside
Food was lovely on evening.
Breakfast good and plenty to choose from.

The rooms are a tad basic but clean and very comfortable. They were also made available to us ahead of the check-in time which was appreciated. The hard-working landlady was doing everything she could do to keep guests happy including helping with us with bags to our rooms and giving us some snacks so we could make an early start the next morning. We had an excellent dinner in the evening in the nice spacious dining room.

Yes this place looks a bit scruffy as in the paintwork and decoration, but this place literally saved our holiday after being let down by another bnb who double booked us, the staff went above and beyond to help us, the bar was well stocked and the breakfast was delicious. Just like to give the young lady who dealt with us a gold star (unfortunately I cannot recall her name but she drove a pick up and has alot of dogs at home) she worked so hard and was always running round doing something but would go out of her way to make sure we were ok, she really is a great asset to the place. Thanks for a great stay guys 👍🏼 10/10
