I have just come back from Tigaday, spent Xmas there, and I wanted to self-cater as there are so few restaurants in the town. I got my own apartment on the third floor, complete with bathroom and fitted kitchen (not kitchenette) for 30 euro a night. There were 4 bedrooms, but 3 had been locked, as I was on my own and only needed one, which still had a double bed. Overall, the quality was excellent and cleanliness was impeccable. The kitchen was modern and reasonably well kitted out. The service was efficient and discreet, and they came to change the bed and empty the rubbish every 2 days. I struggled a bit with the hi-tech ceramic electronic hob, but the owners kindly came and explained it to me. Unfortunately, hardly anyone in the town speaks a word of English, so you will need a phrase book or decent Spanish, otherwise you'll be struggling, believe me. I was delighted to find the post office just next door, a great supermarket across the road, a bar on either side and the ferry office next to the supermarket, closed only on Xmas day. There was wifi in the apartment, though the signal was weak. The furniture is minimal, but there was a roof terrace too, which was a pleasant surprise. There was also a bit of noise from the bar downstairs, but the key is to keep the sliding doors closed and the curtains drawn at night. On a different note, there is very little to do in the town other than frequent various boring bars, which are generally empty in the main and not particularly inviting. The shops and cafes are OK, though they don't really cater to tourists. So if you find postcards, they're likely to be going yellow and curling at the edges. There were more German guide books to the island than English ones and maps were few and far between, but you can find most things you need if you look hard enough. For 30 euro a night, this was excellent. But be warned, the buses are few and far between, esp. over Xmas and on Sundays, and you really need to hire a car to get around. I didn't see one place in Tigaday to hire a bicycle, and it's a pretty steep climb to get up the mountain and across to the other side. Also, note that Tigaday faces north, so you get the billowing clouds of mist clinging to the mountain till about noon most days, and it gets cold again in the evening. If you want the warmer temperatures at Xmas, stay in Tenerife, or explore the south side of El Hierro perhaps. If you want to get away from it all and enjoy creating your own entertainment, go for it.…
