Just returned from Molyvos and stayed in the Marilenas, please see a list of positives and negatives.
Positives - Molyvos utterley charming, pretty, uncommercialised and typically greek. Absolutley stunning harbour, pretty houses, fantastic sunsets- perfect. Restaurants all on a par with each other but really enjoyed the Sea Horse, Captains Table and Tropicana.
Marilenas pool - lovely.

Negatives- 25 minutes to supermarket and another 10 minutes into town/ nearest taverna. A courtesy bus is provided however the times are not always compatible for a holiday maker ( last bus being 10 p.m).
The proprieter has major issues with holiday makers ( she doesn't like them) and is not very approachable. Not the usual lovely greek hospitality that we are used to. (not even a welcome drink just a grimace)
The apartments very very basic, self catering facilities limited (I suspect this is so that folk use the hotels bar and restaurant).

We are not normally people to moan and we still had a lovely holiday, the town of Molyvos far out weighed the negatives of Marilenas Hotel. Luckily we landed on a week where we met some lovely people, the weather was fantastic and we managed to bag one of the the best rooms with a view. Try to request rooms 130 to 137 if you can they are the best views by far. The hostess is sat on a goldmine and comes across as if she is not bothered/of little interest. Such a shame. We will almost certainly go back to Molyvos but we will give Marilenas a miss.

First of all - Greek accommodation is basic. Beds, bath, loo, fridge, and a couple of cooking rings. What more do you need? You're on holiday!

The Marilena is basic, but it's cleaner than most Greek hotels, and (many English ones), comfortable, and the owner (Katerina) and her family genuinely can't do enough for you. Treat them like people rather than servants, and they will go out of their way to help. I once ordered a tuna sandwich for lunch, and they'd run out of Tuna, so the owner hopped on her motorcycle, and went to the supermarket in town to buy more. That's service.

Rooms are cleaned top to bottom every day except Sunday, including washing down all the floors, cleaning the bathroom, and making up the beds. I've stayed in UK hotels where you don't get that much cleaning done. You also get fresh bedding and towels etc twice a week, which is extremely unusual for Greece. Towels etc are sometimes a little worn, but they are clean and fresh, and the staff are lovely. One or two of the pillows are not so good, but if you just ask they'll change it for you. The pool and surrounding area are cleaned daily first thing in the morning.

Remember that the hotelier barely scrapes a living from your holiday booking, and without people spending a little money at the hotel, for a meal etc, they won't have the money to improve things. The menu is very good, pretty varied and equally as good as, if not better than many of the places in town. The views from the verandah while eating are unbeatable, sunset over the sea next to the castle, lit at night.

This is a hotel I have visited several times, and I regularly meet people there who I have met before, or they have been before and stayed at Marilena, and also people who have stayed elsewhere on the island and would always choose the Marilena over other hotels. And so would I.

This is the worst hotel I've ever been to and I have done many in my life. Don't be fooled by the pictures. The rooms are a joke, nothing has been changed since de 70's. Everything looks cheap. There was mold on our mattress and many bugs in the room because there was a big space letting them in at the bottom of the door. The cleaning was done quickly and poorly. On top of that, we had no hot water most of the time and the toilet made a terrible noise for thirty minutes each time we flushed it.

Ok. So all of that was terrible and on top of that, the people who worked at this hotel were not professional at all. They had no respect for customers, especially if you are a woman (that's called mysoginy I think..). This is what despised me the most about this place. When you pay for an hotel, even if it's not fist class, the least you can do is to have respect and to be kind to your customers. Unfortunately, this was not the case here.

So, for all this reasons, this is the worst hotel I've even been to and I would'nt recommend it to anyone, not even to my worst enemy.

This was the second time we had stayed at the Marilena (also stayed here in 2008) and our third visit to Lesvos and to this end of the island. Molyvos is not a big town, planning permission limits the building of hotels etc and so manages to remain fairly traditional. However, I've never been there in August when I guess it will become more like any other high season holiday destination. One of the things we like about Molyvos is the rich mix of European visitors. We have found that Brits are in the minority as the resort is favoured more by Greek, Dutch, Scandinavian, French and Belgian holidaymakers, all using English as the common language.

Having read the other reviews may I point out one or two things?

Firstly, in my experience it is most unusual to have an electric kettle in self-catering apartments as the Greeks tend to boil water in a small, jug-sized saucepan. I've been visiting Greece and the islands for over 20 years and have never had a kettle as standard (in Sivota one year we could hire both a kettle and a toaster from the apartment hotel).

Secondly, since the introduction of the Euro, Greece is no longer a cheap destination. Where retail prices were concerned, the conversion from drachmas to euros tended to be purely moving the decimal point (if it was 450Dr (about £1.50) for a greek salad, it became 4.50Eu (about £3.50) but Greek wages were converted to the nearest cent causing the cost of living in Greece to rise dramatically. Come forward in time to the current global economic problems, you'll know that Greece has severe economic problems and that VAT is 20% and ALL food is subject to 9% VAT. All this has contributed to the rise in prices in restaurants, bars, supermarkets, etc. Meanwhile, the average wage in Greece is around half that of the UK.

Lastly, please remember that if you are contemplating a visit to Lesvos, you will be visiting an island in the Aegean Sea, just off the coast of Turkey with a long, hot summers so expect the range of insects to be more, how shall I put it? exotic. 'Big wasps' are common throughout Greece at the height of summer and, if you read any of the many tourist guides or surf the 'net, you will find that there are scorpions and snakes on Lesvos although I have never seen a scorpion and the only snake I've seen was a dead one. If those pesky little black flies or mosquitoes are a problem, nip down the supermarket and buy a 'plug-in' insect zapper, and if your apartment is on the ground floor, I'd be inclined to keep the doors closed to deter wandering cats, let alone burglars or other wild life.

But let me get back to reviewing this Aparthotel ... The Marilena is rated as 2 star+ by First Choice so you have to accept that what you are going to get IS basic. Don't expect anything fancy but what you can expect is very friendly, welcoming and helpful staff, a clean apartment (the cleaners came in every day but Sunday), towels and bedding were changed every other day. Our apartment was upstairs and just along from the bar and on-site taverna. We had a good sized balcony with great views and most days, a welcome breeze and no, it wasn't too noisy because the bar closed at midnight and anyway the window and door was double glazed. It got quite hot while we were there, not dropping below about 27 at night and so after 3 nights, I bit the bullet and paid for the aircon. I agree, it wasn't cheap at 5Eur a night but what price do you put on a decent night's sleep? For me, it was worth every cent.
When we were there, in late July, the pool area was clean and the pool itself maintained regularly. However, some of the pool-side sunbeds and umbrellas needed to be replaced and although functional with a bit of DIY, might not have been as adjustable as they could have been. We paid just under £250 each for 2 weeks - at that price just what can you expect to get???
The food in the Marilena's on-site taverna was fine, nothing spectacular although I can recommend the spaghetti bolognaise made by Grandma - really, really good. A cold beer and a Greek salad made an excellent snack at lunchtime away from the pool. Perhaps a B-B-Q evening once a week would have been a bonus and something they might consider in the future.
The courtesy bus service was really useful as while we were there, there was a 48 hour taxi strike that lasted nearly 2 weeks. Walking into town wasn't so bad (about 1.5 miles) as it's gently downhill, but walking back was not so enjoyable! If there were too many to fit on the bus coming back, then a second trip was made so that no-one was left behind. Most times, we planned our evening to fit in with the bus, the exceptions being when we went to the open air cinema - wonderful experience but films begin at 9.30pm and end around midnight so a late night stroll home was the only option (films change every couple of days, and for those on a budget, it's 7Euros a ticket, ouch, making Orange Wednesday back home doubly attractive!) . In case you're wondering, films have Greek subtitles.

Car hire wasn't cheap (never is in the Greek islands) but we hired one for 4 days in the middle of our stay. I admit that the beaches on this island are not the best in Greece but there are some good ones, if you know where to look - do your own research before you go, don't rely on your resort rep who only wants to book you on an over-priced, and sometimes crowded trip! We found some glorious beaches west of Petra and to the east, around the coast is the the delightful Skala Sikaminias and also Tsonia (the latter not easy to find but worth a visit). You can get to Petra easily by bus from Molyvos and there are regular boat trips from the harbour to Skala (weather permitting). To get to Tsonia, you will need your own transport.

Hope this helps other would-be holiday makers.

The thing that most impressed us about this hotel was the excellent view we had from our balcony of Molyvos & the castle, and the sunset on an evening. I noticed not all guests were so furtunate though and wouldn't have been so impressed if we'd been stuck in one of the rooms facing the back that have no view and no sun.
The hotel is about a 1 mile walk from the town and the nearest shop, but it's a really nice walk down a quiet country lane that we enjoyed doing. And if you're not up to walking that far there is a hotel bus that runs into town & back a few times a day.
Our room was a bit more basic than we expected. The self catering facilities weren't really adequate - no tin opener, no veg knife, no kettle, only 1 pan, only 1 bowl, no plates (just saucers), and only 2 tiny cups.
The room wasn't as clean as other Greek hotels we've stayed in, but it was acceptable. For the first 3 days we didn't get any clean towels, but after that we got clean ones every day and the sheets were changed once during our 1 wk stay.
I think the Marilena is good value for money and it's 2 * rating is about right for the standard of accommodation you get. If you're more interested in spending your time exploring Lesvos than relaxing in your room then you would be happy with this hotel. But if you like a certain level of luxury & comfort you may be disappointed.

We have been here over the summer and er had a great time. The owners are very Nice en helpfull people and they are always working to make Your stay as Nice as possible. They are great with the kids (not that we have any but we saw how they treated them). The owners were truely sorry to see the guests go after their stay. We felt so welcome. The food was okay and the pool was very Nice. Maybe some day they can replace the beds at the pool? But overall we had a lovely stay and we would defenately go there again!

After our wedding me and my wife were itching to get away somewhere so we booked a last minute deal to Molyvos. Knowing absolutely nothing about it other than it being on a greek island, we flew out a couple of days later.

After a really long transfer from the airport (about an hr and a half) ours was the last drop and first impressions weren't great. The room was really basic, set up as a twin room and because of the style of bed we were really able to put them together, the shower had no wall bracket, our view was of a tree and we couldn't get the air con to work. Not good.

Anyway after a chat with the owner and a beer by the pool, we'd relaxed a bit and got a bit of perspective on things - it was a damn cheap holiday after all - air con was now working and we ventured into town.

And wow, what an amazing place Moyvos town is. Fantastic restaurants, bars, bakeries, shops and the greek people are amongst some of the friendliest I've ever met - so, so nice.

The Marilena is by no means a luxury hotel but with Molyvos town on your doorstep the chances are you'll use it simply as a place to lay your head at night and for that it's absolutely fine.

Other pluses are a big pool, friendly staff, decent food (if you're spending a day poolside and fancy some lunch) and because it's pretty small, you'll probably make a few mates whilst you're there.

Would love to go back to Molyvos one day and whilst I wouldn't rush back to the Marilena I certainly wouldn't discount it if I was on a budget.
