Wanting to get away on a sweetheart holiday only, our eyes fell upon Molyvos 1 on Lesbos. I must admit I was a bit reluctant at first because of the photos - old style. But situated on the beach and the former reviews being so good we decided to make this little boutique hotel our destination. And what a lovely surprice. The staff greeted us with open arms and had everything ready for us. In literally 10 mins they had us checked in and on our seaside balcony. The palm trees in front will give you some privacy, so it is perfect.

The décor is somewhat old. Never mind that, your time is spent on the beach and in the old harbour or Mithimna (Molyvos) town, in which the Molyvos One is very close by.

The beach (right outside the door) is actually a public beach and the Greeks themselves will use this during the week and especially on Sundays. Molyvos One have a part of this beach where they have service and sunbeds (2,5€) and umbrellas (1€) pr person pr day. This keeps the beach private, with some day-visitors from other hotels. It is a beach with a stony brim for 1 meter, hereafter the most pleasant white sand. So bathing shoes is a must, and is acquired for less than 10€ in the nearby main street.

The Molyvos town is right behind the hotel slightly uphill, where the main road cuts through the town. Here you will find at least 3 ATM from major Greek banks, car rental and the small supermarkets, where you will find everything you need (Gin, tonic and Mythos, and you are all set ;-).

We rented a car from Nicos close by the hotel. Super service and cheap. A small hyundai for 2 days was 38€, including insurance, free kilometer and all. No deposit needed for me, because as Nico remarked I was not a youngster, so he gave me an old people discount ! ;-( hmmm ;-) for the first time in my life. This proved to be fantastic. The little car with aircon, took us to the northern part of the island the first day where there are the most stunning views, and small hidden beaches, where we had lunch. Day two we took the south west part and had a very very good day in the small towns, and Antissa where the men had the coffees in the shades of the linden trees. We of course drove to the petrified forest, which is a must. Lunch in Sigri. Lovely shallow beach close by.

Eating out is easy. Many cafees and Gyros joints for lunch. The Olive Press is a neighbour hotel, where you as guest on Molyvos One is allowed to use their pool, and which have two very good options - the restaurant with modern terasse decor and lounge music, and the pool bar, which actually is a boat ;-). Nice terrace there as well.

Evening dinner, is also easy. Dont go before 21 or 21.30. For the Sansibar book table in advance. Best and most modern. Many other options along the harbour and up in the old town towards the castle.

So - all in all. We highly recommend this hotel. Dont go for the décor, which is a bit Mediterranean dark wood 80íes. Go for the beach, the quiet breakfast on the terrace, the absence of children, the cleanliness and the atmosphere of kind Greek hospitality - and of course the very cold Mythos beers in frozen glasses, which is called for every time the Greek goddess Mythos whispers from the sea, Myyyyythooooss, which is ever so often ;-)

Lovely location right across from a small tree lined beach. Rooms were small and cluttered with old furniture and bedspreads that have seen better days. Air conditioning barely worked and wifi would only work in reception and the garden. Everything was clean and there was a balcony overlooking the garden and the sea. The garden is lovely to sit in and relax. Breakfast is basic with cornflakes, boiled eggs, cheese, yogurt, tomato, cucumber and bread. Breakfast never changes. There are lots of restaurants with views of the sea near by. The staff of the hotel were lovely and very helpful. I am not sure I would make this hotel my choice again even though the accommodation is very good value for the location.

Great location. Just by the sea. You can watch a beautiful sunset from the porch (palm trees block the view from the balconies). Small pebbly beach. Sea was too wavy when we were there so we had to go to far beaches by car unfortunately. Hotel is very old. Rooms are very small but clean though. We slept tight three days in a row. Breakfast is sufficient but the same everyday lacking too many choices. Hotel is waking distance from the center to all the dining places. Staff is friendly and helpful with customer needs. Overall we had a nice time.

My wife and I spent several nights in Molyvos in mid-April and it is now one of our favorite places. The town is one of the most romantic and picturesque places in the world and mid-April is the perfect time to visit: The prices are cheap, there are very few tourists, and the weather is warm during the day and cool at night. If you have a car, it is very easy to spend a few days in the area while staying in a hotel in Molyvos. We stayed in a small hotel (~45 euro/night) near the old Olive Press. We had a balcony facing the water and walked to the old port every night for dinner (about a 10 minute walk). The port is full of small hotels and good restaurants and you can sit outside at night and watch the fishing boats come and go while you eat fresh fish or drink Ouzo.

We spent a full day just in Molyvos (the castle is small but gorgeous) and the adjacent town of Efthalou which has (very) hot springs located on the sea. You can park your car near the hot springs and walk for several miles on the dirt road next to it, enjoying the views of Turkey and the sea on one side and the pastures and mountains of Lesvos on the other side.

Other places that we visited near Molyvos: the church on a rock and the cute little beach town of Petra, the incredible mideval monastary on top of the mountain near Andissa, the petrified forest, the castle at Sigri, the aqueduct at Moria, and the flamingos on the Gulf of Kalloni. A great place for a picnic is the ruins of Ancient Antissa. After you eat, you can climb around the ruins and wonder how old the pottery shards that litter the ground are.

If you are looking for a romantic place to spend a few days, you won't do any better than Molyvos.

We have stayed in Molyvos 2, a property owned by the same company as Molyvos 1, but in a quiter Eftalou. The place is PERFECT for families. We stayed in two connected rooms; a double one for the parents and a single one for our 11 year old. Both had excellent airconditioning and a nice view of the sea and an orchard. Both rooms had refrigerators, the double room also had a microwave and two cook tops. Both had beautifully renovated bathrooms. The hotel is right on a beach (extremely clean already and they also remove sea grass every morning), but what is even better is the hotel's wondeful pool with warm sea water. This was a big hit with our family.

We had half-board with breakfast and dinner. The dinners were delicious. They have a local cook who prepares excellent local dishes. The food was flavorfull and light; meat, fish, wonderful cheese, best salads, beans. They switched the menu on the spot for two vegetarians in our party and they were very happy too. We ate lunches in restaurants (a nice Taverna a minute walk away from the hotel, also very good) and in Molyvos when we felt like sightseeing.

Location: Quite, NO night clubs and noise! A 10 minute bus ride to Molyvos if you want to visit the beautiful fort (well worth visiting), markets, and nice restaurants. Another perk of the location is a thermal spring just a short 3 minute walk. The Molyvos fort is a perfect lesson in European history. The location and the hotel was perfect for us: when we wanted to visit the town, we took the bus. Otherwise we had the perfect quite place with a pool and wonderfu staff.

A Seattle family.

The only thing worth about this hotel is the location.... Otherwise it does not explain the price charged for a hotel that has reallyyy small rooms, not properly cleaned with extremely bad matress. Worst of all was the airconditioning that did not work at all and the attitude of the receptionist answering to our complaints that it used to work to the previous guest...really?? Is that an answer??i would not recommend at all this hotel... It only takes advantage of it's location and does not offer even the basic.. The bathroom also was very small, with a really bad smell and broken door handle. Not to mention that no parking is available. Would not recommend this hotel at all and worse even stay again...

I did not expect much of this hotel judging by other reviews. But it was a perfect base for exploring Molyvos, and it is the first hotel to the seaside, we could have a quick swim in the evening and shower in the room a minute later. And the beach closest to the hotel has a blue flag, which we can confirm. There are pebbles, but when you get in the water, there is a lovely carpet of sand. And we saw a lot of fish too.

The staff was friendly, it is a family hotel, which we liked. We also had wi-fi, air-conditioning and the refrigerator with no extra charge. This is a breakfast only hotel. You have a lot of choice like classic coffee, tea, breads, cheese, salami, butter, jam, boiled eggs, cereal, honey, homemade marble cake and cookies (yummy), homegrown tomato, cucumber and feta cheese and also their traditional greek yoghurt. I liked the breakfast very much. You can eat your breakfast on the outside porch, overlooking the sea.

And now, a few things they could improve at the hotel:
The room was clean. But they could have a better system for the maids, maybe signs with please clean our room/come back later. If you are still in the room, you cannot expect her to come later in the day, by our experience. And their english is very basic.

When we came the first day at about 12 a.m., we had to wait for our room until 2 p.m., so we went for lunch and left our luggage at the hotel. They do not have a special room, where you can store your luggage.

General warnings for Lesvos and Molyvos:

The sea by Molyvos, Petra and Anaxos can be a bit colder, if you are used to the warmer seas of Rhodes and Kos.

When you come to Molyvos, you have to know, that everything is up the hill. Because our hotel is by the sea (close to the hotel Olive press), you might have to drag your luggage down a hill and then the last day, up the hill, to get to the main road, where the bus can pick you up (the roads downhill are quite narrow).

The streets are ofcourse cobbled and up a preety steep hill, so girls have to be carefull with their high heeled shoes. Altough we've seen some who handle it very well. I recommend tennis shoes or something like it.

At night, the road to the small harbour with lots of restaurants, which is downhill, is not lit at all (need some solar street lights I guess), so be carefull. A lot of cars and a village train go there.

VIllage train can take you from Molyvos to Petra and Anaxos (and back ofcourse). Sometimes it runs late, because of the narrow streets in Petra and Anaxos. It can also take you down the hill to the old harbour and the castle at the top of Molyvos.

Lesvos in the 3rd largest island of Greece. If you want to see more of it, take a rent-a-car. The bus service is not very adapted for the holiday makers (not a touristy island) Molyvos is 65 km away from the airport. Expect a 1,5 hour drive to your hotel. But you can visit Turkey, which is very close by sea from Molyvos.

Lesvos airport is seriously small. They call passengers of the certain flight, when they can pass through customs inspection (on the other side there are 2 duty free shop - one regular and one with local products, which are also smaller than usual).

Overall it was a nice holiday, but it could be better.
We could hardly wait for our vacation at the beginning of this month. But were a bit curious, what is Lesvos going to be, since it is not as touristy as some other islands (which is not always a bad thing). It turns out that the city of Molyvos is very charming with its traditional market and narrow road uphill, where you can see where the citizens of Molyvos live and work. Since it is UNESCO protected, you won't see any large, ugly all-inclusive hotels, which is great.

My husband and I were really disappointed with our stay at this hotel. For some context, my Greek husband and I travel frequently to Greece and often stay in simple Greek rooms (as opposed to larger run hotels) because the location and quality of stay is usually fantastic with Greek hospitality. This hotel was the worst Greek room we have stayed in. First of all the positives: it is a beautiful building with a nice patio outside where you can take breakfast and sit with a drink in the evening (although the hotel has no atmosphere so very few people do this). The hotel is very close to Molyvos which is just gorgeous and has lots of restaurants and tavernas for a night out. The negatives for us included:

- It is well within earshot of the rowdy bar 'Congos' that our Greek friends on Lesvos say has been around before all the hotels were built so they can't complain about the noise. This meant that you can't sleep with the patio doors open (you could hear the sea if you did this) but instead had to have them closed with the aircon on (sore throats/freezing in middle of night) etc etc. There is also a lot of noise along the pathway outside as people return from nights out as it is along the main pass through.
- The breakfast is just dire. Usually a greek breakfast will include loads of fresh fruits and lovely lovely greek yoghurt and honey/gliko and all manner of breads, jams and pastries. This really is done on the cheap and includes orange cordial (not actually orange juice) and stale bread with some awful cheapo jams in packets. The cornflakes are soft as they have been left out for I don't know how long. The milk is just the worst as is like tinned carnation milk or something - anyway you can't stomach it on either the soggy cornflakes or in the coffee/tea.
- The rooms are very small and basic. Literally enough room to fit 2 single beds. We had to put our suitcases on the mini balcony
- The cleaning standards are poor. We complained twice to the reception as the cleaners had once neglected to clean the toilet and left the bins unemptied. They really do the bare minimum.
- The beach that they advertise at the front of the hotel is not great. It is very narrow and those large pebbles that cripple you on the way into the sea (everyone was wearing those jelly shoes which you'll definitely need). The worst part of this beach is that Molyvos 1 actually charge you for the use of the loungers (the rest of the island does not charge if you buy a drink from their establishment) and worst still they charge their own guests for the use of the loungers. It is 2.5 euros each and the drinks are another 4 euros. This was the most expensive beach experience on the island. We would recommend instead going to Petra or the others along the north coast which are more sandy and bigger with better facilities.
- No parking. There is very limited parking at the hotel and we found a big car park at the top of the town which made our lives easier - the hotel should advertise and advise guests to use this then their cars don't get stuck in the small cobbled lanes. Be advised, you will need a small car if you intend to drive around Molyvos.

Overall this hotel is overpriced - it was the most expensive hotel on our 3 weeks holiday to Greece and also the worst value. They clearly trade off revenue from agencies that do package deals for tourists from Holland and Germany - there were no other 'direct' holiday makers there...bit of a shame with this hotel because it has all the potential to be so much better but the management clearly value greater margins over quality of service. If you want to stay in Molvos have a look at the rooms which are off the main front of the beach and situated behind Molyvos 1 hotel - we walked through the grounds of these and they were beautiful.

Molyvos I is the best place to stay in Molyvos, Lesvos. The owner of the hotel Suli is a very sweet woman and very helpful. I've been there a couple of times and always stay there. It's close to the harbor, the castle, the shops and the taverna's. Their beach is also good. You can get massaged by a chinese couple when you're sunbathing for a reasonable price.

After viewing reviews we were enticed to stay here. Our welcome was mostly demondtrated by ingoring us. Finally they wandered out the front greeted us with a bored "yes". After asking about room rates we questioned prices quoted here on TripAdvisor and were firsty told it couldn't be this hotel, then he said he would not match the price as it was wrong. Customer service 0! Honestly 0!
