“A top ecolodge for family, active adventures and local culture” - National Geographic magazine Milia is located in a mountainous and environmentally sensitive area of Western Crete, at the prefecture of Chania and the center of Kissamos province. 30 years ago when we started “flirting” with the idea of making an alternative and sustainable project, implementing the terms ecology and tourism in it. Above all, visiting Milia is an experience worth having… Milia means “back to the basics”

My husband and I visited Greece — and Crete— for the first time this summer. A friend of a friend told us she had the best meal of her life at Milia Mountain Retreat, and when I explored their site, I knew we not only had to visit for a meal but also stay there. We spent 3 wonderful, restorative days at Milia, hiking, eating phenomenally delicious food, enjoying the deep serenity and power of the mountain atmosphere, taking a wonderful cooking lesson and getting to know the fantastic staff, who all manifest the heart and soul of this incredibly special place. If you require a marble bathroom- this is not the place for you. If, however, you would like to travel back to a time where the air was cleaner, the food unadulterated, fresh and healing, and the pure water you drink…

We have done a number of eco-sustainable stays as a family in the states, Ecuador, and now Crete. This settlement is wonderful. Relaxing, great staff and absolutely hands down the best food we had during our month in Europe.

I was excited to visit Milia Retreat after seeing it on a television program and reading about it online. I was visiting Crete from Australia - so its a big trip. Staying overnight wasn't an option, but I wanted to try the restaurant I'd heard much about. The website said bookings were advisable so I emailed, four weeks in advance, to ask if a booking was necessary. I was told - yes - so I naturally assumed we'd be expected. The drive to Milia was longer and required more caution than we'd expected for a drive to a restaurant. Great care needs to be taken on the mountainous road. When we arrived, the restaurant was almost empty; yet no one showed any sign that we were expected, or expressed interest in how far we'd come to try their fare. No information about the produce or…

First, the trip there, along a mountain road with breathtaking views, lets you know you will be staying somewhere special. The rooms are in a very old stone complex on several levels with walkways connecting. You feel like you've entered a different country there -- surrounded by trees, on the side of a valley with great views across. The food is extraordinary, very local and delicious, with outdoor tables to enjoy the view. We took a lovely short walk exploring both sides of the valley, and there are several longer walks. The staff person who greeted us, Despina, was super nice and helpful.

If you are looking for an off the beaten path, warm, authentic, and most of all RELAXING place to spend a few nights in Crete, then Milia Mountain Retreat is the place for you! My wife and I stayed at Milia for 3 days during our 2 week honeymoon and it was a highlight! The food is amazing. A modern take on traditional dishes. Some of our favourite meals during our honeymoon. The service is warm. Despina was incredibly gracious in welcoming us and answering any of our questions. Tassos, one of the owners, was very kind and welcoming as well. Definitely recommend doing a cooking lesson with Tassos...it is much more than just a cooking class, but also a lesson on culture and the Greek lifestyle. Thank you Tassos! We also highly recommend doing one of the many mountain hiking…

We were excited to vitsit you. You were a destination on our list six months before arriving to Crete when we palanned our trip. We arrived at 11 o'clock after 7 km drive from main Road on our trip from Chania to Elofonissi beach, with two children. No Wellcome from you. Only info that lunch will be after 1,5 hours. You offered no coffee, no drinks, nothing. I guess our money was not desired. If you ever come to Finland, I will Make you a greek salad with olive oil and pie. I will be prepaired.

We stayed for 4 nights here and didn't want to leave. The "village"has been sympathetically restored and it's a pleasure to stay here. We had a small room which was simple but comfortable. We enjoyed trekking into the hills from the doorstep, we saw lots of goats but not many people! The food is outstanding and the restaurant is a comfortable area to sit at lunchtime and in the evenings. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We would like to give a special thank you to Despina who gave us lots of information and was genuinely kind and friendly...she is a big asset to the team. We would love to come back just as soon as we can. Best wishes from Sarah and Paul.

We were tipped about Milia at our previous mountain retreat in Southern Crete (Thalori), and it was absolutely amazing. The location is georgeous and the 14th century stone houses are very romantic, including with a working fireplace and balcony. The bed was great. The hosts were warm and quite helpful. However, the absolute highlight of Milia is the food, which is so good we have no words for it. The "Ravioli Homemade" with slow cooked goat is without a doubt the best pasta I have ever tasted. I will come back for more (and you will too).

We had the opportunity to spend two nights and 2 full days at Mila Retreat and we loved everything about it. The room was cozy with a fireplace, the whole settlement is just like the photos but with the smell of mountain herbs and wood burning in the fireplaces. The food was amazing, with cretan flavours and local products. The people were lovely making us feel like home and gave us tips for hiking. We did two hikes which were very well signed and both had amazing views of the mountains around. We were also lucky to see many flocks of Griffon Vultures and a few ravens. We absolutely loved everything about Milia and we would recommend it to other guests! This is a must experience!

We had 11 in our touring party and stayed for 2 nights. It is a beautiful retreat high in the mountains. The road is quite narrow and windy but you get beautiful views. My only advice is that you stick to the main roads and don't take the back roads. Also definitely arrive in daylight hours. We had great service and everyone was friendly. The food was awesome with a good selection. The rooms had fireplaces which were beautiful in winter. Wi-Fi was a bit patchy in some of the rooms. There are a lot of stairs and the surfaces are uneven so probably not suitable for wheelchairs and would be a challenge for someone with walking difficulties. Wish we had more time there.
