First time at the hotel and overall it was great. Good rooms (60 odd steps up a steep hill though), great pool and a nice beach area just over the dirt track road. But … there are things I’d do differently. The hotel staff are fabulous - friendly, helpful, just lovely. The Mark Warner staff weren’t- especially to non MW guests. Rude and doing very little most of the time, it was easy to form the impression that this work was beneath them. Smiling certainly was. They had a couple of get-togethers at the pool bar whilst we were there, where we had to sit through some of the cringiest speeches being made by people who had no talent for public speaking (the resort manager being the worst - literally worthy of a sitcom on how to make the room feel awkward). We booked bed and breakfast and used it 3 times in a week - cheap meats and cheeses, mouldy gf bread, the only bad salad produce we tasted, poor, cheap fruit selection, big serving dishes of yogurts and jams which the flies loved and were full of bits of other food from people’s spoons. Really horrid coffee too. A coffee at the pool bar was much better, however lunch wasn’t great. Everything was from the freezer, bar the salad. Ate the only bad souvlaki of the trip there. Sad to see the fish was frozen in a place where you could hear the sea across the road. We didn’t try dinner - but reports were that it was ok, but pretty much the same every night. Given how close the village is, and how brilliant and affordable the restaurants are there, I think you would only eat at the hotel for convenience or if you had kids. The mixture of independent bookings and coach loads of MW guests isn’t a happy one. Tbh a lot of them seemed to have forgotten to pack their manners, especially when ordering drinks. Room only with a sea view and this is a little gem.

The Mark Warner Aeolian Village resort is situated on a beautiful beach, 10 minutes’ walk from Skala Eresou on the Aegean island of Lesvos. Skala Eresou has become a major holiday destination for lesbian tourists, it is the birthplace of the poet Sappho, in whose honour a statue has been erected in the village. . We were lucky enough to be there during the international women’s festival, which is obviously hugely enjoyable for all concerned, featuring acts such as the wonderful British singer Stars Walker as well as open air cinema, talks, walks, and a whole range of other activities. Most sports are very well run at the Mark Warner resort, including mountain and road biking, gym and fitness and tennis. Plenty of equipment and enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructors. Good mountain biking trails close by, at all levels of ability. Water sports also well run, but the wind is predominantly offshore, and gusty so not ideal for windsurfing. They also offer sailing, SUP, kayaking and rowing. Food is good quality and there’s plenty of it, if a bit samey. Staff are charming and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. Rooms are large, comfortable and clean. There is a hotel shop selling beach gear, not overpriced. Lesvos is the third largest Greek island and there is quite a lot to see, not much classical period archaeology but a mediaeval fort, a museum specialising in 20th century prints, several monasteries, an ouzo distillery, an old olive oil pressing factory and a petrified forest. The hotel will arrange car rentals. Skala Eresou is a very pretty little village with a few shops where you can stock up on beer and wine at cheaper prices than in the hotel, also some nice fish restaurants and a few bars serving more international cuisine, on a boardwalk looking out over the sea at the setting sun. Doesn’t get much better than that. Flights are from Gatwick, no frills Polish charter airline. The resort is two hours from the airport. Two years ago when Neilson was closed, we went with Mark Warner for the first time in many years. Comparisons are difficult to make, as both are very good in different ways. Maybe Mark Warner just edges it on customer service.

Room Tip: Rooms in the “village” are quieter than those by the pool, but some are a long walk up a steep hill

Aeolian Village Hotel 5/5 Mark Warner 4/5 Mark Warner Kids Club 3/5 We love Aeolian Village hotel. We have been coming for years. The Greek staff are all so friendly and it's lovely to see the same ones every time we go. The receptionists are so welcoming and ask how we are. George the chef cooks amazing food. My youngest struggles with food and he eats heartily every night. The pool is very big. It seems to change every year. I must admit I prefer it not the middle walkway has fully gone. It makes it easier to get in the pool. Mark Warner staff as a whole are just not as friendly as Neilson staff. With Neilson (who used to be at Aeolian Village Hotel) we would always get a smile or hello from staff even if they didn't know us. MW staff completely avoided eye contact. The tennis was good but the 2 staff didn't quite gel fully. One would tell us what to do and then the other would say it again in a different way. It was a little confusing. I still enjoyed the tennis lessons. I have to thank Holly on the beach. Without her patience my youngest would never have gone in the sea. He decided this holiday that he no longer liked any water sports. My children have done at least 10 weeks with Neilson kids clubs. The staff are always lively and bouncy. You can hear the kids club as they walk around the hotel singing (both Aeolian Village Hotel as other hotels). However, MW kids club just fell flat. The staff lacked that enthusiasm. There was no singing and laughing was rarely heard. On at least 2 occasions I watched one of my sons and his group stand about on the beach for 25 minutes whilst the kids club adult and other adults chatted. There was no effort to entertain the kids, they just stood and waited. The hour on the sea the kids club manager promised in the welcome meeting never materialised. It was only ever 30 minutes max. This particular leader spent a lot of time talking to adults rather than keeping the children entertained. My youngest sons group got changed in the pool hotel toilets a few times. The floor was often wet and the toilets not hygienic to get dressed in. Neilson never got their kids changed in the toilets. With Neilson it is always difficult to drag my eldest out of club, yet both boys told me on day 3 that club was boring and refused to attend any more (apart from my youngest who did his water activities with Holly the beachie). The timetable was more quiet activities than active ones advertised as the sample timetable on their website. Not what you expect from an active holiday. With Neilson the kids never stopped. They would always be doing something and if they chose not to join in a member of staff would be with them chatting to them. Neilson seem to understand that the kids are also on holiday so need to have fun. Mark Warner according to my eldest was more that you had to do exactly what they said. Doesn't sound like a fun holiday to me. Our returning to Aeolian Villiage was dependent on the boys enjoying holiday club. We are gutted that the boys hated it. Maybe one day Aeolian Village Hotel will return to Neilson.

Agree with previous review,I would add it is very remote with only the local village/town about a 15-20 min walk away.So if you want to get away from it all this could be the place for you. Coach transfer well organised at least 1.5hrs twisty nearer the resort.Car hire could be a good answer not any pushy organised trips/excursion. Also you must love the water or you may get bored.

We travelled there after cancelling our trip to Rhodes with Mark Warner due to the fires. I was very sceptical, but soon all our worries were put to rest. I do not normally write reviews this long but everything I wrote is worth mentioning. Location: The hotel is in the most beautiful location surrendered by the sea and hills. You won't see significant buildings around, which is excellent. The village of Eressos is just a 5 min walk from the hotel, and it is a nature walk as you will see tortoises near a river. The village is authentic, with a vibrant night live that our teenagers enjoy. The Island enjoys a cooler temperature as it is the north Aegean, so from 30oC to 35oC is a great temperature considering what is going on in the rest of Europe. Accommodation: We have two rooms, in different areas, due to the late booking. In general, the rooms were clean, functional and the bed very comfortable. My husband and I stayed in the village, a bit of a walk from the main hotel, but the room was new, we had a balcony with tables and chairs and the sea view in the morning was beautiful. My son and his friend have rooms at the hotel building, very similar in space. We did not spend too much time in our room as we were always busy, and there was so much to do. The bed was very cosy and comfortable, the air conditioner worked well, the shower had pressure, and the hot water was always hot, that usually is not the case in other hotels. We were told this is because the electricity at the hotel is generated by a solar panel system. Beach & Sea The beach was clean and beautiful, not crowded. It was very peaceful, no people trying to sell staff and they didn’t have any motor water sports, which I really do not like. There were enough sunbeds for everybody, and I knew the hotel was at full capacity. We snorkelled and see all the nature. I fell in love with the beach immediately Food My son and I are vegetarians, and we normally struggle to find a good menu for us. The restaurant has a vegetarian / Vegan section, with plenty of vegetable protein and delicious things to eat. Every night they have a theme. My husband is a meat eater and loved the food also. We notice the farm next door and talk to the employees about the delicious food and we were told the food is produced in the hotel's farm or sourced locally, and they do not use pesticides for their crops. I was very happy about the food the downside is that I weight myself this morning and I am 2 kilos more. ahh, and the vegan hamburger in the pool bar was also delicious. Activities There are plenty of activities for everyone, Mark Warner has a wide range of water activities with new equipment. We paddle-boarded, Kayaked, and my friend us to take us around in the Catamaran. It was beautiful, and we were visited by wild dolphins one morning while sailing. Sailers and swimmers do not have to worry about motorboats getting out of control the only one were used by the water sports staff that carefully goes around making sure everybody is safe. I learned to paddle board, and the staff and the beach boss were there to help me and give instructions; they were all super nice and safety conscious. We have nice walks on the beach and around the hotel. They have Kids Clubs for all age ranges; the kids were so happy and busy you barely noticed them. The young adults in our group were invited to dinner, where they met people of their own aged and socialise. There is a saltwater swimming pool that a lot of people use, and It looks nice but were very pleased with the beach. There are lots of activities and things to do; we did not do it because we did not have time to cycle, play tennis or padel tennis. The thing I enjoy the most is having these meals sitting at a big table with family and friends and enjoying each other's company, good food and wine. Everybody at this hotel goes the extra mile to make you welcome and happy; everything is authentic and organic. You have the sense of the care and dedication of everyone. Thank you to everyone at Aeolian Village for making our holiday an unforgettable experience.

Great location, great service and good service at lunch time, hotel rooms are clean and well maintained. Breakfast and dinner are buffet (not my favourite) so we ate out each evening in the local village which was incredibly cost effective and fabulous. 17 restaurants to chose from on the beach. You can walk there over turtle bridge in under 20 mins. Sea was clean and beach well maintained. Lovely location. Very simple hotel no frills.

Another attempt at a review as my first didn't appear. We loved our stay here, travelling with Mark Warner. The hotel itself is kept spotless and all staff are very friendly. A special mention must go to Tasos the chef and others in the kitchen - the food was exceptional. The handyman was pretty amazing too - we reported a broken shower and it was quite a tricky problem to fix, but he arrived with minutes and spent an hour mending it, fixing it completely. Our maisonette suit was very well cleaned each day too. The room itself was lovely, with wonderful sea and mountain views. The upstairs bedroom was huge with a four poster bed, and the aircon very effective. There were also shutters, which I love as without them I always get woken by sunrise, which is obviously a problem in June. With regard to Mark Warner, all their staff were wonderful, without exception. The childcare was especially fantastic and our 4 year old son absolutely loved all his time spent there. Meghan, his key carer, was fantastic and so kind and caring. They take the kids to the beach, the pool, and all over the resort, and the childcare area itself is very nice with lots of good toys etc. A special surprise for us was a supervised movie night for kids, meaning we could eat dinner together every night. An earlier tea was put on by Tasos, so our son could eat at his usual time before enjoying the movie. The tennis courts were ok, with some wobbles in the surface here and there, but the rackets and staff were great. I had some 1-1 tennis lessons with Hugh and really enjoyed them - he was very friendly and professional and got me back into tennis after a 30 year gap. I'm a keen beg/int windsurfer, and particularly enjoyed being able to windsurf every day; everyone down at the beach is friendly, and they carry your stuff to the water, making everything super easy. Sam especially was very nice and a very good instructor. The powerboat rescue service was also amazing - every day was an offshore wind, but they genuinely didn't mind bringing anyone back in who was struggling to get back up wind to land. My only criticism of the windsurfing was that despite there being loads of boards there weren't many sails, and even fewer with lines over 28", which is a shame given that I use 30-31" lines. Quite a few times I went down and couldn't get out due to lack of sails. On one occasion they kindly rigged me a sail with longer lines, and after my hour's wait to get out I rushed out on the water, only to find it was what they call a "training sail" with almost no downhaul and outhaul, hurting my shoulder quite badly in a sudden gust. Silly me for not checking - I should know better, but this side of things perhaps needs some work: more sails, bigger adjustment on lines, and care when giving "training sails" to people in strong winds. The other negative was a few near misses I had with other guests sailing dinghies - even when I was in clear sight and being sensible, or on one occasion simply uphauling and someone nearly just sailed straight into me. On another occasion I was passing an oncoming catamaran port to port and could clearly see both crew, and they suddenly swerved upwind into me. I'm not sure what can be done about that, other than maybe mentioning it in the safety briefing on day one. I don't wish to finish on a negative though, because the beachfront was very well run and everyone was always friendly and welcoming. Overall, a great stay and we're planning to return next year.

Booked though MarkWarner and everything they staff was perfect: airport welcome, waterfront facilities, tennis and guided road/mountain biking. BUT they were let down by the hotel staff - or rather lack of them leading to long queues at the bars and ancient bath/shower and no control of the beach lounger area leading to overcrowding by noisy freeloaders AND the transfer bus with ineffective aircon leaving us sweltering on the 90 minute transfer SO MarkWarner really need to sort out their subcontractors who are undermining their brand
