Detailed Reviews
Patmos is called the “Holy Island” and that title is easy to appreciate given its importance to the people of Greece and indeed to the world’s Christian community and to other peoples of faith. For any visitor to the island it is impossible to miss its religious significance with the 11th century monastery complex that includes the cave where the disciple John wrote the Book of Revelation. For good reason the island is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
But Patmos is also a refuge for those who wish to truly take a break from life and enjoy the beauty of some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. As an island Patmos has managed to keep the balance between the infrastructure needs of visitors and the gentle rhythm of an island community. For those familiar with the Greek islands, suffice to say that Patmos is a deserted island when compared to the LA like frenzy of Mykonos.
I had the good fortune to stay at this hotel on my recent visit to Patmos and it would be hard to imagine a property that does a better job striking just the right balance between providing a comfortable and indeed at times comforting place to stay and the natural beauty of the surroundings. Petra Hotel and Suites is a jewel and one of the most beautiful properties I have experienced in years of travel. Its design is both elegant and unpretentious, open to the sky and the sea and while there is a swimmable beach a 5 minute walk away, if you make the “longer” trek, a mere twenty minute walk, you will find yourself on Petra Beach with its umbrellas, chaise lounges and a family run concession offering a curated menu of offerings for every taste, from Negronis to fresh fruit with yogurt and honey. And just like the Petra Hotel and Suites the presence of that family and there unassuming concession stand seems to underscore the quiet of the place rather than disrupt it in some garish manner which is all too commonplace.
Speaking of culinary enjoyments, the breakfast at Petra Hotel and Suites is truly exceptional. And speaking of family businesses, the family at Petra Hotel and Suites are a remarkable hands on presence. The owners and their son are kind, thoughtful and truly caring. Their staff is outstanding and from those who keep the property sparkling clean to the staffers who greet, welcome and serve, it would be hard for me to imagine an environment that is more supportive in providing its guests with both comfort and space.
I first read about this property a year or two ago in a very high end travel journal. While the article and the pictures did justice to the aesthetic of this property, the surprise for me was an ambience that complemented a truly beautiful destination that served this traveler as a perfect escape.

The Petra is a delightful hotel located in Grikos bay with stunning views and a perfect location halfway between Skala and Hora.
The white structure in perfect island style made us feel immediately in the right place.
To welcome us a tipical wooden door, a refreshing homemade lemonade and the smile of Mrs. Petra, the owner who, together with her husband Kostas, manages this small luxury hotel with only 11 rooms.
We stayed in a Deluxe room with a small and delightful terrace overlooking the sea and direct access to the pool, spacious and equipped with all comforts and with a large bathroom with shower.
Impeccable cleanliness and five-star service. Several times a day, towels are changed and the room tidied up. Linen change every day. The staff is very courteous and ready to fulfill any request. In the pool you can spend real moments of relax and take advantage of the fast service to have a coffee, a snack or an aperitif while enjoying an unforgettable view of the bay. The beach towels made available both in the room and in the pool and provided in abundance can also be used to take them to the beach.
Then breakfast is all you could wish. Set on marble and wrought iron tables with white placemats and crockery and served with care on the splendid terrace overlooking the sea. Fresh orange juice, white and wholemeal bread with butter and various homemade jams, two types of breakfast cakes accompanied with honey and fresh fruit coulis and then every day two different proposals, one sweet and one salty: a fabulous cheese pie (the best we tasted in Patmos and prepared by Mrs Petra), tortilla, cereal crumble with red fruits, bruschetta with tomato and feta, a selection of local cheeses with a unique flavor, avocado and sweet potatoes, quinoa salad. To all this, you can add either Greek yogurt with local fruit or eggs cooked as you like.
In addition, the hotel also offers a reservation service for restaurants, excursions, car and motorcycle rental, boat tours and wellness packages through a dedicated link that can be used from the moment you book your stay. Finally, the special hospitality of Mrs.Petra and her wonderful family who with courtesy, kindness and good manners made our holiday exciting and unforgetable.

Dear Vera, We can’t say enough to thank you for your truly amazing review! We are incredibly happy to hear that you had such an amazing experience with us. Our aim is to offer our guests a home-away-from-home that reflects the unique essence of Patmos, and our team, which is like family, is always eager to provide top-level service and personal touches in every aspect of your stay so that you can enjoy a truly authentic experience. Ms. Petroula and Mr. Kostas have poured their heart into creating a hospitality experience that is hard to come by, and along with their only son, Christos, they are elevating The Petra to even greater heights with a variety of special additions to delightfully enrich your visit to Patmos, as well as ensure that everything is made easy and worry-free. We are also glad to hear that you really enjoyed our breakfast offering. Since our philosophy revolves around authenticity it also extends to our breakfast experience and we have put a lot of thought into representing the true diet of a Greek family, with most of our ingredients being locally sourced from Patmian suppliers and local traders from across the country, and the majority of them prepared from scratch by our hands and served at your table. Thank you for your wonderful words and we hope to welcome you back again sometime in the future! Kindest Regards, The Petra Team

The Petra is the perfect destination hotel on Patmos; an island both desolate and beautiful.
The small boutique hotel is a family run business; Lovely hospitable people.
The food is delicious, and all homemade. I had dinner there my first night. I started out with the entire breakfast service the next day which is included. They were kind and let me take with me that which I could not eat. One cannot drink the water, but they make bottled water readily accessible at no cost.
It has a very nice deck and pool area which overlooks Petra Bay. They serve drinks on the deck from the bar downstairs. A small beach is just down the street and there is a little outdoor bar and dining there as well.
The rooms have their own outdoor seating area and are spacious and attractive. All the art is by a local artist by the name of Rocco. The rooms have a coffee machine, kettle, and refrigerator as well as robes. I did not partake but spa treatments are available on site.
Albeit a long walk uphill the Monastery is in walking distance and from there one can walk to St. John's Cave. The walking gave me much more of the feeling for the place.
The fees for the Taxis vary with the driver.
It's as little as $5 from the ferry harbor, and as much as $10 to or from the hotel.
I stayed three nights arriving around 2pm from Kos by ferry and leaving from there by afternoon ferry for Rhodes. My only regret is that I didn't stay at least one more night as it was a much more peaceful authentic experience then what I encountered on other Greek isles to date.

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience at the_Petra! We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the serene atmosphere of our boutique hotel and the beauty of Patmos. It’s great to know that our hospitality and our delicious mama's food made a lasting impression on you. We always aim to create a relaxing environment where our guests can truly unwind and connect with the tranquil charm of this unique island. Patmos is indeed a special place, with its secluded beauty and unspoiled landscapes offering a peaceful retreat from the more bustling tourist spots. The island’s serene environment and rich history provide a perfect backdrop for a tranquil escape. As part of this truly exceptional destination, each room at the_Petra is designed to offer comfort and luxury with stunning views. We are delighted that our outdoor seating areas allow guests to enjoy the marvelous vistas, while the art by our local artists enriches the indoor spaces, creating a harmonious blend of nature and culture. It was an absolutely disapponting experience. We arrived at 23.30, completely exhausted from the trip, and the owners kept us at the exterior terrace, demanding to prepay the remaining 50% of the whole amount, before even entering the room. There is no private parking. The breakfast was served and was hilarious, full of empty plates in our table, with jams, a syrup, honey and a slice of cake (for 2). No cereals, no milk, no yogurt, no fruits,no cheese, no cold cuts, only eggs. There was an additional cost of anything else, like 15 euros for a plate of fruits or 10 euros for a ball of yogurt with honey! The pool was very small and three adults could not swim together.
All the photos are misleading; the rooms are small, full of unnecessary furniture, no DVD player as was written, no stereo system, the refrigerator was tiny, and the TV had cable problems in the beginning. Those been said, we paid 625 euros/night. We have never felt so idiots before. Overall a hotel mispriced on the very expensive side ie huge mismatch between the expectations set by price and its site and reality.

We are truly sorry that our hotel did not meet your expectations. In the Covid era, we welcome with warmth all of our guests on our wonderful terrace rather than our lobby, asking them to sit down for check-in as they sip our home-made welcome drink – in fact, we intend to continue this policy in the future, since it feels like welcoming our guests to a home, rather than a hotel. As per our standard policy that clearly defines all of our reservations, including yours, any remainder of the room charge is due at check-in, as is the case with thousands of upscale hotels around the world. We are sorry that you felt so upset at check-in and that your initial sentiments never allowed you to settle in and enjoy our hotel and hospitality. We were always extremely courteous with you, as with all of our guests. Since we value all feedback, we would love to respond to your criticism, in hope that we can be constructive. • There is street parking right across our hotel. The walk to our main entrance from the parking spaces ranges from ten seconds to one-minute. • At the Petra, we serve breakfast at the table with plentiful of home-made delights that rotate each day, as well as a variety of dishes that come in many plates (which of course are not empty, as plenty of pictures on this forum can attest). Among many other food items, we also include two kinds & pieces of cake daily (indeed one piece per person), freshly prepared in our kitchen each day. We do offer fruit and yogurt, cheese, and of course milk upon request. All you had to do was ask our waiter for it, and of course there is no additional charge for such items during breakfast. Most of our cheese available at breakfast is hand-picked from various suppliers in Greece, including several from Patmos, farm to table. We indeed do not offer cold-cuts and upon request offer a limited variety of sugar-free cereal (oat/quakers etc), since we are committed to healthy products in our food offerings. The additional pricing on our menu, which you mentioned, reflects orders that occur after breakfast. We will ensure by talking to our staff once again that they describe our arrangement in great detail on the first day of breakfast. • The swimming pool indeed is not ideal for three adults to swim at once (but they can certainly cool off and move around simultaneously) – we believe it is more than adequately sized for a boutique hotel. Since we only have 11 rooms in total, most times our swimming pool is a private affair for our guests. • Our interior room size ranges from ~25 square meters for our basic room types, to ~35 square meters for our Suites, to ~50 square meters for the Petra Suite. • We have indeed removed DVD players and stereo systems from the rooms, as such equipment is outdated in our modern times of streaming content. We had eliminated such references in our communications, and apologize if you were able to find such information ahead of your arrival. We will certainly double-check. We also offer a standard size mini-bar/fridge as you will find in most hotels around the world, and promptly dealt with your TV malfunction when you brought it to our attention, fixing the issue immediately within minutes. Although we continue to have utmost confidence in our model of hospitality that combines luxury and amazing service with intimacy and authenticity, we are truly sorry that you were disappointed in our hotel and wish things could have been different. We certainly tried our absolute best, as always. The Petra Team

We chose The Petra for our honeymoon and we could not be more satisfied with our choice for such a special occasion. We were fortunate to have been welcomed by the owners of the hotel who throughout our stay were constantly attentive and sincerely concerned for us and our enjoyment. The Petra offers the luxury facilities and service you would expect, yet with a homey touch that makes you feel like you’re staying at a Greek family home. The food offering is excellent with changing Greek specialties being offered everyday for breakfast and lunch/dinner. Food in general was exceptional with a variety of local and international options on the menu for all meals. The service is of high quality with sincere care for your enjoyment and wellbeing. We continuously got personalized recommendations of how we could best enjoy our time in Patmos. Similarly, the boutique nature of the hotel gives you a quiet and beautiful sanctuary in the middle of what can sometime be a busy island. The nice pool and pool area give an option for rest when you’re not feeling like going to the beach. The location, a few minutes away from the main area of Skala, allows for rest and quiet enjoyment. We will forever cherish our memories at The Petra and we will most definitely be coming back.

This was one of the most memorable hotels we have ever stayed in for so many reasons. From the moment my husband, daughter and I arrived we were made to feel so welcome by Petra and Kostas and treated as extended members of their family!
The breathtaking views, stunning property, five star service and amazing food were only some of the reasons The Petra will be a place we will return to again (and again!).
Our accommodation was beautiful with so many wonderful touches that made our stay so special, for example our daughter is a coeliac so Petra had some special homemade gluten free cookies for her on arrival with homemade lemonade and some other treats for us.
Breakfast was a feast of homemade breads, sweet cakes, fresh fruit, eggs any way you liked and always some traditional greek dishes which were mouthwatering (with delicious gluten free options included for my daughter).
There were so many lovely local and traditional restaurants close to the hotel we were spoiled with choice, as well as a lovely stony beach a short walk from the hotel.
It was only a short taxi ride to the port of Skala where there were so many beautiful shops, cafes, restaurants and sights to see. We also took an early morning hike from the hotel to Chora where we visited the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse, which were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO because of their significance in Christianity and the preservation of ancient religious ceremonies that occur on the island. This was a wonderful experience albeit a challenging climb.
Some experiences cannot be captured in words but we were so sad to leave The Petra and return to Kos that if there had been any availability to extend our stay we would most certainly have stayed longer.
Thank you Petra and Kostas for a magical few days at your stunning hotel. We will certainly return.

Hi Mary, Kevin, and Molly, Thank you for your heartfelt review! We're thrilled your family had a wonderful time with us. Providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere is at the core of our values, and your kind words reaffirm that we are on the right track. We truly appreciate your feedback, and your preferences are of utmost importance to us, including dietary requirements. It was our pleasure to see Mrs. Petra enthusiastically preparing those special gluten-free treats for your daughter, ensuring she could fully savor the delightful flavors of Greece. Her dedication to ensuring your family's enjoyment exemplifies the passion we have for making our guests' experiences truly exceptional. We were also incredibly touched by the greatest compliment of all – your desire to extend your stay with us! Regrettably, at that time, we were fully booked, and it deeply saddened us that we couldn't fulfill your wish. Petra, Kostas, and our team can't wait to welcome you back to Patmos for another unforgettable experience. Until then, we send our warmest regards to you and your family in Dublin, Ireland. Many things have changed from the last time I came on holiday at the Petra as a child 28 years ago. But two things remained the same: the sense of feeling at home in a hotel and hospitality of the Stergiou family.
The Petra is not just a luxury hotel, it allows you to live a true Greek experience, from the home made breakfast to the wonderful sea view. The rooms are furnished in a homely still elegant and modern way, service is impeccable and the beach is at walking distance. Fully recommended, I will certainly come back in the near future.

It was a real pleasure seeing you again after all these years! Along with your amazing parents, we first met you back when you and your siblings were little and even from back then we had no doubt about your unique presence and character. Thank you so much for your review – we have indeed tried to maintain the values of traditional hospitality coupled with impeccable service and our adaptability to the modern times. All of us at the_Petra are reminiscent of all of the guests like you who have stayed with us through decades of our past, touched to be welcoming you again and again in the present and future (and so thankful for it)!

Amazing Place on this wonderful island.
The owner family is very friendly, we arrived in the middle of the night, the owners were there to welcome us and even had prepared a snack for us.
The view from the room and pool is great.

First, the owners and the staff try very hard to make you feel at home. Kudos to them for that.
The pool deck has a gorgeous view, and you will want to spend a lot of time there.
The location is good and bad. You are not near anything, so you don't hear any noise but if you want to go somewhere you need to take an 8-Euro taxi.
The food was very good here.
The room was a little tight, but it is Greece and not Texas.

We truly appreciate your kind words! Making our guests feel at home is precisely what we aim for, and it is gratifying to hear that you had such a wonderful stay. We were also delighted that you enjoyed our pool deck and food, as we strive to create a relaxing atmosphere and prepare home-cooked meals with care. It is true that Grikos is a peaceful hideaway with a variety of authentic tavernas and a couple of beaches within walking distance of our hotel. To truly appreciate all that Patmos has to offer, regardless of their base location, visitors typically move around the island, many times utilizing the professional local taxis. For visitors who wish to have greater independence and roam around the island, we’d suggest visiting our "More Than a Stay" section on our website for a car or scooter rental. Even though, as you noted, we are a boutique hotel in Europe and as such, we respect your view that the size of our rooms is not our most distinguishing feature, we are also certain that you would agree that our rooms are comfortable with all modern amenities (most especially some of our Suites that range from ~35 to ~50 square meters). Thank you again – we look forward to welcoming you back in the future for yet another fabulous stay! The_Petra Team

Hotel Petra is more than just a Hotel! Is like coming home. The very nice small luxury hotel with only about 15 rooms is a real family business and it´s for me like staying with friends. The rooms a very clean with nice greek style furniture but modern. The breakfast is served (what I really prefer) with home made greek specialities. The stuff is very polite and friendly. It was our second time to stay there (for 2 weeks) and we will come back next year! Thank you all for the perfect holidays, we are ab

I'm not sure where Dodecanese island flights go to from UK but there is no airport on Patmos so it is either ferry from the mainland direct or an island flight and then a short-haul ferry from there (e.g. Leros, Samos or Kos). Probably the most reliable way would be a flight to Athens, then either a cab to Piraeus port (Euros 50) or the transit bus (@ Euros 7 I think) and head for gate E2 and catch one of the ferries overnight. If you get the bus, it is a really, really, really long walk to that Gate...so despite the difference in cost, a cab would be a far less stressful start to the local journey. Compare the various lines on the net: we went with Blue Star and got a great cabin but a noisy ride - and came back with Hellenic Seaways and got a functional modern cupboard but a really quiet engine). Get a cabin on the late-night ferry if you can: sleeping in the common areas is not nice. You get to Patmos around 8 or 8.30 am and the hotel is a very quick taxi ride away. If you ask the hotel, they have a full schedule of options depending on time of year.
