Travellers' Choice
Mare Dei Suites Hotel is located in the beautiful Southern region of Peloponnese near the village of Skafidia and town of Pyrgos in the Elis region. The hotel has an eye-catching setting of nature offering a panorama of the Ionian Sea, the sea of the ancient Greek Gods, a fact to which it owes its name. The hotel overlooks a magical little bay while harmonically resting on a naturally green hillside. On the golden sandy beach our guests will come across by natural springs and beautiful rock formations as well as natural argyle. Most of our rooms enjoy unimpeded views of the daily journey of the Sun and the Moon until they disappear into the deep waters of the Ionian Sea. All that while listening to the soothing sound of the soft waves and the salty breeze touching the skin.In Mare Dei Suites Hotel each spot will give you the feeling of relaxation and quietness. A golden beach with your private sunbed, our beautiful swimming pools, the pool bar, the well-cared garden with herbs and flowers, our Traditional Mediterranean restaurant, our Spa Center and a conference room which can be transformed to one’s needs.

The first thing they checked when we arrived at this hotel was to pick up our temperature, at the reception. It was a hot day in Grece, my wife and my soon were having respectively 37.3 and 37.5. But for myself, since I was having all the air conditioning coming thrue me in the car, I was having 35.1 They refused to let us in, because of overflow temperature of my wife and soon (and they don’t know that normal temperature is between 36 and 38), but nobody said anything that I was in hypothermia. They were just saying all the time: “Don’t approach, move away. Go to the Hospital. You are sick. You are dangerous to our customer.l”. When we argue that the room was already paid, and that at least they need to reimburse us, they refused. They did not even help out for any alternative booking nor anything: they were treated us like plagued personns !

Response from Management Mare Dei, General Manager at Mare Dei Suites Hotel Ionian Resort
Responded 25 Sep 2020
Dear guests, This summer, given the Covid-19 epidemic, we are obliged by law to check on guests’ temperatures upon arrival. Our hotel complied with the hygienic protocol of the Greek state. In this difficult time for all of us we had to safeguard the health of our customers, staff and all of us. For that reason, and since 2 of your family members had a persistent fever, we requested you to consult a doctor at the hospital. We could not take the risk either for our hotel, or any other neighbour hotel as this would be irresponsible from our side without consulting a doctor. Concerning the refund, we immediately called Expedia and requested them to refund you, which they also did. We could not refund you on spot, since you reserved & paid through Expedia. The hotel has returned the entire amount to Expedia. We wish you all the best Mare dei Suites Hotel

Wanted to experience the calm side of Greece in its truest tranquility form and our stay exceeded all expectations... The boutique hotel is beautiful and well designed. The rooms are stylish, large and modern. The view is just breathtaking, I can’t even describe it, it’s like something from a movie. There is a wonderful large infinity pool where we could relax and eat the delicious bar food. Then we would stroll down to the private secluded sandy beach to swim in the warm Ionian Sea. The restaurant felt romantic - watching the sunset eating fresh tasty food and browsing the small carefully selected wines, all sourced locally. The staff were so lovely, kind and attentive. We saw a mixture of couples and families, but it never seemed crowded. We really can’t thank you enough for our stay, we have left feeling calm, relaxed, happy and recharged. We will see you soon.

Fantastic location. perfect sunset, private sandy beach, most rooms with with sea view. Due to the pandemic,we have not been informed that Spa was closed, room service only 2 x a week but no price reduction. We asked the lady owner, who wasn´t friendly and mentioned we have to complain to booking.com as we didn´t book directly. Limited choice for lunch and dinner and watch out for the wasps. We were disapointed and stopped eating there, by car there are many Tavernas close by.

I last reviewed Mare Dei in 2015. Everyone rightly highlights the amazing location, wonderful and uniquely secluded beach (I have sailed the Ionian and the Aegean for 30 years - I know what real seclusion in mid-August is like and how impossibly rare it is to achieve it even on uninhabited islands). My main emphasis on my last review was on how surprisingly suitable the hotel was for all our family: Our then 4-year old twins had an amazing time and the little children's swimming pool worked wonders, as did the wonderful sand. So, four years later, here is the update: Mare Dei has become the only hotel our family (they are English, I am Greek and we travel each year from London) wants to go to. The children now use the larger pool (quite big for a hotel of this size, has infinity views and you never have to share it with more that 2-3 other people), but everything else about the place confirms our initial appraisal. There is simply no other place in Greece (and I have been to all the major business and resort hotels in Greece from the Grande Bretagne and Asteras to the resorts at Elounda, Rhodes, Corfu, Halkidiki and the Peloponese - including the large ones further north from Mare Dei) that combines the comfort of a good hotel with utter seclusion and superb location. Over the years I noted with surprise some (very rare) criticism, most of it unwarranted - including the criticism that the place is too secluded!! Yes, the coffee at breakfast could have been better, but all hotels are careful with breakfast and all-you-can-eat margins. In that context, I value the breakfast for its variety and the attention to detail: from kalamata olives (who offer that in unlimited quantities), spinach pie and galaktompoureko (always available) to loukoumades (on some occasions - never seen them on any other hotel buffet, the children love them). Breafast is quiet varied, especially when taking into account the small size of the hotel. It is also true, as someone noted as if this was a major flaw, that the parking space, which is secured behind an electric gate well inside the hotel, is unlit at night. But it is not dangerous, it is a few steps from the actual rooms and offers a breathtaking view of the sky at night. Our children first got a glimpse of the actual Milky Way, of some constellations and of Mars and Jupiter from there. Every night, if the moon had not risen, would use the star gazing apps on our i-phones to learn about the night sky. So please, Mare Dei, keep the car park under that amazing star-lit natural night light, who wants that view to be spoiled by neon lights? The staff are amazing, and very friendly. The standard complimentary orange juice at arrival goes down well with the children as does the attention and friendly smiles they receive all day. I noted in my 2015 review how hotel staff proactively saw to it that we moved a huge parasol and turned it around so that a large part of the children's swimming pool would be in the shade: where else has one received that kind of attentive help proactively without asking for it? (though I must say, these days the parasol has been fixed to the ground further back and cannot function in this way anymore - think about this Mare Dei, offer your little visitors a shaded mini-pool, its these little things that make holidays memorable). We did have one problem in our last visit: the flush in our toilet broke down during our stay. It needed a plumber to replace a part, and this was done first thing the next morning. In the last few years we have also come to appreciate what the local area has to offer: The local village, Leventohori, has two very enjoyable tavernas with good food (the hotel retaurant is good with superb terrace views but too eclectic for our children who are cruder in their tastes, they need lamb chops etc). Katakolo offers further options and a pleasant drive in between fields as the day comes to an end. SAt-nav is highly advised for the return back at night, though the hotel is sign-posted just about everywhere within 15-20 km (last or penultimate sign has arrow faded and needs sorting out, others have mentioned in their review as well). At the end, however, other than the short 3-minute drive to Leventohori for dinner (and perhaps to Lidl at Pirgos for supermarket shopping), this is a place for a family to stay all the time, to relax and enjoy the perfect sandy beach, with the ideal swimming pool in a high quality hotel. Each day starts with a wonderful and varied breakfast with the best view imaginable and ends (here the western facing view helps) with gorgeous views of the sunset as you and your family sit at the loungers at the beach, with no one else to spoil the moment, even at the height of the August holiday. Quite simply, there is no better place for my family to stay in Greece and we aim to always travel here till that fated day ten years from now, when the children will go there own way, experiment with Myconos and Paros, before growing older and wiser and appreciate again the unique qualities of hotel and a location like Mare Dei.
