Unique Art Deco house built in 1935 lovingly renovated by the current owners. This B&B is a four minute walk from the beach and offers four themed rooms named after people who have a link with the house or local history. Breakfast is cooked fresh to order using organic and local produce where possible. Ideally located to explore the Kent Coast, countryside and the historic city of Canterbury.

Property's Favourite Review
We've just returned from the wonderful Art Deco Twentieth Century B&B at Birchington-On-Sea. The owners Kat & Spencer are the loveliest of hosts and are rightly proud of their achievement in renovating & decorating the Art Deco building.
We've stayed in many B&Bs and this is the best ever. Kat clearly enjoys hosting & Spencer loves his cooking, add to that their clear love for this property & the stories it brings. Book yourself in & you'll see what I mean.
Before reviewing the room(s) we have to mention the breakfast service in the stunning Art Deco breakfast room, we were made to feel like VIPs & nothing was too much trouble. Ingredients are from their local producers & you’ll see Kat picking whatever is in season from her own garden.
Spencer told me about a Cloud Egg that he had never cooked before & I'd never heard of (unsweetened baked meringue with yolk nested into the top). Have it on top of his herb pancake with mushrooms in sauce and you'll be singing their praises too, I could eat them every day.
Read on for a bit about our Amy Johnson room & the other rooms, which we were lucky enough to be shown.
There are four beautiful themed rooms of people with links to the surrounding area:
Amy Johnson room, Amy died when her plane crashed along the coast near Herne Bay. Kat has researched the aviator & has so much knowledge to impart.
David Bowie room, Kat is a huge fan & aficionado with many interesting stories to tell, including personal connections.
The other rooms are:
Tudor Gates room a Mid-century furnished room featuring screenwriter & former owner Tudor Gates.
Baron & Lady Carson Art Deco Suite named after the original land owners, but as you'll hear there is a lot more to them than that.
We could go on & on about how much we enjoyed the Twentieth Century but it’s time for us to return to the 21st Century.
They've got a great website twentiethcenturybandb dotcom
A big thank you to Kat & Spencer

This place is a must for art deco fans (and anyone looking for a fantastic place to stay in Thanet !)
The attention to detail is amazing, but foremost, this place is a B&B and it fully ticks those boxes.
Bedrooms are immaculately presented on various themes, whilst breakfast prepared by the host, Spencer, in his full 1920's tennis whites was all you can want, with locally sourced produce filling the plate.
We will return !

Tucked away in sleepy 1930's Birchington, but very easy to get to, Twentieth Century B&B is a hidden gem. We were here for a party in Margate and the owner, Kat, kindly arranged early check-in so we had time to get ready. The B&B is 10 minutes walk from the station, with a nearby bus stop and plenty of parking and just 5 minutes from the sea front.
This is a 1920s building immaculately renovated in Art Deco style, with furniture and ornaments to match. Each bedroom has a theme and is fitted out to match, even down to the font on the door sign. We stayed in the Bowie room which is small but priced appropriately and it was perfect for our overnight stay. We had our own large bathroom with fantastic 1970s fittings, a good supply of eco-friendly toiletries (way better than most hotels or B&Bs I've been to) and fluffy towels and bathrobes. Every area was clean and fresh.
Kat and Spencer who own the B&B could not have been more welcoming or helpful. Tea and filtered water were provided on arrival and there was fresh milk outside our door first thing in the morning so we could have another cuo. Breakfast is arranged at a time to suit the guests; some rooms can eat on their balconies or there is a small dining room with period furniture. A good choice of breakfasts all freshly cooked and with locally sourced milk, butter, bread, sausages and bacon.
Kat and Spencer clearly love their B&B and are on hand to help their guests and tell you about the history of the place. We fell in love with it too and will definitely come back - highly recommended.

Thanks Kat & Spencer! What a fab place to stay whilst you enjoy the delights of the Kent coast. This is a special b&b. Kat & Spencer have lovingly restored this cool Art Deco building and have filled the place with furniture and artefacts that go with the A.D. groove. Each room has a theme (we stayed in the Amy Johnson room) which is a nice touch. They certainly have an eye for detail and were perfect hosts. The breakfasts were made with local produce and our hosts certainly went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Thanks guys and Spencer don’t go climbing anymore ladders lol love Lisa & Jon x

We enjoyed a great nights stay for New Years Eve in the Baron & Lady Carson Suite. The room was beautiful and had every luxury and we loved the unique lovingly restored furniture and the attention to detail. Kat and Spencer are fabulous hosts - warm and welcoming and full of knowledge of the history of their beautifully restored home. We were invited to join them on the roof at midnight to see in 2020 and the new decade and it was a wonderful place to watch the fireworks! It made our stay even more special. The breakfast is delicious - fresh and locally sourced. It's a great base for a walk by the sea and exploring the local area. I would highly recommend this unique and gorgeous B&B - and many thanks to Kat & Spencer for making their home an amazing stay.

We stayed recently in the Baron and Lady Carson Room. It was a most enjoyable and comfortable experience from start to finish. The proprietors, Kat and Spencer, have made an exquisite restoration of the house, with beautiful attention to detail. The standards of cleanliness and safety were extremely high. We enjoyed imaginative home-cooked, almost entirely locally sourced, breakfasts, and also greatly appreciated the personal touches such as being offered a nightcap and piece of lemon drizzle cake. There is also the opportunity to star gaze from the flat roof of the house - with a fantastic 360 degree panorama. The house is about five minutes walk from the seafront and ten minutes walk from the shops and restaurants of Birchington town centre. An ideal base for exploring this interesting coastal area - Reculver and Margate are easy cycle trips along the coastal path.

Thank you for your lovely detailed review, great to see that you both very much enjoyed your stay in the Art Deco 'Baron and Lady Carson Suite'. We are delighted to read that you found the renovations we have undertaken to the house to be exquisite, enjoyed our locally sourced breakfast and your slices of Spencer's legendary lemon drizzle cake. It was great that you made the most of the coastal cycle paths we have in the area, as well as making the most of the clear skies during your stay for star gazing on the roof. We hope you will stay with us again next time you want a break on the Kent coast.

If you want complete rest and relaxation then this is the perfect place to be. Twentieth Century has to be the most thought through B&B I have ever stayed in. Each room tells its own story and is decorated to an incredibly high standard. If you like your places eclectic then this is definitely the place for you. The hosts Kat and Spencer pull out all the stops to make your stay a truly memorable one, from the delicious local home cooked breakfast to their amazing historical knowledge of the B&B and surrounding area. And with the beach a stone's throw down the road, this is definitely a staycation to have on your 2020 list.

We stayed in the suite, which was super comfortable, large and with a fantastic shower (one of the best rain showers we’ve experienced!). Private balcony included (managed to even have our breakfast served on the balcony on a beautiful sunny morning). What struck us is that a lot of love has gone into making sure every room is unique and has its own personality, with quality finishings throughout. Unique stay – restored art deco building, with interesting features everywhere. Well located, less than 10 mins drive to Margate. Without being “out of the way generous/flexible”, the service is still good and well-intended (this is probably more a difference in styles and personality of the host versus what we are used to). The included breakfast is a nice addition and is served with attention. Each room is different, and at each price point, represents very value (especially in high season, as the owner stresses she maintains the same rates all year round). Overall – 9/10 – would definitely recommend if you are heading to the Margate area and we would return again.

Ray thanks for your lovely detailed review, it was such a pleasure meeting you and your family. Brilliant to hear you enjoyed your stay and liked how we have renovated and decorated our Art Deco house. Fab to read that the shower in your room was one of the best you have used on your travels and you enjoyed being served breakfast on your private sun terrace; a popular option for those staying in the Carson Suite. The style of the house lends it's self to us offering a hands on hosting style. We care about our guests and are keen for everyone who stays here to feel welcomed, comfortable and looked after. We are aware this may not be what some people are used to, but it is part of what we offer here. Thank you so much for recommending us and I look forward to your return visit.

We stayed at Twentieth Century B&B whilst we were down in Margate to see The Specials at Dreamland. It is such a lovely place to spend some time, the hosts have done an amazing job on the place and are also incredibly friendly and welcoming. They were more than happy to answer any questions we had, provided restaurant recommendations and told us lots of interesting stories about the property which is clearly a labour of love. I travelled down on my scooter and wasn't too keen to leave it on the street overnight, Kat was more than happy to move her car and let me park my scooter on their drive, it's this sort of thing that brings people back. time after time. If you are looking for a unique place to stay within walking distance of the beach and easy access to Margate, then look no further - we'll definitely return.
