A traditional Coaching Inn with a difference! The Wensleydale Heifer offers a top quality restaurant, and accommodation equally impressive with the emphasis on comfort and customer satisfaction. We like to let our guests do the talking "the best place to eat in Yorkshire, where service and food quality is second to none... the room was delightful and 1st class.." The Heifer has nine themed rooms, all beautifully appointed with full facilities.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went for our anniversary lunch. Fantastic experience. Helpful & friendly from the moment we arrived. Dog friendly which was an added bonus. The food was absolutely delicious; we both had (different) steaks. The honeycomb x3 dessert was to die for and pretty as a picture. Just perfect. Thank you to all the staff.

Our whole stay from the moment we arrived to the time we left was absolutely perfect. Fabulous room, and very generous birthday balloon, card and gift, lovely drinks by the fire and amazing food. A very relaxing experience. We shall return soon.

We stayed here for 2 nights on the autumn offer for dinner bed and breakfast in the champagne room and chocolate heaven room! Absolutely everything was perfect! Every single member of staff is a credit to the Heifer and made our stay very memorable! We had 2 evening meals and 2 breakfasts and to say the food was exceptional is no exaggeration! The rooms were lovely and clean and very comfortable! Can’t wait to return to try staying in some of the other rooms! Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful warm welcome. Great, friendly, helpful staff across the board & really amazing food. Complimentary sherry and homemade treats in the room were a lovely bonus. Sitting by the log burner with a glass of fizz is a great way to unwind.

Another fabulous stay at our favourite hotel in the dales. Stayed in black sheep room which was warm and welcoming. Our friends had the chocolate room. Dinner was superb. Can recommend the rare beef with truffle and parmesan salad. Looking forward to booking our return trip in 2024.

Words cannot explain how relaxing our latest two night stay was. From beginning to end, the warm welcome, comfortable accommodation, the little treats in the room, the happy and helpful staff, the ‘amazing’ food and cocktails, the glow and warmth of the fire after our wet and windy walk, the breakfast sausages and treats for the dogs. Why does time fly when you are enjoying yourself? All the reasons we keep on coming back!

A truly fantastic experience, from the very moment we arrived until our departure next morning. It was really special to feel privileged with the individual attention we received, especially, but not exclusivley, from Craig, Vince and Adrienn. All this, combined with exceptional food and quality wines made it a visit to remember

We have stayed at the Heifer many times and always have enjoyed our visits - the staff and accommodation have been first class. We were therefore surprised and disappointed with the new 2023 Heifer Hideaway self catering on the opposite side of the road. The bathroom is in desperate need of a makeover and the very dated electric shower just dribbles water, there is no water pressure at all. The shower is over the bath. The heated towel rail is so hot it can burn you if not careful and there is no way to adjust, apart from turning it off in the airing cupboard. It sleeps 4 with a twin and a double. The twin room is difficult to get into because the door bangs against the beds. The double is a standard double bed with a kingsize duvet. There is a strange area where the wardrobe is which we were told is the dressing room, but there are no mirrors and is overlooked so I wouldn't dress there. The double room has barely enough room to walk around to go the the loo at night or just to get back to the lounge. Although it sleeps 4, the sofa is only big enough for 2. It is really low too so we were both sitting on cushions and pillows to make it more comfortable. The light switches aren't in the entrance to the rooms so you have to hunt for each one. It features a mini bar, which is actually the fridge. There are so many drinks that you can buy, there is barely room for any of your own food and drink. We emptied the fridge of the drinks so that there was space for ours. It is dog friendly but you pay £50. This gives you a small dog mat and sometimes treats at breakfast, but not always. I know there is the cost of cleaning but other places of the same price bracket supply bowls, poo bags, biscuits and a dog bed. Apparently there is a umbrella and lights because it is tucked away along a dark footpath but we couldn't find them. The plates were too big to fit in the dishwasher so had to be cleaned by hand. Foil is supplied but not cling film. The glasses are all long stemmed and it is difficult to fit those into the dishwasher without breaking them. In summary, it isn't luxury. As we all new self catering properties, it needs the owners to stay for a couple of nights to see what needs changing. It's the first property I have stayed in where I considered coming home early as it was so uncomfortable. Sorry Heifer, this isn't up to your usual standard.

Thank you for taking the time to submit your review, I did reply to your email this morning so I will just put the response I sent you, the preceding review is from the guests who stayed the following two nights, it is amazing how different people experience the exact same cottage but looking at the very many negative reviews you leave on tripadvisor it is understandable P.S the owners have stayed there and absolutely loved it! Dear Mrs Guest, Thank you for your email, I am very disappointed that your rated us a 1 out of 5 for our new cottage, it has been fully booked since opening in June to very rave reviews but I do know that we cant please everyone. I will address each point that you made, the bathroom was lightly refurbished when we took over and we did feel that this was enough as it is a holiday cottage, I have asked our handyman to look into the shower and towel rail. The cottage sleep 2 adults and 2 children, the sofa is a three seat sofa and there is a small cow shaped stool for a child. The size of the bedroom is something that we can not do too much about and considering you have so much space outside of the bedroom to use this has never been flagged as being an issue. The standard charge for the dog is based upon the 2.5 hours additional cleaning that needs doing due the fact it needs to be ready for guests who could potentially have allergies and we do use some very expensive products to complete this task. We always supply the same extras for dogs but on your recommendation we are adding a dog bowl to the cottage. There was two umbrellas in the entrance cupboard along with lanterns and additionally there is a torch on the keyring of the Hideaway keys. It has always been our policy that we give one stamp per stay and not per night. I do hope that this addresses the issues that you had. Kindest Regards, David Moss

We stayed at The Heifer Hideaway it was superb. All our needs were catered for (including a lovely touch of an Anniversary balloon and card)…it is a real home from home with absolutely amazing views through the picture windows…staff were brilliant in showing us around on arrival and attentive in topping up logs and coffee pods for us during our stay…the perfect place to stay…we will most definitely be back ❤️

We had a fabulous stay with you all. We took along my 4 month old and he was so welcome by all the staff. The attention to detail was first class, celebrating my husbands birthday, the treats left in the room were very welcome. The staff were very attentive and present, not always the case in restaurants and hotels. The food was delicious, the tiramisu and homemade granola were my favourites. We hope to visit again very soon!
