We did a two night stay here in September 2020. The site is quiet, friendly and the location is incredible. There are building works going on nearby but this was only during 'working' hours so didn't impact us. The toilets and showers do their job, the washing up areas were out of action due to Covid-19 safety precautions. The site is perfect if you want a quiet break away, with incredible views and walks right on your doorstep. We took our 2 year old Boxer with us and it was great being able to take her to the adjoining field for a walk and a wee first thing in the morning. Runswick Bay beach is just gorgeous and the route back to the site is lined with some very good pubs!

A lovely, friendly little campsite, taking tents caravan, campers and motorhomes. We were not packed in like sardines, like some others we drove past. Clean, warm showers, clean toilets, water, elsan and electric hookup. Washing machines and a tumble dryer along with washing up area. This is a quiet site almost on the Cleveland Way. Perfect for walks to Staithes, Whitby, port Mulgrave and more. The Runswick Bay Hotel is a short walk away and also takes dogs. Regular bus services outside Runswick Bay Hotel. The ONLY negative I have is that there is no drive over grey water disposal. However, we had buckets. Overall, very happy 😊

We looked at the website & it stated there are 15 pitches with electric hook up, some are hard standing. I rang the site & booked 1 night for 2 people in a campervan. When we got to check in I was very disappointed to find out that our pitch was in a large field down behind the Runswick Bay Hotel and it had no electric hook up at all. This should be clearly stated on the website so that people are aware when booking that near reception there are electric hook up pitches but there is also a large field with no electric at all, ideally for large tents. As this is not stated on the website I automatically presumed that we had booked one of the 15 electric hook up pitches . We will return to the site as we love Runswick Bay but next time when I book over the phone I will ensure that we are on an electric hook up pitch and that we are not placed in the large field.

We looked at the webpage and it looked amazing. So we called up and booked a pitch. We were told that they only had pitches without EHU available, which wasn't a problem and there was no seaview.
Wasn't quite sure what we were expecting due to the mix reviews.
The place is adequate, with toilets and shower block, disable/baby changing room and washroom. Well kept grounds and facilities well maintained.
The webpage gives you a drone shot video of Runswick bay, which I thought was where we were staying. Which wasn't far off.
The site itself, is on a hill site, with no view of the beach. The beach itself, is only a 10 mins awalk away from the site. It's literally across the road and down a steep hill.
A wonderful sandy stretch of beach set in a picturesque location.
We would return again.

i visited this camp site over the bank holiday and how i was disappointed. To keep it short the site was very over crowded with tents caravans and cars all crammed in next to each other to the point of it been a fire hazard and dangerous if some people had of needed to leave early they would of struggled as they were hemmed in. The facilities where pretty new but shabbily done dirty and over stretched. The owners of the camp site seemed stuck on seeing how many units he could cram into one site and how full he could make wallet. i would not recommend this site to anyone

We stayed here for the bank holiday weekend and was disappointed that the site was packed to the rafters- we couldn't move our car at one point. Our main gripe was just how packed it was, the caravan next to us was certainly not 10 foot away, there are long stay, or seasonal pitched caravans and they seem to have loads of space, but the visitors just get put anywhere they can fit you in, the list of rules you get when you arrive might as well not have written on the paper as our other gripe was the dogs wondering all over the site, I saw just 2 on leads, if you are having rules then you should make sure they are adhered to, we thought that the site is over priced - we have stayed at better for cheaper, the location is about all it has going for it.

We have visited this site on a previous occasion back in the summer of 2013 and how fast things have gone down hill is rather shocking. We were looking forward to the trip as we had such an amazing time the first time we visited but sadly this was not the case on this occasion. Within the space of 2 years things have gone from great to bad, mainly due to the fact that the site owners seem to have lost all interest in the campsite and are more focused on getting as much money from their customers as possible, regardless of spacing issues and legal campsite regulations. I appreciate that we stayed on the busiest time of the year - August bank holiday - But that does excuse the fact that they were massively overbooked and kept adding more and more tents, campers and caravans to the site. I have added pictures to my review to illustrate the problems we faced during our 4 day stay.
As I stated above that spacing was an issue so I see that is a good place to start. When we arrived on friday morning, we were taken to our allocated caravan pitch which was number 26, there was already a van in 25 so spacing at the time wasn’t an issue as there was plenty with how the pitches are laid out for the caravan side of the site. That was until saturday morning. We had gone out for breakfast to come back to find that as space was filling up and the site was clearly full they had decided that they would add another pitch for a very large tent in the middle of pitch 25 and 26, this left us with no more than a 2.5 meter gap between our awning door and the tents main opening (we measured the gap) this is not only against regulations set out for fire safety but it also meant that we had no privacy on our pitch anymore, rendering our awning useless unless we wanted to share the space with another family, this normally wouldn't have been a major problem for us, sharing the space as it was a very busy time, however, the family were very rude, loud, drunk, and the children just stopped outside our awning and stared at us whilst trying to eat etc, it made for a very unpleasant stay. I have added a picture of the regulations from the gov.uk website.
Maybe the owners are unaware of these legal requirement or just chose to ignore them in order to make more money in the busy periods, needless to say this was a very unsafe and unpleasant experience which I feel needs to be looked into.
When we spoke to the office to voice our concerns we first spoke to the owners son, who informed us that as his father had placed the tent in that area, he couldn't do anything to help and we would have to wait for his dad to return to rectify the issue. We waited a further two hours until the owner finally came back to the campsite, who then waited until the family in the tent had left the pitch to go for food in order to address our issues. When he did come over he was very agitated and confrontational and taken aback at the very notion that we had dared to have a complaint. After voicing my concerns to him his reply to me was to state that it was August bank holiday weekend and obviously it was going to be busy and why can’t we just be like everyone else on the site and put up with it. After stating that I was still not happy with the situation he asked what we expected him to do about it to which we replied that he should move the tent away from our caravan or compensate us for having to share our pitch, to which he suggested that if we aren't happy we simply leave the site and he would refund our stay. This was at around 8pm in the evening and being a few hours away from home we decided that the best cause of action for the time was to stay on the site and try and make the most out of a horrible situation, As it was August bank holiday weekend, all campsites within the vicinity were fully booked, so we felt we didn't really have much choice in the matter. From reading other reviews on here, this seems to be a common theme from him with regards to anyone who makes a complaint.
This site boasts on its website that it has 32 pitches with electric hookup, in the fields. After staying in many places pitches are designated to one unit per pitch, however this was not the case here and many of the pitches were sharing a hookup due to being overloaded and too many sharing a pitch. (see picture)
The site has just had a new toilet and shower block fitted with 3 toilet cubicles in the men’s block with 2 urinals and 4 showers and 4 cubicles and 4 showers in the ladies with the addition of a disabled toilet to the rear of the block. For a site which has over 300 people staying on it at busy periods, this is an unacceptable amount of facilities to accommodate everyone. On more than one occasion we had to turn around and try again later to use the toilet and especially the showers in the evening, on top of that, the toilets had regularly run out of toilet paper and we had to bring our own along with us. As the facilities are so busy, cleanliness soon becomes a problem and nine times out of ten they were in an unfit state, with mud all over the floors, dirty toilets and shower cubicles which needed a good scrub before being acceptable to be used. (again see pictures) We would have mentioned these problems but felt it would fall on deaf ears and we would have been told to pack up and leave again. The other problem with the “new facilities” is that it has been very poorly designed and unfinished.
The ceiling is still rough plaster
The racks/pallets in the showers are far too long and everything gets wet, including clothes, which in turn leads the water into the main area, flooding the walkways.
One of the showers doesn't have a lockable door and nothing for the door to lock into
No toilet roll dispensers, yet no toilet roll half of the time so not a massive issue.
No shower curtain on one of the showers
Broken hooks to hang your clothes on whilst showering
If you are situated near the toilet block, the door bangs all night long due to it not having a soft close.
All in all Runswick Bay is a lovely part of the country with stunning views over the bay and a family friendly beach, there are some nice walks in the area and a few village pubs which offer great places to eat out for a reasonable price.
They also offers free wifi on the site, however, this is only outside the main office and as and when the owners turn it on for the guests, which means it is intermittent and at their leisure. A nice touch but sadly misses the mark.
We would visit Runswick Bay again but certainly not this site again as it has gone from great to bad in such a short time period.
I appreciate this is a very extensive review but there were many problems which I felt needed mentioning. The only reason I have given this review 2 stars is because of the location of the site and for Runswick Bay itself, otherwise it would have defiantly been a one

Site is nicely located but would have chosen an alternative if we'd appreciated a no ball games/no frisbee rule was in place when booking. Sadly the method of enforcing these rules was rigorous and unfriendly, which was a little disappointing.

Response from Caroline W, Owner at Runswick Bay Caravan and Camping Park
Responded 1 Aug 2016
Hello Mr Nabozny, Must say quite disappointed with your review but not surprised at all. On arrival of your group, all three families were given the park information. We have a set of rules, we do expect campers to be aware of these rules and be responsible, considerate and treat both ourselves, staff and other campers with respect. Your group however were not in the slightest way responsible or considerate. We received numerous complaints about the noise and the football games, you were asked very nicely to calm the game down at 8:45pm and were extremely arrogant and rude to myself, the park owner. Numerous other campers who were in close quarters of yourselves could hear you mocking me laughing and joking about breaking all the rules, maybe a joke but not so in your case as you continued to break the rules..The amount of complaints that we received from other campers towards yourselves i think in my opinion is the highest number of complaints against another camper since we actually started running the site our selves.I do hope you find a more suitable location for yourselves in the future :)

I've been coming here regularly over 10 years. I stay in a tent - and this review is only for that.
the positives - a really great area, nice looking site, owners friendly enough. if just that I'd score a high score. the cost for camping was a tenner per person, not cheap, but that's fine if toilet/shower block is ok. but its not, its awful, despite a recent make over. the problem is , and has been for 20years+, that there isn't enough showers or toilets for a site that busy, that takes that many people. 3 blokes toilets, 2 urinals, 3 sinks (that are loose) & 3 showers. all in one tiny block that gets very very busy & dirty (the new owners clean it more than in previous years - to be fair that's an improvement but because of size its impossible to keep clean) its totally inadequate & makes the tenner cost a total rip off. one member of staff a couple of years ago told me there was no decent showers "because the water has to come uphill". for a tenner that's not good enough.
it is a pity because otherwise its fine, but the shower-toilet block isn't & its been obvious for years. sorry - i'd given a great review otherwise.
