Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We booked a very reasonably priced two night break through Travelzoo so we didn’t expect a 5 star break but we did expect a reasonable standard in terms of room/facilities and food. We couldn’t have felt more let down. Our room (No 2) was dreadful. Incredibly shabby with no room for a chair and nowhere to hang any clothes. The bathroom was less than basic - the cold tap ran as hot as the hot tap unless youleft it to run for ages! The offer had said 3 course meal both nights but only 2 were included. But the food was so awful 2 courses were more than enough. It was like school dinners from 50 years ago. The breakfast was slightly better but still way below expectations. The only positive thing I can say is that the staff were very friendly and tried their best. This hotel needs to come into the 21st Century.

Honestly i don’t even know where to start- Daisy, Shelley and Kyra have completely exceeded our expectations when it comes to service and have not only left us speechless but blown away by not only their welcoming but continued investment into creating quite possibly the best night of our lives. If it wasn’t for these individuals we would not be walking away dreaming of coming back, not only this but they have completely raised the bar when it comes to what to expect with bar service at a wedding but left us absolutely dumbfounded with joy. I simply cannot thank these bar staff enough as this has genuinely become the penultimate day of my year, possibly even my life. If you are looking to book a wedding anywhere else honestly you are simply wasting your time. It honestly does not get better than this- it would be quite frankly impossible. My final rating would be an honest 11/10 and i can see myself coming back just for the positive reinforcement these wonderful ladies provided me and my closest friends with. Look no further- Hackness Grange is the only way forward.

The rooms were like prison cells with beds, but no wardrobes or drawers for your clothes. No blind in the bathroom and the blind in the bedroom was broken and irreparable. No chairs or table in the bedroom to sit and relax either. To top it off you are asked what you would like for dinner when you check in, more like a care home or a hospital. We raised all of this with General Manager of the hotel, who told us to get out of his hotel............so we did. All of this was through TravelZoo so be careful with them. My advice would be to steer clear as it flatters to deceive, even if the price is attractive.

This was a fantastic Travelzoo deal. In this sort of hotel where else would one get two nights accomodation for two people in a very plush room, afternoon tea on one afternoon, a 3 course dinner (admittedly limited menu but excellent quality and quantity), wide choice of breakfast all for £199 for two. Every single member of staff we came into contact with was warm, friendly and totally professional. It would be impossible to fault any of them. Hackness Grange is a beautiful hotel in a wonderful location. Should this offer come up again on Travelzoo we wouldn't hesitate to book again.

Where shall I start? Booked 2 night stay through a 'Travelzoo' offer, paying £199 for 2 nights per couple, with breakfast and evening meal included. We were given a menu sheet for the first evening meal. whereby you could choose 2 courses. If you wanted 3 courses it was another £8.95. We were given a very similar menu sheet for the 2nd night - there was one meal choice different!!?? The dining room was cold and people were going up to their rooms to get coats. It completely lacked any atmosphere. - Laminate floor, no curtains, no table cloths , and no pictures etc on the walls. We finished the first evening having a drink in the bar lounge, socialising with another couple. At 11.00pm we were basically told to go to bed as they were locking up? I could go on but basically everything was cut to the bear minimum, probably due to the price we paid for the break.

How lucky were we, we had the best room in the hotel, the Bridal Suite. It was fantastic. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Lovely gardens, and close to Whitby and Scarborough. The dining room looks tired and tables not very attractive. The good was ok but service was great.

Booking in was a delight, ten minutes banter with Christine and Peter set the tone. Plenty of parking spaces, We had a lovely clean room in the courtyard, great shower! Ample breakfast ,Thanks Jules and Lorraine. Main meals adequate, thanks to Charlotte and Peter and all the staff at Hackness for coping with my strange request!.Would definitely return to this lovely old building. no wonder it is a wedding location, I suspect it is beautiful in the summer.

The food is excellent and v important to me hot food served on hot plates , by professional but very warm and friendly staff. The setting fabulous, the decor, and the carpets high quality. There was a mix up with the booking due to booking.com as there was a wedding taking place. Despite this the hotel staff provided us with a really nice room and lovely breakfast away from the wedding guests. Which we thoroughly enjoyed. All of the staff were very friendly and really went out of their way to make us feel welcome. It was a lovely setting whilst eating breakfast. The beds were very clean and comfortable and we both slept really well.

We took advantage of a Travelzoo deal for two nights with two friends. Lovely building and location, but it went down from there ! It was obvious that we’d got a discounted deal. Afternoon tea was very basic and the menu likewise - just three choices of main course : Chicken Supreme (always over cooked) Cottage Pie ( with undercooked potato top ) and bream. Breakfast was cereal and fried English, no choice. It was such a let down when booking what we expected to be a country house hotel. Our friends room was infested with flies (see many Google reviews) staff just dismissed our complaint, the toilet didn’t flush as the handle was broken, staff just dismissed once again. Staff like Faulty Towers, just not as funny as Basil. One visit was enough !
