#1 of 2 hotels in Upton St Leonards
Travellers' Choice
‘Contemporary country house with the Cotswolds warmest welcome’ Set high on an escarpment overlooking the Severn Vale this 45 bedroom country house hotel lies between the Cathedral City of Gloucester and Regency Cheltenham. Hatton Court provides the right balance between traditional hotel service and all the benefits you would expect from a contemporary hotel. The Tara Restaurant is renowned locally. It is an ideal place from which to explore the Cotswolds. Hatton Court is a reassuring size; not large and impersonal, nor too small. As a former splendid Cotswold home the feeling is of being eminently comfortable as opposed to grand. Nothing is hurried. The reception is very much a lounge, with leather sofas, magazines and an open fireplace for those chillier days. Next door the bar is more a place to relax, take tea, read and talk than to rush. The care taken to prepare the food, combined with a smiling service, is complemented by the thought that has gone into creating the Tara Restaurant. Fully refurbished in late 2009 the natural colours and soft lighting make a relaxing environment for friends and relations to enjoy each other’s company. Private dining facilities are available in the equally well appointed Cotswold Room. The peace of the surrounding countryside and comfortable bedrooms, some with whirlpool baths, make for a good night’s sleep ready for another day exploring the Cotswolds.

£15 for a ploughman’s that came out with three slivers of cheese some out of the packet crackers, celery sticks and wilted watercress. I had to remind the waiter that a lot of the things that were indicated on the menu were missing on the plate. They brought out the missing items, the tomato half frozen. The price of the ploughman’s was deducted from our bill though the excuse was that it was new on the menu and the chefs didn’t know how to make it… despite it being around since the 1950s if not before…..

Stayed for one night on our way further South and had a really great stay, mostly because of the lovely bar and restaurant staff. They were all excellent! We stayed in the main building and our room was on the whole very good. There is definitely work to be done to upgrade the bathroom and the decor needs a freshen up but very clean and comfortable. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the food was very good, as was breakfast. People have left comments about the parking and it was tricky to find a space, if you had to park on the driveway up to the hotel it is not very well kept. Maybe the hotel could clear that area so that if parking does overflow you would be happier leaving your car there. The only disappointment was when we were checking out, the member of staff checking our bill couldn’t have been less interested, which was a real shame after the excellent customer service of the other staff. She didn’t ask us if we had enjoyed our stay or even say goodbye, not great. But didn’t spoil our stay overall.

We have just returned after spending two nights at Hatton Court. One the first evening we tried the dinner menu at the Tara restaurant. It was amazing and definitely worth a visit!! The second evening we tried a Greek restaurant in Gloucester. We stayed in a standard double room which was lovely and had everything you need for a stay. Breakfast you have to preorder the night before. Breakfast was lovely. The only downside we found was you had to prebook a time for breakfast upon check in and ended up with either the early timings or really late timings due to the rest of the options being popular and already being taken. Hats off to the bar staff as in the evenings this was very busy! Big shout out to Lauren for the wonderful cocktail she made us! Definitely think the bar area could do with more staff to make it easier and run more smoothly. The only area that we were slightly disappointed with was Covid rules not being followed by all guests. We found a few times guests were wondering around holding their mask in their hand and not wearing them when not sat at the table or in the corridors of the rooms. Staff didn’t seem to enforce the wearing of masks or remind guests to wear them. We also saw a few times in the bar groups of people jumping between tables because they couldn’t decide where to sit and again staff not saying anything. Would be handy upon check in if guests were reminded of the rules and informed of where masks etc need to be worn. We would definitely recommend people book to stay at Hatton Court Hotel. We will 100% return for another stay!

We have frequently stayed at the Hatton Court Hotel over the last 18 years. We always enjoy the setting and the last 2 day's weather has certainly added to our enjoyment. The outside terrace has stunning views and the wicker cushioned furniture with sun parasols ticked the box for both our evenings for outside drinks and dining. We have been blown away by the quality of the food. We started our break with a 2 course Sunday lunch. By far one of the best Sunday lunches we've enjoyed for a long time. The beef was pink and tender and the homemade Yorkshire pudding was delicious. We both ordered chicken in a cream Leek and mushroom sauce for both evening meals because it was so tasty and tender. You pick breakfast the night before and we both enjoyed a full english with fresh fruit, toast and pastries. We can not fault any of the food. Well done to the chef and team. We booked our stay over the phone months ago and we'd like to give a special mention to Tom. We booked well in advance to give us something to look forward when the country was in lockdown. His telephone manner was excellent and he did everything he could to accommodate our special requests. Having a dog sometimes makes staying in a hotel difficult but Hatton court and especially Tom made sure we had the perfect room, a great place to dine with our dog and nothing was too much trouble. Hatton Court offers great food, a beautiful setting and excellent service. We have booked a 2 night stay for July and September and can't wait to return.

Me and my friend stayed for two nights last week. On arrival we were over the moon firstly with the stupendous view and secondly the hotel generally. We received a warm welcome and were generally pleased with the executive double. The room was a bit tired and the toilet really needed a good bleach but we were so happy with everything else we didn't mind. We had an absolutely fantastic evening meal in the Tara restaurant. The fillet steak was the best we have had for a long time. The service was impeccable. Breakfast was very nice and again good service. On the second day we had the afternoon tea which fabulous.. I couldn't finish mine! I would thoroughly recommend the hotel and thanks to all the staff
