Myself and my family had a wonderful stay in Mirabelle last August. It was so relaxing and it was a place where we could get away from it all and the hustle and bustle of city life. The kids enjoyed exploring by themselves, which they loved as there is so much open space around the gites. They could play while we enjoyed a glass of wine and a book around the pool. Between ourselves and the kids we all enjoyed our time there and will be returning again with no hesitation. It was also situated in a great location as there was a lot to do and see in the local area. Finally I would just like to express my sincere thanks to Mary and Willie who were great hosts. They were extremely accomodating and made us feel at home with ease.

We had a great holiday in Mirabelle. This is our second time coming. We live in a city so everyone loved the open space and had lots of fun playing football and badminton. The zip-wire was one of our favourites. It was a treat to be able to splash around in the pool every day. It was so relaxing and enjoyable. The BBQ was also a great hit with us. As a family we made good use of the bicycles to explore the surrounding countryside. The owners, Mary and Willie, were always kind and helpful. Thanks again for a great holiday! We look forward to coming again soon !

We stayed at Mirabelle in August this year in Vanille. I think the apartment is actually nicer and much larger than the pictures show, we are a family of 4 and didn’t feel claustrophobic or on top of each other at all during our stay - having 2 baths was also a massive plus for us. Both bedrooms are also a great size but I don’t think the mattresses in our gite were great, ours had a thick topper on in the main bedroom but I think they probably need replacing, the ones in the kids room were no more supportive. Mirabelle is great value for money and is really well positioned for exploring the local area and there are tonnes of lovely things to do within an hours drive. The lanes around the gites are great for bike rides and walks/runs. The sunflower fields are beautiful. We loved the area and the closest town has a brilliant food market on a Saturday that is well worth a visit. Supermarkets are all within an easy drive too. Our kids loved the freedom of being able to meet new friends and play in the grounds with them, it’s a really lovely space and our son really gained a lot of confidence at having independence to roam around pretty much as he wished. There could be a little bit more attention on equipment needing to be replaced/repaired- as an example there were flat balls and while this is a small thing, it would be really easy to check each week and replace the ones that aren’t fit to be played with. There was a broken step on the zip wire too - the kids loved it and I’m sure it gets hammered during the season but putting some new steps up so it was a bit safer would be good. The pool table was also really uneven, I understand this is caused by kids not looking after it but people arriving in August shouldn’t be met with a lower standard of equipment than those arriving in May because of wear and tear during the season. There are a couple of points that would have made our lives easier when travelling with a toddler - one is that we thought maybe adding some fencing around the patios courtyard side could be really useful. We couldn’t really have our door open without our toddler wanting to go into the field or pool area (understandably!), this would have given us a bit more flexibility for him to have an outside play in view. Or maybe a gate between the apartments and the field? Obviously supervising our child on the field was not as issue but this would have been a nice way to have time in the lovely, cool, apartment with the doors open. While it did not stop my eldest going in the pool it was very, very cold. Even on the hottest days it was really chilly. It could have been because it had been cooler in the couple of weeks before we were there but my son and one of his friends found a thermometer and the temp was 23 degrees on a very hot day. Not one child lasted more than about 20-30 mins without having to come out for a warm up (before going back in). Our toddler only went into the pool a couple of times over the 2 weeks because it was just too cold. If there was any way of adding a shallow toddler pool to the area this would be a huge sell. That being said, the pool area is lovely and we really enjoyed spending time there. The honesty bar was a big hit! The BBQ was lovely but it would have been great to get some quiet music going, just to add to the atmosphere, if you don’t get a chatty group this would help with any awkwardness! Also doing the BBQ on a Thursday as people are potentially leaving in a day or so is a bit of a shame, maybe doing it on a Monday/Tuesday could be a better ice breaker? Overall we had a great time and would happily recommend Mirabelle as a place to stay, it’s a rustic French complex which is peaceful, gives kids some freedom and if you’re looking for something that is very far removed from a package holiday it’s perfect and it was pretty much exactly what we wanted; we felt it was good value for money. There are a just a few areas where a bit more attention to detail could really take the place to the next level. This is by no means a negative review, we would happily return, this hopefully just offers some constructive feedback to help take a really good place to an amazing place to stay!

Response from William M, Owner at Mirabelle
Responded 21 Sept 2019
Thank you for your review, Bopadeebop. We are glad to hear that you all enjoyed your stay and would happily recommend Mirabelle. We would like to respond to some of the points which you have raised. While we are glad that the gite more than met your expectations, we find that mattresses are a very subjective issue and a matter of personal choice. What will suit one set of guests may not suit another. In relation to the equipment, the steps to the zip wire platform were not broken but there was a board on the platform which had worked loose ( presumably because the kids do give it a good hammering every day) and when it was brought to our attention, it was immediately repaired. All equipment is routinely checked. There are numerous balls on site. We have inflated balls throughout the season and as there are lots of balls on site, they are certainly not all flat all of the time. A battery operated pump is always available in the bar area specifically for the inflation of balls and also for the pool inflatables. We remember one little boy who really enjoyed doing this as it was a fun activity for him. As for the pool table, we saw several children who used it like a trampoline, even though there are two trampolines in the play area. It was immediately brushed clean and re-leveled. However, as we do not live on site we are not there to supervise how the equipment is used on an hour to hour basis. Therefore things can change. We do not agree that guests who arrive in August are met with a lower standard of equipment than those who arrive earlier in the season. For example, the condition of tennis/badminton rackets, ball bats, tennis balls, shuttlecocks, frizz-bees, playhouse, the castle etc. are all in the same condition for everyone. There is a gradual discolouration of outdoor plastics due to their exposure to strong sunshine. We feel that erecting fencing around every patio in the courtyard would inhibit free flow movement for everyone especially children, as they wander to and fro all the time. It would also not enhance the overall ambiance of the courtyard. Unfortunately, a fence/gate between the courtyard and the playgrounds is not practical as the equipment is taken away through this area for winter storage. The two trampolines are much too big to fit through a closed off area. The temperatures were not cooler a couple of weeks before you arrived. Unfortunately, temperatures dropped, especially nighttime temperatures during part of your stay. Thus water temperatures varied between 26 and 23 degrees. We don't think that 23 degrees is cold but perhaps it's a little chilly for younger children. Next season it will be possible to have our BBQ nights earlier in the week as you suggested. It is a good idea. In the past this was not possible due to scheduling constraints. A lot of preparation time is required for these evenings. Our ethos for Mirabelle has always been to provide an environment where adults can unwind, relax and enjoy themselves and where children have the freedom to play in the large open spaces, meet with other children and form new friendships. It is an added bonus if children, like your son, grow in confidence and independence through their experience at Mirabelle.

We booked this on the basis of glowing reviews and a great looking website. There are some excellent things about Mirabelle. It is made up of only a handful of cottages, so even when it is full, we didn't feel crowded. It feels set up with children in mind, with plenty of space and activities. The owners, Willie and Mary, do not live onsite but we saw one or both of them every day. They are friendly and seemed keen to be helpful. However, there were a few (fairly small) things that were off, and added up to a feeling that it's a bit neglected. Some examples - The website says the pool is heated, but it wasn't and the water was bracing. The kids were also disappointed that, contrary to the description, there were no night swims, they couldn't find the woodland to explore (there is a small wooded area but it was full of brambles), no treehouse and no tents to camp out in at night. We were in Lavande. The cottage itself was ok; the big bonus is the large kitchen/living room. There is an open plan sleeping area (the double bed is on the mezzanine, but one room in terms of light/noise) which isn't mentioned on the website. It was fairly clean and reasonably well equipped. Overall we felt that the pictures on the website are a much more polished version of how we found it. It is missing elements that by themselves aren't much (and which we didn't feel were individually worth mentioning to Willie & Mary) but it added up to being slightly disappointing.

Thank you baloooon for your review but we feel that we need to address the points which you have raised. The pool is covered pre-season with a fully retractable transparent pool cover which augments the water's temperature using the sun's radiation to approx. 26/27 degrees C. As the holiday season commences the temperature of the water may vary depending on prevailing weather conditions but we never felt that the temperatures fell substantially low to be termed “bracing” throughout the day. We have found from experience that guests prefer to have access to the pool at all times rather than having the pool cover closed from 7 p.m. until 10 a.m. the following morning. You mention that there was no night swim. This was simply not the case. The evening/ night swims take place every Thursday after the BBQ. The children dine first. While the adults dine, a bouncing castle is erected for the children's entertainment (not mentioned on the website). Afterwards, the children can go for their evening/night swim. However, sometimes the swim begins while the parents are still dining. The duration of the swim varies and whether it continues in daylight, dusk or darkness will also vary too. The wishes of the parents determine the evening. We prefer the evening to free-flow for the enjoyment of all. At all times it is the parent's decision to allow their children to partake or not. The swim is not dependent on participating in the BBQ. All are freely welcome. Our woodland provides a backdrop to one side of the Mirabelle grounds. It is a small woodland purposefully left natural and self generating as it is home to a family of wild native deer and other wildlife. It is not manicured but one can still explore it. To further this experience one can explore all the wonderful countryside on foot or avail of our freely provided bicycles as many guests do. In relation to your point about the camp-night out, it is not offered on our website as an activity like the BBQ night or the horse/pony riding but is only mentioned in a review on the guestbook page. We were advised by our insurance providers to discontinue camp-out nights and use of the the old treehouse in the woodland due to complicated insurance issues. However, in an attempt to maximise entertainment value at Mirabelle each year, we provide new items not yet mentioned on the website, e.g. children's archery, croquet, table football and and a bmx bicycle. Lavande is not mentioned as a two bedroomed gite on the website. There is a large open sleeping area on the ground floor with a double bed on the mezzanine level but the amount of light/noise within the gite is surely dependent on the occupants and their lifestyle. We feel the gites are presented cleanly and well equipped, i.e. access to a washing machine, oven, microwave, electric kettle and toaster, coffee pot, ironing board and iron, clothes horse and all essentiel kitchen utensils etc. We find that guests book Lavande because of its large open living area and its direct access to the pool and playgrounds to the rear. Perhaps Lavande was not the most suitable gite for you and your family's needs. We are surprised by your comments about the website. It is our experience from guest feedback that pictures on the website are an accurate portrayal of what they find on arrival. Obviously, bed linen and other insignificant items will change but the facilities provided and the quality of the accommodation never varies from the photos shown on the website. As one or both of us are at Mirabelle every morning maintaining the pool, opening the kid's club or organising the off site pony riding, we are available to guests. It is unfortunate and disappointing that you did not mention any issues you may have had to us in order that we could have addressed them as we endeavour to ensure that all our guests have the best possible holiday experience at Mirabelle.

We have just returned from a three week June stay at Mirabelle Gites. We stayed in the main house (Mirabelle) and wow was it worth every minute of it. We have three boys under 8 and they all like to be active. Mirabelle offered so much for our boys and from the moment we arrived they were engrossed in all the games and sports activities laid on...all free and available to use all day long in a 5 acre garden. Football pitch, croquet, badminton, volleyball, zip wire, sand pit, climbing frame with tree house, play castle, all sorts of toys and every sports bat, ball and racket that you need. The swimming pool was fantastic and our host Willie was there every day to clean it. The pool area was very safe, it can be sealed off from very young wanderers with double locked gates and from older kids with a completely retractable (and lockable) pool roof which can also serve as a glass roof for indoor use. There's a shed full of inflatable pool accessories. There is also an honesty bar at the pool which is great when you don't fancy driving in to town for cold beers, wines, juices and ice creams. You can relax, read a book, have a snooze in the comfort that the kids are safe. In the courtyard area, there was a fussball table, a decent pool table, basketball hoop, boules set and up to 10 well serviced bikes and safety helmets for all age riders. The local country laneways are a fantastic option for a long walk, run or cycle in to the rolling fields of wheat, corn, sunflowers and vineyards met with the blue skies. Watch out for a glimpse of the native deer in the evening sunset. The main house is lovely, it's rustic with great space, three large bedrooms, a great family room (full of board games and dvd's) with satellite TV, a patio leading out to the pool and gardens. The kitchen is large, modern, clean and well equipped for dining at home. The old thick country house walls keep the house cool on hot days and nights and there are also a number of fans. This is a very safe, quiet, idyllic country setting tucked away in the beautiful French rolling countryside. Ideal for families or couples who want to escape their fast paced life at home, get some sleep and relaxation and has plenty of activities if they so chose. There are two local villages either way within 3 minutes drive and a bigger town 10 minutes drive away which has two excellent supermarkets and a farmers market twice a week. There are plenty of restaurants close by but don't get caught on Sundays as many are closed. There is WiFi too if you can't manage to switch off. Overall Mirabelle Gites is a fantastic spot, worth every penny and the hosts Mary & Willie are lovely people, are always around to keep the place ship shape and give some good advice on places to go, but never in your way. We're definitely going back next year!

We booked Mirabelle on recommendation of family who have visited a couple of time already and were not disappointed with the facilities or location at all. Willy who runs the place met us when we arrived was very welcoming and provided suggestions of places that were still open for families after the French school holidays ended, and even though we were the only people left on site he turned up every day to open the pool, and left us the keys to the kids club which they would normally charge for in high season (thank you so much got us through a couple of unseasonable rainy days!). The location is handy for Saintes, Royan (beach) and Cognac and was about 5 hours back to Caen for the ferry. We had a lovely time.

Took our family including Grandchildren for two weeks in July/August. Stayed in the main house which was great for two families. Such a great place for the kids with a lovely swimming pool, loads of things to play with, zip wire and so on. Our grandchildren loved the freedom and made lots of friends during our stay. We were all made very welcome by Willy and Mary. Lovely part of rural France but with easy access to the coast-Ile de Re; a Rochelle, Ile D'Oleron etc. and lovely towns like Saintes and Cognac. All in all perfect for a family holiday

We would like to thank Willy & Mary for another excellent stay at their wonderful Mirabelle Gites. This is the second year in a row that we have stayed here, each time for 2 weeks and it is excellent. The Gites are clean, tidy and very well kept and the facilities around them are even better. If you are looking for an idyllic retreat for a few weeks with a young family we couldn't recommend it enough. Our three children (10, 7 and 4) disappeared in to the field to wreak havoc on the Zip Wire / Trampolines / Badminton etc and we barely saw them for the full fortnight except when they were hungry!! They made friends with the numerous other children who were staying at the site and were never without a smile. In addition to the great facilities the location is perfect too. You are situated in a beautiful quiet part of the countryside surrounded by Sunflower Fields ideal for cycling but great towns like Cognac and la Rochelle are only a short drive away. We will certainly be booking again for Summer 2018.

We've just confirmed our booking for next year in Mirabelle as we all enjoyed it so much in July. The kids loved the freedom in the large gardens and the pool being right outside their door. They made lots of friends and loved the kids club and the horse riding trip. They were a little disappointed about the forest area being closed and the campfire night being cancelled but they organised their own anyways. Willie said he will try and tidy up the area for next year. The barbecue night was great fun and the kids loved the night swim. Willie, Mary and Sadhbh were great hosts and always available to help with any queries. There was so much we wanted to do in the area but it was hard to leave the gite as we were all so relaxed. There's a massive supermarket nearby and a lovely town. You can take a bike (free on site) and cycle down past gorgeous sunflower fields to the local bakery. Onsite there are trampolines, sandpits, swings, footballs, pool table, basketball hoops, bikes, swim toys... We got to meet some lovely people and shared many a happy bottle of wine while the kids ran around or watched movies in their friends gites. We stayed in Lavande which was ideal for us as it opened out to the pool area so we could keep an eye on the kids. The wifi only really worked in the courtyard but this didn't bother us. All in all a very relaxing holiday. We stayed in La Garangeoire with Eurocamp for 5 nights on the way home but we all agreed we preferred Mirabelle. Roll on August 2017.
