Porth Veor Manor Hotel is just over a mile from Newquay, within easy walking distance of all the amenities it has to offer, but far enough away to act as a haven from the hustle! Prettily perched above Porth Beach, you can look forward to breathtaking views across to Trevose lighthouse. But if you fancy a stroll, our terrific terraced gardens flourish in the mild Cornish climate and a private path leads you to join the coastal route, with easy access to Porth beach below. The hotel building itself is a charming 19th Century manor, packed with original features such as our winding staircase and open fires. And as we're big on good taste, you'll find award winning locally sourced food in the relaxing interior of our restaurant too!

We booked this Hotel through, Best Western (as I am a member), the booking clearly confirmed that their is no restaurant currently available for evening meals at this facility, also Booking.com, and the Porth Veor web all mention this, so it seems unfair that people on trip advisor complain about this when it is clearly stated.
Secondly there is no lift in this 19th Century building, and although the stairs to rooms 20 to 29 are considered steep, the hotel offer any help or support needed to access rooms with luggage etc. We in our mid 60's had no problems with these, but if you are a little frail or mobile restricted suggest you ensure that you are not booking these rooms.

The Hotel is situated in a wonderful position on Porth hillside close to the beach, and has a heated outdoor swimming pool, we used daily, this is surrounded by a number of holiday cottages for those whom wish self catering. The garden also has good views of the beach with a secret lane access down to the beach, and has a couple of self catering cottages.
Whether you are in the hotel or the cottages the hotel are happy for you to organise 'take aways' to enjoy in the various locations.

The reception young ladies, whom seem to deal with more than just reception, were superb in assisting with ideas for eating locally, with a vegetarian wife to cater for, many of these were tried and enjoyed, and majority only a short mile walk from the hotel, they were always happy for a quick chat, and and one issue we encountered the problem was resolved very quickly, these 2 young ladies were a credit to the organisation.
All other members of staff we came across were very efficient and helpful at all times.

The rooms were clean and tidy, we had a sea beach view, which was nice to have, the bed was comfortable, and plenty of storage space, hairdryer, toiletries (we did not use) provided. Refreshments and biscuit replaced daily, as for my ability with the coffee pod machine!!, helps if you put water into the reservoir !
TV also available if required
Bathroom clean and tidy, step into bath shower in room 24, creful when stepping out as it is a large step down, shower was mixer style but with sufficient pressure for good shower. No problems at any stage with hot water etc.

If you use the swimming pool reception provides you with towels to use, the pool is a reasonable size, and has a small jacuzzi seat are, with 'on' button near the shower. Sufficient outside space on 3 levels for sunbathing or sitting at the numerous table and chairs, and the staff are always happy to sort you a drink or two.

We found this hotel to be exceptional value for money, and in superb location, once you understand the issue with the evening meals then you will also appreciate the value you are receiving is significantly better than the majority of hotels we have stayed in on Pentire point, and the service level at Porth Veor being significantly higher , more Customer focussed than others and a very good base price.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 nights, luckily we had some really nice September weather, and were treated as genuine people, not just a product passing through.

Thanks team

Another enjoyable stay at Porth Veor Manor, again on a special two night deal with a three course dinner and breakfast. We upgraded to a Superior double room at the time of booking and really felt it was a good option. Our room was a generous size with two "zipped" single beds making a King Plus sized bed. A double wardrobe and large flat screen tv with Freeview and Sky channels was also very good. Shower room was well appointed though there did seem to be a problem with slow water drainage from both the sink and shower which we reported to reception. Also we had noise early morning from the room above which woke us up, basically just continual footsteps etc but it was from 7.00am on both mornings which suggested it might be a member of staff, again we reorted this to reception. We didn't think the restaurant was quite up to the previous high standards we've enjoyed hence our review at four star rather than five. The portion sizes seemed on the small side, I had a rump steak one night and it eas very thin, not the 8 oz identified on the menu. Breakfast was also not quite to par, with our poached eggs the yolks were hard and when I ordered chefs special of kipper I was expecting a whole fresh kipper not the filleted portion that arrived. One foodie positive though was the "Groupon Voucher" Cream Tea which exceeded our expectations, never seen so much clotted cream!!
It's fair to say the hotel had just re-opened after a winter refurbishment so maybe that accounted for some of the problems in the restaurant. We will return as it is one of our favouritees for a winter birthday treat, hopefully we will be able to revert to five stars.

We stayed for 11 nights with our grown up kids and cannot fault the hotel. The breakfast was brilliant (and I am fussy over breakfast) the waiter remembered not to put the beans next to the egg from day 1, and plates were always hot! It’s a shame that the restaurant wasn’t open in the evening as I imagine it would be pretty good! We did have a couple of take aways delivered to the hotel and the bar staff always provided cutlery and plates which was very nice (but we could only eat outside so that may have been an issue if it rained - we didn’t want to eat in rooms as we had 3 separate rooms). Our room was on the top floor and was huge with plenty of wardrobe space and a stunning view of the beach, yes it was warm but I’d read the reviews and we took a fan. The bed is probably the best, most comfy bed I’ve ever had in a hotel room, wish I had room for one that size at home! Towels were fluffy and changed whenever we requested it. Only thing was there was a lot of stairs to the room so I’d probs just request 1st floor next time. Parking was never a problem but may be if hotel was full (we just blocked each other in). My husband cycled down from Essex and the hotel kindly kept his bike secure inside for our entire trip! Walk to beach was fine and there’s a lovely tea room down there too (Gwenna I think it was called). We visited a few local restaurants; the tapas along the road was delicious and we really liked the food at Senor Dicks in Newquay too (our top 2). We also visited 12 Beach Road, Indian Kitchen and Little Italy, all worth a trip and would rank in that order! We did visit the Mermaid on the beach but only for drinks, felt a bit like being in a ‘spoons! You must make restaurant bookings in advance, the hospitality industry is struggling with recruitment! Swimming pool lovely and warm and we chose to sit on the grass at the back of the hotel, rather than around the pool, as you have the seaview. Great central location to access lots of Cornwall! Will deffo be visiting again, staff couldn’t be more helpful and made us feel very much “at home”! Worth way more than its current star rating!

We stayed in the 3 bed villa while the hotel itself was still closed due to Covid. It has high quality furnishings and is generously sized, though dated in terms of decor. The hotel has a much nicer look and feel than you’d expect for its star rating and the outdoor heated pool is a nice bonus. Everything was very clean and the grounds well kept. The location is lovely, very near the beach and out of town. The reason I wouldn’t stay again though is that the accommodation’s room arrangement makes no sense (the largest and most well appointed room with balcony has only twin beds and no shower while the larger of the doubles with a terrace is downstairs but has no en-suite and instead is close to the downstairs cloakroom with shower). We ended up feeling annoyed that the two teenagers were enjoying lots of space upstairs while we ended up with no en suite. Perhaps we should have taken the smaller double with no balcony but I really wish they’d put a double in the master bedroom and bunks in the smaller double. I can see that they wanted a twin and the other rooms aren’t large enough but still. Also why no shower and just a bath in the master bedroom en suite? The other reason I wouldn’t stay again is that you do feel you’re in a gold fish bowl. At its closest the villa is less than 2m from the pool fencing and there is a huge patio door and two other windows so everyone round the pool is looking straight at you. The pool is small and the arrangement attracts young families for obvious reasons so the pool is full of noisy small children all day and because there is no poolside areas other than the villas’ patios, everyone leaves their stuff on your patio table. The pool is for the sea view and car park facing villas too. If the hotel was open with lots more people trying to use the pool, it would be worse I would imagine. We did manage to use it once but the arrival of a large party in several villas with lots of kids monopolising the pool meant we stayed out for most of the holiday. The villa is also poorly equipped with only one small ‘sharp’ knife that wasn’t sharp and tiny cups, plates and glasses. No tongs but they had things like a lemon squeezer and a butter dish? I would recommend picking your accommodation carefully at this hotel if you like your privacy.

This is a hard review to write because the hotel, whilst dated and quirky was a lovely place to stay. The staff were polite and catered for everything we required however, we had the worst smell in our room which we reported on the first night and were told due to them being fully booked, there were no other rooms available. On the second day we spoke to them about it and were offered the option to change rooms for the remaining night or get a complimentary breakfast. We were going out for the day and didn’t intend to return until late so took the breakfast option. The smell did ruin our stay, it was obviously coming from the toilet area and after being told it was a known problem, we felt that it should have been disclosed to us either at booking or shortly after. The room rate should also have been reflective of the rooms problem but we paid full price, because of the issues we had, we would not chose to return to this hotel.

We found out by chance a few days before our stay that the restaurant was closed for dinner. This meant that we could not find an alternative hotel or book any reservations in local restaurants. We ended up having to scramble around each day trying to find somewhere reasonable to eat. We ended up having to travel several miles on four nights, using McDonald’s on 2 nights and Tesco express sandwiches on one night. I recognise that the pandemic has caused many problems but we paid £167 per night for an average B&B. Best Western and the hotel should have been totally transparent on the product they were offering. They were the exact opposite of this. I went to Cornwall to relive childhood memories. The experience was spoiled because of the dishonesty of the supplier.

Responded 28 Jun 2021
Thank you for your feedback and we are concerned by your your comments but we can only reiterate the comments that we made in the other review site that you have used. We are very sorry that it has been necessary for us to keep the restaurant closed in the evenings until further notice. This was a very difficult decision we had to make and it was only made shortly before re-opening the hotel at the end of May. The reason is directly related to Covid and compounded by a severe shortage of staff in the hospitality industry and particularly in the South West. We have been trying for a long period of time to employ chefs to cover evening service both via direct advertising and through employment agencies, but without success. It’s interesting to note that there are two highly reputable hotels in the area which have had to make the decision to only service Continental breakfast in guest bedrooms as they simply do not have the staff. Fortunately we have a full kitchen team for mornings so our breakfast service has been unaffected. We note that you booked on a bed and breakfast basis and did not pre-book any evening meas. We are genuinely sorry that the lack of restaurant was such a disappointment to you and ended up causing inconvenience as you did not secure dinner restaurants in advance, which is what we recommend to all guests in the pre-arrival email. Until your communication we had not heard of guests being unable to get booked into restaurants but we now believe this may be as a result of local restaurants reducing the number of covers due to the pandemic. When you contacted us and became aware of the restaurant being closed in the evenings we offered to send you a link to our web-page recommending restaurants but you declined. We had understood you wanted to make your own arrangements. We are living through difficult times with the pandemic and we have kept our website up to date and edite amenities we offer so they are current. Similarly we have updated Best Western at all times. It would appear that our closing of the restaurant in the evening only became an issue when you had difficulty getting into local restaurants at short notice. From our earlier communications it does appear you were not suited to Porth Veor Manor and we are genuinely sorry but it is totally unfair to claim we are dishonest as this is blatently untrue and defamatory.

We stayed here for a few days at the end of October.
All staff very friendly and welcoming particularly the reception staff.
Our room was spotless and plenty of tea/coffee/milk available which was very thoughtful.
Breakfasts were lovely, freshly cooked full Cornish breakfast and a choice of cereals, fruit, pastries and toast.
Would definitely visit again.

We were very lucky to be given a room with a sea view and balcony on the first floor when we stayed as part of a coach trip. Comfy bed and room was very clean with all the facilities you could ask for, including iron and ironing board if needed. We were also very lucky that the restaurant was open in the evening for us during our stay - food was fantastic and choices to cater for all tastes. Staff very polite and friendly, especially Raphael. Lovely setting with beach close by and scenic walks. Definitely recommend

Where do I start, Absolutely brilliant hotel, the staff are super efficient and very friendly the room was spotless with a stunning view, shower very good, plenty of tea coffee biscuits, the bed linen was very good quality and the bed was lovely .The pool was probably the nicest part after a long days work and driving,to be able to get in the warm ,quiet, pool,I was the only one in there, was the best stress buster you could get!! Anybody in Cornwall on business who normally stays in a premier inn, book this instead, it wins hands down and is worth the 15 mins off the A30, the breakfast was of the highest quality served in the nicest surroundings you could wish for with lovely sea views. 11 out of 10, a magical hotel that I'm lucky to have found, and will definitely be returning with the family

Is it a fairly flat walk to town and are there buses from town centre to your hotel
St Agnes, United Kingdom1 contribution
The hotel is situated on a hill close to Porth beach. If walking into town you'd need to turn right at the hotel entrance and walk up the B3276, this road is on an incline. At the top you'd join Henver Road and it's a flat walk from there. A bus service operates and stops close to the entrance of the hotel. Walking from the entrance to the hotel entrance however is up a hill.

Parking is limited but there is enough for one vehicle per room and depending on the time of year, we will normally have space for some additional vehicles. If you want to give us a call on 01637 873274, we'd be happy to answer any of your questions. Thanks

Both of our superior bedrooms are on the second floor, which won't be suitable if you have a problem with stairs as the hotel has no lift. If you can manage one flight of stairs to the first floor, then subject to availability we may be able to book one of our rooms that have a zip and link double, which is the equivalent of a kingsize bed. If you state your requirements at the time of booking we can try and book you one of our larger rooms - again, subject to availability. Please make it clear at the time of booking of your requirements and the reasons so that we can make notes on the booking. Please advise if you have any other queries we can help you with. Kind regards Tracy

Our self catering villas and apartments in the grounds of the hotel are sadly unable to accept dogs/pets. We do also manage 5 self catering apartments that are located at the 'Beach House' which is 150 yards from the hotel and 2 of these apartments can accept dogs. We would always advise contacting our reservations team on 01637 873274 to double check availability as these pet friendly apartments are very popular as there are so few available! I hope this helps. Kindest Regards Jamie General Manager
