The villas have been designed to fuse the unique style and influence of the Middle East and North Africa with the colour and vitality of tropical Sri Lanka. The beautiful antique features of the villas highlight the rich heritage of the island. With two private villas and a shared villa consisting of five individual suites on the estate, Udekki provides complete privacy along with first class accommodation and hospitality. Each of the two private villas incorporates air conditioned bedrooms, spacious living areas, satellite TV, a central courtyard, and large open front veranda with views to the pool and sea. The five suites in the shared villa are spacious and airy, with ceiling fans and air conditioning, and views through the gardens. The new additions to Udekki, Loft D situated above Villa 343, and Loft M situated above of Villa 346, have stunning views of the ocean. We stayed at Udekki for a couple of nights during the Independence weekend Its a beautiful, tranquil boutique hotel in Alankuda beach. If you like a relaxed, peaceful holiday by the beach without the hustle and bustle of a large resort, this is an ideal location. We were well looked after by Dean and Chaturanga. As the hotel is small, you can expect a personalised service. The beach villa was spacious and clean. The ocean was lovely and calm during the morning. Food was delicious. Highly recommend the Sri Lankan rice and curry and the magnificant breakfasts - a mix of Sri Lankan and western - that are served either at the tree house by the beach or in one of the pool side cabanas. Dean organised a whale/ dolhin watching tour for us.We saw many pods of dolphins and several turtles, sadly no whales during that trip. We loved our stay here.We will definitely be back.

We loved Udekki. It is a perfect boutique hotel set on a magic stretch of beach and with oudles of character.
We started in the rooftop loft suite and were then upgraded to a Villa: I am not sure which we preferred, they were both wonderful.
The hotel is managed by Dean, who really cares that we enjoy ourselves. Honestly nothing appears to be too much trouble for him, and he does provide excellent, excellent food. Make sure you have dinner or lunch in the tree house overlooking the beach.
We were on full board but Dean was delighted to cook anything for us, including crab curry and an outstanding tuna tartar. Total generosity for a full board ticket.
We adore the setup in the hotel, particularly the individual dining areas and also the feeling of space around the pool and the beach, with masses of varied places to relax, in sun or shade.
Drinks are good value for money.
The Dolphin watching is not to be missed, and also do the lagoon trip.
Thanks Dean, it was a lovely stay.

Udekki was our first stop in Sri Lanka after 25 hours of travel from the U.S., and we couldn’t have been happier to call it home for four nights. Dean and his staff took care of us wonderfully, anticipating our every need. We were lucky that there were few people at the resort during our stay and we got the whole beach entirely to ourselves! The food in particular was exceptional - the best we had on the island, especially the breakfasts, but also make sure to try their curries (though make sure to tell them in advance - they take a little while to make). As a guest at Udekki we were able to visit two sister resorts down the beach, though I liked ours the best. They also arranged dolphin-watching and Willpatu tours for us. The combination of calm, pampering, and excellent food was the perfect introduction to this beautiful island.

We ended our two weeks touring Sri Lanka with a three day stay at Udekki and it was without doubt the highlight of the holiday. We were so well looked after by Dean and his team that we felt nothing was too much trouble. The food, suggested and prepared by Dean and chef, was superb and we were very spoilt as there was only us and one other guest at the hotel during our stay.
The trip to see the dolphins was enormous fun, just sad not to see any whales but a good excuse to return.
Thank you to Dean and team for such a perfect finale to our wonderful holiday.

Beautiful rustic luxury accommodation on a stunning beach. Exceptional food and service a credit to Dean and the whole team. Its great so see staff genuinely engaged and happy. One of the best places I have stayed in Sri Lanka. Plenty of activities dolphin/ whale watching, watersports, yoga, massage and bocce or you can just chill in any of the pool or beach pavilions.

The Udekki Resort in Alankuda, Kalpitiya is a wonderful place to stay on the north-east coast of Sri Lanka. With a large pool area, a great selection of food and even and opportunity of receiving real ayurvedic massages this is must visit gem. The staff is very friendly and helpful! It is believed that spending USD 200 per night in a resort in Sri Lanka would at least guarantee our safety.
Sadly it was not the case when my female friend and I (British and German nationals) booked 2 nights to stay at the Udekki resort. The assault took place within hours of our arrival. It is worth mentioning that we were dressed in conservative clothing throughout our short stay.

Although the apartment given to us was fairly tasteful, the one of the windows was faulty and could not be closed properly. We were told that it was a safe area.

It all happened when we were asleep at approx 1 am when the attacker entered our bedroom. He must have been there a while watching us sleep as a couple of times on my legs, I felt my sheet move. When the sheet was moved for the last time near my torso, it woke me up and when I looked by my side (as there was a mosquito net) I saw a body shape. As I shouted to alert my friend, the attacker jumped on me and forcefully placed his hands on my mouth. Both my friend and I fought him and shouted at the top of our voices which made him run away.

The attacker came specifically to harm as he did not steal our iPhones, jewellery and money which was visible on the table.

It is necessary to mention that the attacker was probably someone who works at the resort as none of the 4 dogs barked) and they did when we or new guests arrived…) Although we suspected the attacker to be the resort’s security guard due to his behaviour and build, we could not be sure as it was pitch black)

-When we were moved to a supposedly more secure room, (as it was the middle of the night and we could not leave the resort) we had to ask to be moved another 2 times as the windows in each of the rooms were faulty. There were 2 other guests at the resort who offered us to stay with them as they could see how traumatised we were. They also feared their safety and left the resort on the next day earlier than planned.

Although the manageress at Udekki did not charge us for the night, she dealt with the matter in a very uncaring manner as when we were filing a report to the police, we were asked to “Wrap it up,” due to the arrival of new guests.

We got in touch with the owner of the resort whom we wrote to claim compensation as we both need counselling for trauma. The owner, Diane [------] did not once apologise and said that the matter was,”Out of their hands,” and that she would not compensate us. It is clear that the resort is only interested in making money and do not have clients' interest at heart.

We have a case in the Sri Lankan court which is being delayed using various delaying tactics and we are aware that this case will not be concluded.

The Udekki resort is in a very remote area where local exposure to foreigners is fairly new. Whilst the resort is on the sea front it is an open area which is not gated.

Needless to say that this scenario is by far the most traumatic experience we have ever experienced in our lives where we both thought that we would get raped and killed far away from our family. And given the incompetencies of the police and legal system, our bodies would have never been found and the case closed.

If you are thinking of booking at the Udekki resort, please be aware that no liability will be accepted by the resort and no compensation will be given if anything goes wrong. Also beware of who is watching you. In Sri Lanka, it is also not uncommon that women get raped whilst their male partner are fast asleep next to them.

Also please check the UK government’s travel advice on sexual assault in Sri Lanka which is now very common.https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/sri-lanka/safety-and-security

Response from Udekki A, Owner at Udekki
Responded 23 May 2017
We at Udekki are both surprised and saddened to see the post regarding these allegations, some of which are inaccurate and defamatory, not only of the resort and its staff, but also of Sri Lanka. Investigations are currently being conducted by the appropriate Sri Lankan authorities on the basis of the original complaint of the two guests. Contrary to the impression given that nothing has been done, in fact an arrest was made on the basis of the evidence of the guests and the case is before the courts.   We provided comprehensive support at the time, which was acknowledged and appreciated, not only at the time, but also in emails for weeks afterwards. We have also continued to assist with regular updates on the legal process in Sri Lanka.

Udekki

We stayed at Udekki for three nights with friends whom have recently relocated to Colombo. I have to say that I am totally bewildered regarding the high ratings that Udekki receives on trip advisor. At best Udekki would be 2 star place. Let's get into the pros and cons:
Pros:
-Glen and Caroline are very warm and friendly people and our welcome was great.
- the pool area and poolside cabanas are great place to relax and very comfortable
- the meals were ok: over the top amount of food. Way way too much but this I later discovered is about Sri Lankan hospitality and does not go to waste
- we were thankful that Glen gave us the opportunity to go out and sight the Dolphins. The morning boat had gone and returned and we were offered by Glen to take us out. This was truly an amazing experience and we have been all around the world and never seen as many Dolphins. The Dolphins seemed very happy and were doing all sorts of twists and turns out of the water. Many even did somersaults.
Cons:
- I really disliked eating my meals and constantly trying to keep thousands of flies off my meals and anything on the table. This really made me think about the food safety standards of the place. We tried with a portable fan but to no avail. Perhaps installation of ceiling fans in the cabanas would reduce the fly problem.
- The rooms are awful. They are run down and really do not feel clean. The doors do not lock and I just felt unsafe. There is a old safe in the room that is operated by a key.
-The mosquito net around the bed we thought was good until we found several Mosquitos inside the netting. Glen did organise for the room attendant to additionally spray our room.
- On the last day we found several large cockroaches in our room and bathroom. The rooms and bathrooms are just run down.
- I disliked the fact that when we were deep in discussions with our friends that Glen (after he had a few alcoholic drinks) appeared with his guitar and started singing. He did not pick up on the cues that we just wanted to chat with our friend. I also disliked that Glen smoked around us as we had a child with us: this was poor form.
- the hotel is located very close to a power station and this is very unsightly. The beach is really not much and there is a lot of rubbish on the beach.
I would not revisit Udekki.

Response from Glen T, Owner at Udekki
Responded 25 Dec 2014
Hi guys, Thanks for your review on TripAdvisor. Can't do much about the mosquitos and the cockroaches when it rains and we're living in the bush! Like I've said before in other reviews, Udekki is my home, and it is what it is. It's like some people going to a Blues gig and wanting the band to play classical or heavy metal music! Even though I started to build Udekki only a few years, all doors and windows are over a hundred years old - that's adds to the charm and the character of Udekki! Next time you come to the Kalpitiya region of Sri Lanka, there are many accommodation options in this area that is just beginning to develop for tourism - we hope you find something that suits your needs. The people who accept Udekki for what it is, embrace it and have a great time here! But we understand that Udekki is not for everyone. As far as star ratings go - when travel agents ask what rating Udekki has, I just tell them that Udekki is my home and I don't rate it by stars. My apologies for smoking around you guys - and I didn't pick up that you didn't want to hear a bit of blues. Cheers, Glen

We stayed here for the first 4 days of our trip.
It was about a 3 hour drive from the airport.
Glen (owner) and his staff made us feel very welcomed straight away. We were the only guests for the first 3 days, so having about 10 staff looking after your every whim took a bit of getting used to, but was fine once we got into the swing of it!
We were on an 'all inclusive' package, so plenty of food, most of which was very good, was available - far too much actually, but Glen made it clear that none went to waste. ....i.e. the staff ate what we didnt touch :-).
The actual loft room we stayed in was pretty sparse but roomy, perfectly adequate for our needs....most of our stay involved being around the extremely pleasant swimming pool area or sitting in one the many surrounding equally pleasant and relaxing 'hut' areas.
The location is fantastic, right on the beach with the water about 50 metres away - safe and pleasant to swim in too.
Glen is also a really nice guy, nothing appeared to be too much trouble for him, and was great fun to be around :-).
We enjoyed a memorable boat trip to watch the dolphins - we were extremely lucky I think because as well as seeing hundreds of dolphins we also saw about 5 whales very close up and a sea turtle! Glen accompanied us and as usual we all had loads of fun, including fishing for food to eat in the evening!!
Glen was also extremely helpful regarding our onward travel plans - thanks Glen :-)
The only reason I have rated it 4 rather than 5 stars is the cost - it was actually quite expensive compared to other accommodations we stayed in during our 16 day trip.

Hi there and thanks for your question. Can I suggest you email with possible dates and your requirements? This way we give you more specific information as it will also depend on the time of the year and other bookings. We are a beachside destination in an area of Sri Lanka that is beginning to develop in terms of tourism. Most people come for activities such as kite surfing or dolphin watching or relaxing in the sea or by the pool. We are about 2 1/2 hours from the airport, and about 3 - 3 1/2 hours from Colombo - so it may depend on where your group is based if this is a suitable day trip. We look forward to hearing from you!
Answer from Udekki
Colombo, Sri Lanka2 contributions
Hi there, It is possible to get to Udekki by bus (probably with 1 change) and there is a very limited train service (with a tuktuk or bus for the last 40 minutes) or you can organise a car and driver at the airport or we can arrange a pick up for you - it takes about 2 1/2 hours by car. Send us an email and we can give you more information about all options. Cheers!
