The Bateman Arms was built c.1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor Of London) as a building where his Estate workers would collect on pay day. Over the years it became a staging post for weary Drovers to refresh themselves as they walked livestock from West Wales to markets in Birmingham and London. Today, Abbi Court and her team provide a warm welcome to both locals and the many business and leisure visitors who travel to the Marches throughout the year. With the rural splendour of Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Mid Wales on the doorstep, there's plenty to discover! With award winning and dedicated local chef Thomas Tudor creating unique and orginal dishes from our kitchens.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

No bulb in the light fitting, only one cup in a double room, hot water came out of the cold tap. No breakfast available. And the room was cold and only heated up by about midnight . At £85 a night it was a rip-off.

Do not have the chicken burger or chicken wings with garlic and cheese dip. The burger was vial, not really a burger pate, in the true sense of a pate. Just a piece of chicken, that was tasteless. I had to put ketchup to get any flavour! The chicken wings were very sparce of chicken meat. And the taste was terrible. Maybe Friday is Chef's day off?

Nothing was too much trouble for the wonderful staff. We had a two-year-old with us who was looked after very well. They were happy to make sandwiches for us to take away and tweak meals to suit our dietary requirements! The food and bar were lovely. The rooms were also very clean and comfortable. Would highly recommend.

Stopped at a touring park up the road and heard good reports on the food so decided to try it. We weren’t disappointed as the food was very good. My whitebait was lovely and not over-battered. The belly pork was tender and vegetables nicely cooked. My partner’s mushroom starter was pronounced lovely and he enjoyed his main course of chicken parm. Would highly recommend.

The stone-built converted outbuilding were attractive outside and in. We had a large room with a most comfortable double bed. Although breakfast was not available, there were tea and coffee making facilities in the room and toiletries in the ensuite. Friendly staff and overall a pleasant value-for-money experience.

Found the place with no issues and loads of parking space available. No signage to say where reception was until you found it around the back. needs better signs showing where it is from the car park. Barman checked me in and pointed the way to the room. I was staying 4 nights. Room was great once I shoulder barged the badly fitted door to get in. So far OK ish. However, the next day I returned to my room around 9pm to find it as I left it in the morning. the barman didn't know what to say when I confronted him so he went to see the Manager. The Manager didn't bother coming to see me but told the barman that I should have requested the room serviced otherwise it would not be the entire stay. Now I don't mind this rule but it should have been pointed out when I arrived by receptionist / barman !!! And I would have said to service the room every day. So as they could do nothing for me I had no tea/sugar/milk, shower gel, clean towels, made bed or empty bin. This is where you lose all your plus points. So after requesting the room be serviced every day - I still didn't have any shower gel replaced or an empty bin and the bed was just pulled over and not made on every other day. The one plus was as the cleaner on the second day couldnt lock the door as it couldnt be closed shut they left it unlocked so anyone could have gone into the room and helped themselves. On the last night I found the door had been fixed and did now close properly. These people may know how to run a pub but they know nothing about customer service in a hotel I will not be back

Delicious burger and dirty fries! Prompt service and really friendly. It's a lovely stroll up the footpath across the road to the church and Arches. Must include more characters to meet the minimum.

Fabulous Sunday lunch. Maybe the best we've had! The staff were great too. All keen to help and add to the very pleasant experience. Lovely touch when the chef came to ask us if it was all good. We will be going there again without doubt. Thank you guys.

Ate here two days running as we were in the area. On the Saturday we ate from their main menu and all of us (a party of 5) enjoyed the three courses we had immensely. Good quality food and good sized portions, alongside a warm welcome and courteous service. We returned the next day on the off chance as we didn’t have a reservation and were fortunate that there were still some Sunday lunches available. This time there were 7 of us and once again everyone enjoyed the food greatly (some had beef, some pork). The desserts are also fantastic! All in all this was a real find and we hope that the pub continues to thrive going forward as it’s a gem with hardworking staff and great food so deserves to succeed.
