The Bateman Arms was built c.1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor Of London) as a building where his Estate workers would collect on pay day. Over the years it became a staging post for weary Drovers to refresh themselves as they walked livestock from West Wales to markets in Birmingham and London. Today, Abbi Court and her team provide a warm welcome to both locals and the many business and leisure visitors who travel to the Marches throughout the year. With the rural splendour of Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Mid Wales on the doorstep, there's plenty to discover! With award winning and dedicated local chef Thomas Tudor creating unique and orginal dishes from our kitchens.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed for 2 nights and had dinner both evenings. The room was clean and bed very comfortable with a nice ensuite shower room. The 2 meals we had from new chef Tom were great and very tasty and well priced. Breakfast was also very nicely cooked and overall we had a very good stay at this country pub. Handy for visiting Ludlow, Leominster, Offas Dyke, Elan Valley. Staff were also very attentive and friendly. I would highly recommend a stay at this pub.

The stone-built converted outbuilding were attractive outside and in. We had a large room with a most comfortable double bed. Although breakfast was not available, there were tea and coffee making facilities in the room and toiletries in the ensuite. Friendly staff and overall a pleasant value-for-money experience.

Went last night for our Xmas dinner and the food was excellent. I had Prawn and Crayfish cocktail as a starter, absolutely delicious and lots of it. Had a Cheeseburger with Pulled Pork for mains, so good and very filling, had to leave some to make room for dessert. Biscotti cheesecake with ice cream was out of this world. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinner and the service was exceptional, will definitely be visiting again. Wishing this family business a very successful future, they certainly deserve it and thank you for a wonderful night.

Found the place with no issues and loads of parking space available. No signage to say where reception was until you found it around the back. needs better signs showing where it is from the car park.
Barman checked me in and pointed the way to the room. I was staying 4 nights.
Room was great once I shoulder barged the badly fitted door to get in.
So far OK ish.
However, the next day I returned to my room around 9pm to find it as I left it in the morning. the barman didn't know what to say when I confronted him so he went to see the Manager. The Manager didn't bother coming to see me but told the barman that I should have requested the room serviced otherwise it would not be the entire stay.
Now I don't mind this rule but it should have been pointed out when I arrived by receptionist / barman !!! And I would have said to service the room every day.
So as they could do nothing for me I had no tea/sugar/milk, shower gel, clean towels, made bed or empty bin. This is where you lose all your plus points.
So after requesting the room be serviced every day - I still didn't have any shower gel replaced or an empty bin and the bed was just pulled over and not made on every other day.
The one plus was as the cleaner on the second day couldnt lock the door as it couldnt be closed shut they left it unlocked so anyone could have gone into the room and helped themselves. On the last night I found the door had been fixed and did now close properly.
These people may know how to run a pub but they know nothing about customer service in a hotel
I will not be back

No bulb in the light fitting, only one cup in a double room, hot water came out of the cold tap. No breakfast available. And the room was cold and only heated up by about midnight . At £85 a night it was a rip-off.

Ate here two days running as we were in the area. On the Saturday we ate from their main menu and all of us (a party of 5) enjoyed the three courses we had immensely. Good quality food and good sized portions, alongside a warm welcome and courteous service.
We returned the next day on the off chance as we didn’t have a reservation and were fortunate that there were still some Sunday lunches available. This time there were 7 of us and once again everyone enjoyed the food greatly (some had beef, some pork). The desserts are also fantastic!
All in all this was a real find and we hope that the pub continues to thrive going forward as it’s a gem with hardworking staff and great food so deserves to succeed.

Stopped at a touring park up the road and heard good reports on the food so decided to try it. We weren’t disappointed as the food was very good. My whitebait was lovely and not over-battered. The belly pork was tender and vegetables nicely cooked. My partner’s mushroom starter was pronounced lovely and he enjoyed his main course of chicken parm. Would highly recommend.

Nothing was too much trouble for the wonderful staff. We had a two-year-old with us who was looked after very well. They were happy to make sandwiches for us to take away and tweak meals to suit our dietary requirements! The food and bar were lovely. The rooms were also very clean and comfortable. Would highly recommend.

Friendly welcome from lovely courteous staff.
Excellent lunch menu, including some organic and vegan ingredients from a very talented chef utilising well sourced and local items - (it's so evident) So refreshing to get away from that sameness and the phoney "home cooking" that prevails in so many establishments at this level. All at a reasonable price for the standard of food.
Thank you!

Food was absolutely delicious, chilli beef strips and Cajun chicken starters were amazing, then burgers for main, desert was on the specials board, banoffee waffle, top quality, wish I had taken some photos. We are just nearing the end of our two week holiday and wish we had been before. We drive passed all the time but from the outside it always looks closed, until I looked it up online and realised it is actually open and serving food from 12 until evening which is unusual but good for us, as after a day out we are sometimes looking for somewhere to eat a bit earlier, especially if we have missed lunch and most places are closed. We will be back when we are next in the area.
