We are her now at the hotel. 5th September. The sun beds around the pools still have sand from the rain 2 days ago the floors of the pool area are still dusty as well. The bar area on the roof terreza del mar is a nice area but the lady who works behind the bar has no one to help her and it's very busy there should be at least another person to serve as well. The rooms are nice & big and clean, the Terrace outside is also dirty with the sand on the floor. There is definitely not enough staff for the size of the hotel !!! The food is good and drinks are great. The few staff in the dining are really pleasant and helpful.
The Lady receptionist was very friendly when we got here today. We are all inclusive

Great family holiday. Rooms are spacious, food plentiful and varied, upstairs bar great for an evening. Our youngest loved holiday club and the three pools! Staff were great too. We’ve rebooked for this summer!

An excellent short break and would highly recommend this hotel. The staff and facilities were first class. We relaxed from the moment we arrived. We will come back for a longer stay in the future. Loved the Olympic length pool.

Nice hotel with very poor location. In the middle of nowhere. Pool closed. Could not swim at the beach. Poor English. Smelled like a swamp in the whole area. Beautiful hotel that should have been at an actual beach and closer to a city, restaurants, etc.

So we are long time Neilson holiday goers - Lemnos, Lesvos, Messini, Alana and now Mar Menor.

This was badged as the premium end for Neilson with the cost to match and it just didn’t live up to the expectations.

Let me do the positives first
- fabulous rooms. Spotless and very comfy
- resort was cleaned top to toe every day and very well run by the team
- the Neilson team (as always) lovely. The nannies, the sports teams - everyone fab
- the food —- lovely selections every day
- the bike team. Amazing. Mixture of roadsters, mountains and hybrids. Brilliant team, super knowledgable even for the most geeky triathlete/ biker. Routes are punchy - not a huge amount to see as quite industrial but you can rack up the mileage per week easily
- the swim team. Brilliant coaching in a lovely pool
- spa is small but will be expanding next year but excellent feedback on treatments from the family
- we didn’t do the boats or tennis but understand also excellent
- oh and the weather was brilliant —- be careful if you go out on the bikes in the afternoon and make sure you have enough fluids as it caught a number of us out. It’s so hot on the hills —- a real furnace

The areas for improvement
- the flies are a real pain and always landing on you at all times. The mosquitos come out at night and first thing and will bite through clothes as well. The team do a lot to try to remove them but when you have a conservation area that is swampy within 100 yards of the resort then impossible. This makes evening entertainment difficult to enjoy
- fitness - very poor compared to other Neilson’s where the fitness team are the heart and sole of the resort. Knowing everyone’s names, brilliant classes in and out of the pool. Here very poorly run, little empathy with the guests, finishing early. Very poor
- Wi-Fi is sporadic and drops constantly
- the beach. It isn’t one you would want to sit on as the smell is very strong from the conservation area that is swampy. Very much oversold in the brochure
- the gym. It isn’t a gym! It’s tiny and whilst a running machine, bike and rower were added in our 2nd week, it’s incredibly small and not worth advertising

Overall, give it another 2-3 years and I think the place will have worked out the flies and mosquitos and the grounds will have grown making it far less clinical than it currently is. It feels that whilst other resorts have character, this one is trying a little too hard (of course it has only just opened).

Having been to Alana in Croatia I would swap to go there anytime as Mar Menor also has very little choice outside of resort unless you jump in a taxi - if you do go to ‘LA’ and have a meal at Tropical (amazing tapas). Taxi fares are about €25 there and €15-20 back and takes about 15 mins.

For the money this wasn’t worth it - we wouldn’t go back. It’s been somewhat oversold by the brochure but the flies and mosquitos do make a huge difference and you can go somewhere else for less and enjoy the same facilities (even with Neilson).

We have been to about 7/8 different Neilson resorts as a family (Andriake in Greece, Lemnos, Lesbos etc), and this club was no different with regards to the amazing service and skills of the Neilson team. However, the club itself looked like a prison. Moreover the beach was unusable. It was muddy sand, and the water is filled with weeds and mud. Unsuitable for family beach activities, and total false advertising on the website!!!

HEADS-UP: this is a great active holiday. Everything is really good expect that the beach, the shore and the which are terrible. One shall regard more this as a family-friendly sports holiday with (great) swimming pools as opposed to a traditional beach club as the name of the hotel wrongly states. Neilson webpage and pictures are definitely misleading in that regards and give you a false picture vs., what it is really (if you want to read more on this jump on the section “beach, shore and sea below”. Basically, this is a good place but you need to be aware of what is good (activities, kids club, overall hotel functionality) and what is disgusting (shore and sea) and you can definitely have a great holiday (as we did) if you know what to expect.
So, this is probably my longest TripAdvisor review but for a reason.

THE POSITIVE
> the people who work here are amazing and they do everything with a smile. They really make sure you are having a great time! That is a big plus!
> everything is very functional here
> the sports are amazing: that goes from the facilities, the kit, the staff, the lagoon (which is impossible for swimming but very functional for water activities). A particular mention to the entire bike team; to @Josh and @Oscar, the kitesurf instructors (they need more than 2 though); and to the restaurant staff team (@Alejandro in particular)
> the kids’ care is outstanding, superb! There is a lot of it, kids are happy, parents are happy. Thumps up! Also, kids do lots of activities too! A particular mention to the starfish and sea badgers kids club staff inc. @Tess, @Sophie and @Saskia;
> the pools are great: for kids, for normal people and for hardcore swimmers or triathletes (forget open water swimming though, only pool swimming here!). They must be as the shore and the sea water is disgusting
> the food is pretty good. coffee is really good. orange juice is made or real oranges.
> the place is large and it never looks too busy
THE NEGATIVE
> Guess? The beach, the shore and the sea! This is really bad and really misleading in the way it was advertised. The water is stagnant and feels like a disgusting pond! There is no way around this: I sailed in it and walked tens of meters into the lagoon for the kitesurf lessons and nothing changes. It is not the first 10 meters. You absolutely DO NOT and CANNOT and WILL NOT swim in it. Neilson contact centre staff may tell you something different (as they did to me before leaving) but forget it, no way you can or want to swim in there. And definitely nobody does swim in it. The reason of this ugly spot on the lagoon – as I was told - is the nearby port (just north of the resort) which was built 15 yrs ago: it stopped the currents. So, the sea in front of the resort is kind of dead now! End of the story, it will never get better. If you cycle 10-15 minutes alongside the lagoon towards the south (to Los Nietos), you will see crystalline lagoon water with people and kids swimming (I am not posting pictures of that as technically it is not Neilson, it is another place, but I saw it). So, the lagoon is not a dump because it is a lagoon: it is just a dump in front of Neilson because of the absence of the natural currents and water flows. Also there are plenty of beaches inside the lagoon, even at La Manga (the long strip of land that sits on top of the lagoon on one side and the sea on the other – you will see that from the resort as the ugly tall rise building cannot be missed, not even from a distance!). It is also difficult to stay on the beach in the nice beach chairs provided because it gets hot and you can’t dip into the water. Those were almost always all empty in fact.
So, for us a good beach is a massive point, many will be content with pools, but not us! What really annoyed me is the misleading Neilson advertising and the misleading feedback of Neilson contact centre staff who supposedly “have been there” in the opening week!!! The webpage should change and the ‘beach’ in the beach club name must go!
Neilson must have got a cheap deal on the land as no ‘normally-sane’ developer or tour operator would even think of building a beach resort here. But if you build a family sports and training club with pools, it can work very well.
> another negative is no doctor nor any medical assistance at the hotel, nor will they call anyone in. The pharmacy does not give anything to kids under 2. So, you have to go to the hospital in Cartagena, which is a great one, very quick and very efficient at the paediatric A&E!
> the Wi-Fi is poor because it continuously disconnects.
HOW TO FIX THE NEGATIVE
> simple: rent a car! We rented one for very little at the last minute for a 2-week period in august! We just used a car rental metasearch and picked one company that is a 5 mins minibus ride from the airport. We got a brand-new VW Polo that was perfect. There is also plenty of care rental companies at the airport, 20 meters away from the terminal exit. There are many places you can go to in 20-30 minutes by car from Neilson. We have not found there the best beaches in Europe, but there are decent sea beaches, not like Neilson stagnant pond!

OTHER
> the hotel facilities and new and fit for purpose. However, the building is relatively ugly considering it is brand new. It feels like a mix of a futuristic spaceship and or a futuristic prison. It is all made of concrete and there is very very limited green, and almost no grass. There are already some cracks in the concrete after few weeks of operations! Also, it does not feel any eco-friendly at all and the air conditioning in the public areas is insanely freezing!
> the area for the sports facilities and sheds next to the beach are new and perfect but the area doesn’t look very nice. A lot of soil has been moved; a lot of gravel has been put. It still feels almost like an unfinished building site: so, Neilson here needs to find a way to fix and put some grass and trees there.
> water is only available at meal-time, otherwise you need to buy plastic bottles. The filtration system wasn’t working yet, but hopefully will be fixed
> this is not an international place. Only people from the UK – I guess that is just the way Neilson is

So, would we come back? We typically don’t as I like to explore new places. But definitely it is a place to come back as long as you will know what to expect. I think we may try other Neilson places too. My 3 stars is an average of 1 for the beach and 5 for the rest

We had a wonderful week in Mar Menor 11-18th October 2019. This was our second Nielsen’s holiday, the previous one being in Lesbos over 3 years ago, and I enjoyed it even more, perhaps partly because I knew the system better and knew what sports I wanted to focus on, perhaps because it was off-season so not quite so hot, perhaps because my kids were older and settled into kids club easily and made friends there.

The holidays are very well planned, and it is so great to be able to do as many activities as you like and relax with other adults at dinner whilst the kids are being thoroughly entertained by a great team of nannies and activities instructors. Check out the activities timetable online, which does vary from week to week but gives an idea to start planning in advance what you want to do.

I had excellent tuition in easy tennis (from all the coaches), advanced sailing (from Adam) and yoga (from Jasmine) with time for free sailing and other water sports, tennis practice, and “stretch and relax” at the end of the day, a dip in the pool most days and even some aquafit. My 14-year old daughter learned to sail a few mornings with her lovely, knowledgeable instructors, Izzy and Scott, and was in kids club the rest of the time with her great nanny, George.

We were so busy in the resort that I didn’t have time to get on a bike to see the local countryside on two wheels, but we could have done this easily in lieu of some sailing. Another family member said he had done this and that he saw the devastation brought by the September storm, where farmers have had to scrape back ruined, flooded, fields and crops and replant. This is a reminder of the importance of tourism to an area affected by natural disaster and another reason to go and support the local industry.

The effects of the storm on the beach have been commented on in other reviews, but this did not mar the sailing, kayaking or supping for me. I think the team have done a fantastic job of getting the resort operable within a short time. The week we were there wind was variable, stronger in the afternoons, but never very strong, with just one day where the wind was too light to enjoy being in a dinghy.

My mother and I went on the organized bus trip to the ancient port city of Cartagena just a short drive away and enjoyed walking up to the amphitheatre and the old fort above it and eating tapas on the pedestrian main drag, Calle Mayor. She also enjoyed relaxing by the pool in the resort as she didn’t want to do as many activities as the rest of the gang. The pools really are beautiful, and there are three: one for little kids, one Olympic and one in-between with some shallow platforms. They are all rectangular which makes doing lengths easier than rounder pools.

The fitness platform and bar have lovely views of the Mar Menor, a Laguna protected from the swell of the Med. Yes, there were mosquitos, so pack repellent/antihistamine and/or long-sleeved clothes, but they didn’t bother me much and were only out at night.

The resort is newly built, clean and very comfortable. Double rooms are spacious with a large shaded balcony. Lots of toiletries were supplied including conditioner and moisturising after-sun. A couple of quibbles - the showers were a bit liable to flood the bathroom, especially if you accidentally blocked the drain, the fridges got very wet inside and the AC came on and needed switching off whenever I put the room card in the slot, even though it wasn’t needed at this time of year, which didn’t seem very ecological. However, mostly, it was perfect and clearly very well run.

Water was supplied in coolers in the restaurant and at the beach-bar. Food was very good, lots of salad and seafood, water on tables, and service was very good. A special shout-out and thank-you to Laura and Juan Manuel in the restaurant. Great to have largely Spanish staff in the restaurant, and their English was excellent.

I used to be a bit snobbish about all-inclusives, but this place was excellent and as only the sports and food, not the alcohol, are free, it makes for a calmer, healthier atmosphere. The activities make it easy to meet others and the social atmosphere was fun. We would definitely do another Nielsen’s trip. Perhaps not every year, but I did love it and think I am becoming part of the cult!

I did not see any sewage in the sea. However, according to the staff I was chatting to - when its windy, the silt, etc gets stirred up and causes the sea to become dark brown, but when it is still and the silt then sinks to the bottom, then it does get smelly. Yes, the flies and mosquitos are everywhere, despite Neilson spraying throughout the hotel complex.
