We had an incredible experience at the fruit and spice hotel for our honeymoon celebration. We stayed at the jungle villa, and had our own butler (Ramson). The room was beautifully decorated with honeymoon flowers, and we had food and drinks ready on our arrival. Our butler was amazing and made our stay a comfortable and magical experience.

The hotel is amazing, with its own private beach and a large selection of swimming pools. The hotel provided entertainment from Thursday-Sunday evenings, including a magical dinner at the beach with live music.

The hotel has the benefits of being on a white sand beach, and also amongst the animals in the jungle (we saw lots of monkeys during our stay!) which made the holiday such a unique and special experience for us.

All of the hotel staff are very warm and friendly, they were always ready to help and advise us. The staff made us feel safe and secure when dealing with the all inclusive food menus and my severe nut allergy. I was able to eat almost everything across all menus at the hotel. I would recommend this hotel if you have any food allergies.

We were upgraded on one of the nights for free to stay in the honeymoon villa, and this was decorated with flowers throughout. We also were given a floating breakfast on our private pool, and a romantic dinner for 2 on the beach underneath a beautiful flower arch on our final night.

We would 100% recommend this hotel for your honeymoon, or for a relaxing holiday retreat.

The only thing really is WOW!! An absolutely amazing resort! From opening the front gates, greeted by a Masaai, to check in, welcome cocktail, an spacious room and vuew over the pool and garden.
The entire resort is immaculate, super friendly and helpful staff members ( security Masaais 24 hours, Spa ladies providing attentive and professional service, F&B staff) making everyone feel welcome and cared for.
The half board (dinner buffet ) was awesome - plenty of choice and live cooking!! OMG!
Would have loved to stay longer... is the only thing I can complain about! I didn't book enough nights!
Will for sure come back and recommend the resort to everyone!

The team at Fruit and spice did a great job at making our stay a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. The food was a fine experience, with international and local flavors and the service at a good level. Wine and cocktail selection could be better (please give your bartenders just a basic cocktail training class). Would be great with road infrastructure a bit better - the 1-1.15 commute to Stonetown makes for little interest in outside activities.

Quiet resort in south Zanzibar (location is amazing, friendly staff, food can be improved)

We visited Zanzibar in early February. Days were more closely than sunny.

The beach has 20m of sand, the rest is rocky. You can go for a walk on the beach, to the nearby resort, but you will be permanently approached by the locals.

The distance between the resort and Stone Town is quite long ( almost 2 hours on a road full of holes) . The taxi driver requires at least 80 dollars ,two way.

The food is very repetitive. Few sea food specialities on the menu. Dishes that contain fish are cut into fillets.

What I really liked is the cleanliness of the rooms and the resort.
The staff is also very friendly and open to help you with anything you need.

Any tip left to waiters is a joy because their monthly income is under $100.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with this resort. We were recommended it by friends who came a few years ago and they can’t believe the experience we had. Standards must have dropped over time. While there were some amazing points (the location/views were beautiful and upon arrival our room was upgraded and it was an amazing room). Sadly it was end of season and everyone seemed to be finishing up. A few major points: there were no water sports as they were all under maintenance - when we raised this with the manager he told us the website doesn’t say there are water sports as they haven’t been happening for quite some time. We had to show him where on the website it said there was water sports and his response was something along the lines of “oh well the marketing team should have taken them off as instructed.” We were also promised a buffet dinner every night, on the last two nights they came around and offered us an option 3 mains. Again when we spoke to the manager he said because there wasn’t enough people staying - fine l, but how can we go from a buffet to 3 options for mains? When this was brought to the managers attention he told us but you could have asked the chef for anything... how were we to know this and why were we given a menu with 3 things? On top of that, the food was below average. We finally found that we enjoyed the fries for lunch and when we ordered a second time were told they had ran out. I could go on and on but our final disappointment was the service, we found we always had to find the staff and go to them to ask for a drink or some food and it always felt like we were hassling them. We would to and sit at the pool bar at a table less than a metre away from the bar where the server was and would still have to get up and go to the bar to ask for menus and then again to place our order. Maybe our expectations were too high here but for the amount of money and type of resort we did think we would at least be asked if we would like a drink at some stage. On our final night we went to the beach bar for a drink at 5 and it was all packed away and she said we couldn’t have a drink (we had previously been told it was open until 8). We also raised this with the manager and he called over the girl and asked what time they should close and she said 8, then asked what time they closed and she said 5, when asked why she said there were no guests... we were paying guests who came for a drink during opening times and disregarded because the hotel was closing for the season. Finally when voicing our disappointment to the manager we were met with a lot of buts and excuses and we had to say we aren’t looking for a debate, we are telling you the facts of what our stay has been like. We left with such a negative feeling. Finally he came back and said he could refund the amount of our transfer which was good (I think he actually gave us a bit more) but at the end of the day it doesn’t cover the 3 nights of our holidays we wasted at this resort. In the end the manager actually ended up saying he didn’t think the hotel was up to standards either and he was sorry for the guests that stayed there?!? I really hope our experience was just because of the ending season but I would not recommend it to anyone after our experience. I’m sorry to leave a negative review but I’d hate to think of other people going with high expectations and to be met with an experience like ours. PS some of the staff were lovely and very friendly but most of the servers were unhappy to serve us.

I’ll start by saying that I have never been to a 3 star hotel but this is what I imagine one is like. ( so definitely not a 5 star resort). We came from a 5 star resort in the East and let me tell you, it was amazing ( obviously paid more but just wanted to experience the south as well for three days so thats why we also chose a cheaper option and came across this hotel)

I will start with the Pro’s since they are less than the Con’s

1. The staff is nice and helpful

2. The entertainment is amazing ( you really wont get bored there)

3. The garden is beautiful and you have a lot of places where you can take pics

Now the Con’s

1. It is dirty. At a 5 star resort you’d expect everything to be clean and neat however, here you will only find dirty sun beds and dirty towels, dirty cutlery/dishes and chairs.

2. The food is horrible. Let me tell you this… at such a resort you will expect to have a variety of foods but here nope and most of them taste as horrible as they look. ( found hair in the food + other sand like things that I still dont know what it was… probably actual sand). Five star resorts should have a wide variety of foods cooked carefully.

3. Now this is a personal preference but the mattress is hard and so uncomfortable.

4. The bathroom smelt horrible. I dont know what that smell was but it was the worst smell ever.

5. We had mosquitoes in the room every night even tho they said someone always comes and sprays the room + the net around the bed couldnt even protect us since it had some cuts in it.

6. The beach is so small and only a few sunbeds. Did not feel like a five star beach.

7. No turtles even thought thats what they are advertising in their pictures.

We stayed her for 4 nights at the end of a trip around Zanzibar . On the positives The resort is really well maintained. The pool, gardens and rooms are really lovely. There are lots of different areas to sit/ lay in where you can be alone. The staff were all really helpful and friendly. On the negative side I have to say the food. The only option available was a buffet which was quite repeatative and not very inspiring. When there were options for meat it was really bony and tough. There was an egg station and pancakes, but these were always cold and the desserts basically had no taste. We had eaten so well whilst in other parts including on a catamaran for a week with limited provisions so it can be done. The service was generally quite slow, and I realise it’s African time, but if you sell yourself as a 5 star resort it’s important you deliver. Drinks were reasonably priced and a limited but decent wine list was on offer

An average experience if I am completely honest. It is not what I expected after paying £300 per night. The service could be better considering the high price tag. We had the all-inclusive package, and only a few drinks were included in the package. I ordered a caipirinha (which it was part of the all inclusive package) from the bar next to the pool and I asked if they could add pineapple onto the drink, for that the main bartender wanted to charge me for the whole drink separately!!! Outrageous...

The entertainment was pretty good and the waiters were very friendly too. The food overall is good, although I have been in similar hotels on the island, paying roughly the same and getting better quality food.

The rooms are good in general, and the hotel facilities could be slightly improved. The jacuzzi wasnt working...There are other hotels on the island that are better equipped and charging the same.

Finally, to come to a close, I requested a late check out as my flight was in the afternoon, and they allowed me to check out by 12 noon. I appreciate the gesture. However, as I was waiting, I drank 2 juices, and the main bar tender again chased me before I left as my taxi was waiting for me to tell me I had to pay for the 2 juices as I already checked out. Unbelievable, I had never seen such poor customer service on resorts of this category.

We had a week long stay at this hotel following a week safari In Kenya, we arrived at the hotel late evening and the first 10 minutes unfortunately set the tone for the trip. We were greeted by a lady in reception, who checked us in and ran through the format of the hotel. We were all inclusive and the main points she proceeded to tell us about was all the extra charges that we could incur outside our all inclusive package. The hotel has a lobster bar, which we were led to believe was included in our all inclusive package. We were informed that this was closed, when asked why, she provided no reason. This was a big selling point for us in booking this hotel as we both love sea food. We were then told that if prawns and lobster were on the a la cart lunch menu we would have to pay extra for this. Due to our late arrival the buffet had closed, she then told us that sandwiches would be sent to our room, a gesture which she did not follow through on. I did ask her about this the next day and she replied saying that she thought we would have been asleep. We stayed in the jungle garden room, which was basic but definitely not 5*, the bed was very hard and the room liked tired. We woke up the next day and had to ask for a tour around the hotel, a little thing, but perhaps something you would expect to be offered being a 5* hotel. We spent most of our time on the beach, which was very nice and idyllic. However, many of the sun beds are broken, with the cushions and beach towels stained. Throughout the day I did expect someone to come and offer drinks or at least collect empty glasses, but this never happened. We spent one afternoon by the pool, simply because the beach setting was much nicer and the sea was so clear and warm.

Our main disappointment was the food- there was plenty on offer at the breakfast and at the evening buffet, however the major concern I had was food being left on the side in 30 degree heat, for a couple of hours. The restaurant was open and there was no way of chilling the cold food, so the fruit and salad never looked very appetising. One morning, as authentic as it might be, I did spot a monkey on the buffet worktop, which isn’t the most hygienic of sights. Most days we had a freshly made pancake/omelet for breakfast, then a slice of freshly made pizza in the evening, we didn’t fancy anything else. Lunch was freshly made, but very basic and pretty bland- I wouldn’t say a pizza, burger and chips and a pasta dish is particularly a la cart. The food in general was not of a 5* standard and for us was a major disappointment.
If you are a foody, looking for luxury, exemplary service and a hotel with a fun and welcoming atmosphere this is not the place for you. We would not recommend.

My partner and I had booked a stay at Fruit and Spice last year, but due to unfortunate flight cancellations we were unable to get to Zanzibar. Therefore, we email-corresponded with the management to amend our stay from last year to this year, and we agreed on new dates for our postponed stay. When it (nearly a year later) came to the re-booking of our stay, the management told us that despite our written agreement (per email), they could not let us stay during the new dates (not due to them being fully booked). We are beyond disappointed that we have not to receive a full refund or the postponed stay (as agreed upon), and we therefore recommend that you are very careful when booking with Fruit and Spice, because you will not be able to get a refund OR an amendment of your stay even if they tell you you can… absolute waste of money…
