The Spice House, Mirissa is a beautiful Colonial style guesthouse with its own private swimming pool set in a peaceful, landscaped garden full of tropical flowers, fruits, spices, ponds & hammocks. It is ideally situated only one minute from a beautiful, reef protected bay & 1km from the main bustle of Mirissa beach. The guesthouse is English owned by an experienced traveller and his Sri Lankan Wife which allows us to offer our guests the perfect mix of Western comfort & luxury alongside Sri Lankan charm & service - we like our guests to feel like part of the family. The house is shaded by coconut palms & cinnamon trees to the front while the back is terraced which allows wonderful views over the surrounding jungle. Local wildlife is often seen in our garden with daily visits from monkeys, kingfishers, peacocks, woodpeckers & squirrels. We can also help with Airport transfers & booking whale watching trips during the season (November - April).

The Spice House is just fantastic in every way. We can't recommend it enough, and we can't really express in words how great it is. We actually only wanted to stay 1 or 2 nights and then extended to 3 and then to 6.

The people
The guesthouse is run with so much love by the Sri Lankan-British couple Wathsala and Phil. Wathsala is the heart and soul of the guesthouse. She takes care of all her guests so that everyone feels comfortable at all times. She helps with all questions, supports the guests with everything, e.g. organisation of trips in the region, restaurant tips, laundry service, massages, tuk-tuk and much, much more. Last but not least, it was always very nice to talk to her, she told us interesting things and was also very interested in our home country.
The rest of the staff is also very friendly, warm and helpful, especially Rosh.

The buildings / the rooms / the location
The guesthouse consists of several buildings, all beautifully built into a hillside between a small jungle and the sea. There are two pools. All rooms are very spacious and beautifully furnished. Everything is perfectly clean.
We were at first in the Chili Room in the new, higher located building, the room is huge and simply amazing, it has a large private balcony with a wonderful wide view over the jungle (and you can see the sunrise from there), two showers (one of them outside). It is right next to one of the pools. There is also a kitchen that can be shared with the guests of the other two rooms in the building, with a large fridge, kettle, etc.
Then we were in the Lemongrass Room, one of two rooms in another building, further down in the garden. Also beautiful and huge and with its own terrace. We still recommend the Chili Room because it's just the most beautiful hotel room we've ever seen. :)

The food
OMG, the breakfast!! We always looked forward to breakfast the next day. :) Every day there are different fruits and fresh fruit juice, the best jams (we took various glasses home with us), various egg dishes of your choice and every day a different Sri Lankan specialty.
They also offer an optional Sri Lankan dinner, which is very delicious on the one hand and very nice on the other because you eat together at a large table with other guests.
All meals are served on the beautiful terrace of the main building.

Following a two week cycling trip from the North to the South of the country, our tour guide booked the group here for a wonderful end to the trip. We stayed in the very spacious second floor Lemongrass room where we could watch monkeys enjoying splashing in a pond not far from our balcony. What made this place particularly special were the hosts, Phil and Wathsala. They were there ready to help with suggestions and travel arrangements whenever we needed them. The food also was extremely good, breakfast provided and dinner available upon some notice at a very reasonable rate.

This was our third visit and in our opinion is a "must" if we are in Mirissa. Since our last stay, 4 years ago, the tourist trade in Mirissa has developed considerably but I don't think Phil and Wathsala need worry too much from the competition because what they offer is superb with lots of lovely little unexpected touches that come from their desire to be the best and stay the best.
I booked direct, well I have their email address so didn't need to look at their excellent website. I would suggest that it's the way to go so you can choose which room is the one for you because the choice can be quite different from rooms in the main house to one of the self contained rooms in the grounds. Whichever you choose I'm sure you'll be delighted but if you have mobility problems not all rooms would be suitable so best ask first!
The one thing that mystifies me is why more people don't decide to book their evening meal there. You should try it, and do so on the first night because you will be back for more! I think you need to book before midday or email them in advance as I did for our first evening. Don't be fooled by the room card that states a very moderate price for the two course evening meal. It's not my idea of two courses...it's a banquet of superb local cuisine. You won't go hungry, in fact you won't finish it all either!
Keep up the good work both, you deserve all the success for your attention to detail and value for money.

On our second visit to Sri lanka, we toured last year and finished off in mirissa at a lovely location, so decided to base ourselves there this year, but could not get in at last year's accommodation and booked the spice house instead.
How lucky were we? This place is fabulous, the staff lovely, the owners Phillip and Wathsala so friendly and helpful, we could not fault the place.
The gardens are gorgeous they offer dinners where all who attend sit together the
food is fantastic Sri Lankan cuisine and cheap. Go go go.

We booked for two nights after a busy three weeks of travelling round Sri Lanka. We were made very welcome by Phil and Wathsada and as soon as we arrived felt relaxed. We were in Chilli room in the house which is a five minute walk through the jungle from the main house. Although at first disappointed at the distance from the house we soon realised it was a haven of peace and tranquility. I had mobility problems whilst there so found the walk difficult but Phil arranged a tuk tuk for convenience. The room is spacious, comfortable, large bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower and huge balcony. Shared kitchen area and outdoor lounge and tea/coffee making facilities. The pool is amazing. The design is stylish and well built with natural stone and rustic antique furniture. Fresh flowers were a lovely touch. A/c, ceiling fans, comfortable bed all added to the comfort and relaxed atmosphere. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner at the house - all delicious.
The only down side was that we wanted to stay longer but they were booked up!

If our holiday Sri Lanka 2019-2020 were a crown, Spice House is the absolute most magnificent jewel in it! Having visited 9 different locations we found that the Spice House was the very best experience in all aspects.
We stayed in a fantastic room (Lemon Grass) with ample space, luxury and Zen-like views on the tropical garden, enjoyed it to the max, made walks and loved every step.
A great thank you to owners Phil and Wathsala for their kindness, good words and great comfort!

We stayed 3 nights at the Spice House in the Ginger Room. It was in their newer building with its own beautiful swimming pool facing the tropical tree tops filled with monkeys and peacocks. The room was beautifully decorated, but nothing to precious. Everything felt comfortable and we felt pampered.

We ate at the hotel for 2 nights of the 3. The food was wonderful and we learned how it was all made in a cooking class. It really made you appreciate all the spices and work that went in to the meals.

My partner had a full body massage that was welcome having arrived after 10 days on a bicycle.

The owners, Phil and Wathsala, were the perfect hosts. They arranged everything we could need.

We highly recommend the Spice House and look forward to returning one day.

What a fabulous place to stay! Comfortable, romantic, homely, classy, with amazing views into the jungle. Phil and his amazing wife, Wathsala, were exceptionally welcoming hosts and we had lovely conversations with both of them. They helped us with tuk tuk bookings, tickets for whale watching, gave us lots of local info and tips, and both really looked after my pregnant wife by preparing off-menu, and outside meal time food that she could eat when she was feeling unwell with morning sickness.

The pool is absolutely beautiful, and the outdoor settings are truly class. The location is walking distance from Coconut Tree Hill and Turtle Beach, and a just a very short tuk tuk ride from the main beach, bars, and restaurants. There are cooking classes and other social events available if that interests you.

We were very pleased to have experienced staying here. Both Phil and Wathsala are great and we can’t wait to return as a trio with our baby one day soon. Highly recommend booking and staying here.

We spent 5 nights here, and were very impressed. It's a peaceful and luxurious retreat away from the noise and bustle of Mirissa's main street, with comfortable and spacious rooms set amidst a lovely garden full of birdlife and leaf-eating monkeys. The owners were full of chat and information, and create the perfect mix of privacy and conviviality.
After a week of lovely homestays, this was a noticeable step up in class, with a great pool area. It's a 2 minute walk to the beach, where you can swim with green turtles or just laze the day away with lots of food and drink options nearby. The breakfasts and dinners at Spice House are a western adaptation of Sri Lankan food - delicious and generous, if not as "local" as the homestays we stayed at. Recommended for a great chill-out near the beach.

We very much enjoyed four nights at the Spice House. We were in two different rooms due to our late booking but both were comfortable and spacious and clean. Mostly we were in Pepper Cottage which had two rooms for sleeping and an extra outdoor shower, along with a pleasant porch view overlooking part of the gardens and the trees behind. There was also an upstairs sitting deck but that got a bit hot when the sun was shining. It was the perfect size for our family of three. We enjoyed the pool on several occasions and it was always clean and welcoming (and warm but not uncomfortably so). The pool deck area is lovely - a quiet garden filled with flowers and situated perfectly to watch birds and monkeys in the distance.

We enjoyed breakfast but it didn’t vary much beyond the additional local Sri Lankan extra each day. Staff was universally friendly and efficient and we appreciated the owner’s assistance and good cheer. They made easy arrangements for a day trip to Galle for us and can help with any other local requests too. Overall a quiet retreat from the hectic main Mirissa Road and an easy walk to the closest beach and easily doable walk to the main stretch of Mirissa Beach. Our favorite nearby meal was at 101 just up the street (terrific!) but most of the beach front places along the beach had pretty good seafood meals along with good drinks and welcome shaded beach loungers. Highly recommend the Spice House!

Hi we stayed in February this year. We took our own towels to the beach but there were towels you could use at the pool. Tea and coffee making facilities are on the landing so rooms share but there was never a que and the view you get whilst making is beautiful. We were in the main house. Other rooms may have their own facilities not sure.
